| | HELP FOR AUSTRALIA WILDLIFE RESCUE!
Thanks to all of you that came out to shop on January 25th to support Australian wildlife rescue efforts! We donated 10% of our sales for the day and left the donation jar out another week, and we were able to send $1700 to Wires wildlife rescue - they’ll be distributing it to a variety of wildlife rescue efforts across Australia that are dealing with the terrible situation caused by the fires (and now flooding).
**The Australian Wildlife Help from our side isn’t over either - Primal Pet Food approached us wanting to help! For the whole month of March, 10% of the sales of any Primal product (Raw food, Freeze Dried food, and raw bones) will be donated to Wires Wildlife Rescue!

| | | AMAZING NEW CAT SCRATCHERS!
We’ve brought in a great selection of cardboard play structures with great scratching surfaces! They’re super sturdy, made with recycled materials and non-toxic glues and inks, and the scratching surfaces can be rotated. They even make a scratching post that is made with circles of cardboard that can be rearranged when they start to damage one area with scratching, so the post lasts longer. Buy a Box, Get a Box for Free! Mix and Match!
February is Dental Health Month, and some of the best chews for oral health are also very well-loved by dogs (if their owners are able to get past their looks). Answer’s Chicken feet make great treats for all sized dogs - a perfect project for little dogs, and fairly quick but delicious treat for bigger dogs. Answer's Pig’s Feet are a great project for bigger dogs, but if little dogs want to have a go at them, the good news is they’re fermented; the good bacteria helps to protect the feet from bad bacteria that might make other foods spoil, so they can have it for small periods of time over several days if you put it back in the fridge in between. (Like any new food, it’s not a bad idea to introduce them to big dogs by letting them have half one day and half the next).
The reasons why they're the best dental chews: Feet have lots of textures and connective tissues, so they help to mechanically clean the teeth and gums, and the probiotics from the fermentation process are then deposited right along the gum line to help fight bad bacteria.
Feet are rich in collagen, glucosamine, and chondroitin, so they’re good for joint health as well. The pig’s feet are cut in half (4 halves to a box) and there are 10 chicken feet per box. We’ve recently lowered the price on the boxes, so this buy one get one free is a rockin’ deal. They also have a frequent buyer card! This makes them much less expensive than a lot of other chews, and they’re twice as beneficial!

| | COMING SOON: THE MOST AMAZING LEASHES!
We're so excited to tell you about the new Trailblazing Tails leashes! Some of you might know the owner, Tricia Case, who ran Trailblazing Tails dog walking and training company. She also came to Green Dog for Fear-Free Nail Trim sessions in the past. She has struck out in a new direction, designing and producing the most wonderful leashes we've ever seen. Our staff is loving their early prototypes. First of all, they're made with a material called Biothane - it's a buttery soft and strong pliable rubberized material that feels similar to a well broken in leather leash, but it can withstand abuse! It allows for optimal grip even when wet and is often used in the equine world. We all love the feeling of a soft leather leash, but this vegan material has that same great feel, gets even softer with use, and can get muddy and wet without any damage at all. Tricia uses the same high quality brass fittings you might find on a high end leather leash, and her leash styles have multiple attachment points to make them incredibly versatile. There's also a sliding tab that you can use to change the configuration of the leash. Our favorite leash is the Sunny: It's the perfect leash for a stroll anywhere. These are fabulous resting spots made by our own employee, Calla. They would also be great in a crate. She hand knots them from Pendleton Wool selvedge, a painstaking process that results in a heavy, thick, cushy bed. They'd be great for seniors who might have trouble getting in and out of overstuffed squishy beds with high sides. It rivals an orthopedic mattress in their ability to support and protect old bones from feeling sore on a hard floor These beds are warm in the winter while still being very comfortable in the summer. The lanolin in the wool makes the bed naturally resistant to odors but they are washable and dry-able if you need to wash them. |

We like TetraPaks a lot for packaging, as they're not as heavy as cans and they fit more efficiently into boxes for shipping, which means they take fewer fossil fuels to transport than cans. | | | New Blog Post!
I've been writing some articles on how to set your dog up for success with training tips and explanations for the "why" as well as the "how" of training. I have 30 years of professional positive reinforcement training with both exotic and domestic animals, but I've haven't written many articles on this blog about it. I say these things to people I'm giving advice to in the store, but I decided it was time to put them in writing for others. This is the second article in the series that I call "foundational thinking", as once you understand how dogs think and learn, and the concepts behind why you use certain methods, you can train just about any behavior you like! This newest post is called "To Treat or Not To Treat". I've been stewing on this post for a while, as I think it contains what I believe to be some of the most important information I can give you about why we use positive reinforcement, and the dangers of using dominance theory and aversive methods especially when dealing with situations that are uncomfortable tor dogs.
The first article in the series is called What Do They Want? How Should They Get It? There are tips on how to deal with behaviors that you don't like, like barking to get your attention (with cat tips too!) |
