You've probably heard the news that there is a Canine respiratory virus that can easily be spread amongst dogs. To lessen the spread of the illness, vets are recommending limiting your dogs’ interactions with other dogs and communal water bowls. This means limiting or taking a break from attending dog parks, daycare, and groomers. Sadly, that means limiting visits to pet stores like ours. We will be tossing treats or putting them on the ground so we don’t cross contaminate with our hands.
Foods to add to diet to help support your dog's immune and respiratory system:
Fresh or Frozen Pineapple - Contains bromelain which helps loosen mucus and aids in digestion.
Mustard greens- Optimizes oxygen intake
Cabbage- Cruciferous veggies help the liver eliminate pathogens
Egg yolks- Contains Vitamin D which helps the immune system
Avoid oats, cow dairy, rice and cold temp foods (if you feed raw or gently cooked food make sure to add warm water or broth). These foods can cause excess mucus production.
Supplements
These supplements help support the immune and respiratory systems.
Earth Animal - Cough Wheeze and Sneeze (respiratory and immune support)
Four Leaf Rover- Seven Shrooms or Turkey Tail (immune support)
Animal Essentials- Super Immune, Colon Rescue (soothes respiratory system) and/or Cordyceps (optimizes oxygen intake)
If your dog gets sick:
If your dog is getting antibiotics, feed Four Leaf Rover’s Saccharomyces Boulardii to help keep their microbiome healthy. It is the only strain of beneficial yeast that survives antibiotics.
If they are taken off raw food, make sure they are getting lots of moisture with a gently cooked food. Adding bone broth or goat milk will help keep that moisture intake high.
If they have a heavy cough, you can give them honey ( ½ tsp per 10 lbs of dog) a couple of times daily. Make sure it’s high quality organic honey. You can also make your own steam room in the bathroom while you shower so you can help loosen up any mucus. You can add rosemary branches to the shower for some aromatherapy, but if your dog has issues with seizures do not add rosemary to the shower.
