Happy Spring Flowers!
Don't Miss Newsletter Specials Below

I know I'm just ust barely squeaking in a March newsletter, but I realized I have a few great things to tell you about. Most importantly, we're organizing our 2nd annual 5K fun run with Foot Traffic! It will be part of our Earth Day weekend festivities (as a Green store, Earth Day is our favorite holiday, and we wanted the weekend to be full of fun activities). So, part of that will be the run on Sunday April 22nd: meet at Foot Traffic at 9am - dogs are welcome and you can walk or run. A $10 voluntary donation at the beginning of the run will enter you  in our big raffle to benefit Oregon Shores. This organization is doing great work advocating for the protection of beach, headland and tide pool areas; working to create a network of marine reserves off our coast; focusing on adaptive planning for likely impacts due to climate change; and engaging more than 1,340 volunteers in monitoring the shoreline along the entire coast of Oregon.
All that week we'll be selling raffle tickets for some great prizes, and we'll draw the winners Sunday night. If you or your business would like to donate an item or an experience to the raffle, please let us know! We Oregonians and especially our dogs sure love our fabulous beaches - lets send them some love on Earth Day!
Note on Newsletter Specials: we will honor the discount on anything that we run out of and have to reorder! Discount given at the register at the time of checkout.
Happy Easter!

We still have a few cute Easter items for pets, like these adorable catnip toys for cats that look like chocolate bunnies, handmade in San Francisco with organic catnip; refillable catnip carrot body pillows  that are great for kicking; and Spring bandanas for dogs whose profits benefit local shelters.
Come in this week by April 5th and take 15% off of any of these above items!
Important Spring Safety Reminder for Cats!

Easter, and spring in general, is a likely time that a friend might bring you the gift of a Lily plant, or a bouquet of flowers that is full of Lily blossoms. Trouble is, Lilies are incredibly dangerous for cats, as even getting pollen on them and ingesting it while they groom themselves, nibbling the petals, or drinking the water in the vase can cause irreparable damage to the kidneys and even death. Please be mindful of bringing lilies into the house.
Unique New Tool Helps to Keep Chews Safe!

Made by our friends at Himalayan Dog Chews, this hard nylon plastic ring has teeth that hold any chew tightly so dogs are less likely to be able to gulp the chew whole or swallow that last piece. You can use a screwdriver to tighten that bigger pointy part into the chew to hold it in place. It's specifically designed to hold Himalayan Dog Chews, but it can certainly hold most other treats, from bully sticks to carrots. It's top-shelf dishwasher safe and available in 2 sizes. A customer brought one in to show us and we had to find it and order it right away! We just got them in yesterday.

New Himalayan Loom Toys!

Cuteness alert - another (super cute) new toy from Himalayan Pet Supply: these loom toys empower women! They work directly with women’s skills Development Organization (WSDO), an NGO and certified nonprofit that has been working in Nepal since 1975, to create this line of adorable nontoxic toys. 100% of the profit from these goes directly back to WSDO. The fabric is made from 100% natural fiber and is boiled, washed, and dyed with natural foods and minerals and then washed again.  They’re stuffed with Allo wool, the fiber of the Himalayan Nettle plant. There are a lot of cute shapes - whale, giraffe, elephant, etc. They're for the snuggly cuddlers in your life, or your favorite new human baby - not for power chewers. Did I mention they were super duper cute?

Turn Any Plastic Soda Bottle
Into A Portable Shower!

Spring Rains or trips to the beach can turn dogs into a muddy, sandy mess that's hard to invite back into your car. This genius idea to the rescue! The rubber Mud Dog Travel Shower simply screws onto most plastic bottles to create a quick, convenient shower to clean off a playful puppy or their muddy gear after a romp on the trail.

-Fits Standard PET soda bottles from 16oz to 2 liter (not included)

-Shower time is over a minute long (with 2 liter bottle)
-Made of dishwasher safe, food-grade silicone.
We're impressed with how well it showers!

The Knot-a-Hitch from Ruff Wear

Ruff Wear makes the best outdoor gear for dogs, hands down. Have you ever tie your leash to a tree while you're camping so you can set up camp? This new product is a campsite dog-hitching system using climbing-inspired components and hardware. This comprehensive and intuitive system allows dogs to roam a little at camp while remaining on leash. The Knot-a-Hitch includes a strong, kernmantle rope that can be set up between two trees or secured to a single post using Ruffwear-designed hardware and an easy-to-use tensioning system. Dogs can explore their new surroundings while their human performs camp duties such as setting up the tent, cooking dinner, or building a fire. 36ft.

Please Welcome Michelle!

We've had some staff turnover this year, with some really long-time employees following exciting new opportunities in their lives. Luckily, the new employees we've brought in have been invariably amazing and knowledgeable. Michelle is no exception. She moved right into the neighborhood recently from Virginia, and came in to check out her local pet supply store. She started chatting with one of our managers, Melissa, who came to us and said we have to try and get her to work here! She had worked at a similar sort of holistic pet supply store in VA, and she was already so well acquainted with many of the brands we carry and is well versed in holistic support for pet health and wellbeing. She also has a background as a freelance photographer and experience in food service. She and her big dog Tully are happy to be in Portland, and we're so happy to have her cheerful self as a member of our great new team of Green Dog rock star employees.

A Discussion Of FDA Disparity in Raw vs. Dry Pet Food Safety- Last week we had to announce on Facebook about another voluntary recall of a raw pet food. We thought it might be an opportune time to mention our frustration with the disparity between how the FDA treats raw foods vs. how they treat other pet foods like kibble, so I wrote this blog post. Raw food is under intense scrutiny, but the facts point to a significant lack of scrutiny towards kibble based foods, despite the fact that in past years dry food recalls have far outpaced raw food recalls, and the most significant recalls, complaints of illnesses, and death have all resulted from contaminated dry pet foods. Warning about raw foods with very few recalls and ignoring safety issues in all other kinds of foods implies that all of those dry and canned foods are inherently safe, which is certainly not the case - especially if they aren't being tested.  Read More Here

Our Take on the Orijen/Acana Class Action Lawsuit - I’m sure you might have heard some things about a class action lawsuit filed against Champion Pet Foods, the makers of Acana and Orijen pet foods. We believe the claims asserted in the lawsuit are merit-less and Champion Pet Foods does intend to vigorously defend itself in the litigation. Read more here about why we feel confident about our decision to stand by this trusted food here.
Neighborhood News:

Prince Coffee Opens - North Portland's Prince Coffee opened their 2nd location today in the new building at NE 46th. It's a beautiful space. They specialize in Stroopwaffles (pronounced like "Rope", not "Rupe"), a decadent crisp waffle cookie filled with buttery cinnamon caramel. Pro-tip: let it rest on top of your hot coffee for a few minutes to soften it...

Have You Been into Beaumont Barber? They've done a beautiful job in their space too (right next door to Prince Coffee), and the owner and employees are great. They not only carry a full line of men's grooming products but surprising additions like beautiful turntables and a complementary selection of vinyl, handcrafted women's earrings, and some great Beaumont Village T-Shirts. Stop in and welcome them to the neighborhood!

My Girlfriend’s Closet is under new ownership and will soon be getting a big makeover, reopening under a new name.
