Subject: Happy Spring!

Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets! We raised  $1257 for Oregon Shores!
The Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition was founded in 1971 to protect the public interest in Oregon’s beaches established by the Beach Bill. Oregon Shores became a 501 (c) (3) non-profit in 1991. The organization’s mission has widened over the years to encompass conservation of the environment of the entire coastal region, from the crest of the coastal mountains to the edge of the continental shelf. SPRING HAS SPRUNG!
I took a walk with a close friend when the cherry trees were bursting with flowers and every spring I think our Fremont neighborhood is one of the most lovely places in all of Portland in the spring.
However, for our pets, seasonal changes can bring some discomfort in the form of itchy skin and feet, and humid weather generally kicks off the the flea season. We've got you! Come on in and talk to us about some of our great itch-fighting products like dried nettles (think of it as herbal Benedryl) that can be sprinkled on to food (or you could even make a tea with them if you yourself have problems with spring allergies).

Frequent bathing with a gentle soap like Molly Murial's can also really be soothing to itchy dogs. It's made right in Portland by a very nice lady who took palm oil out of her recipe when I told her about my work in Borneo to fight the decimation of forests for palm oil and lumber, especially in Borneo where orangutans and countless numbers of other endangered wildlife are losing so much of their incredible forests. It's still one of the best products we carry on our shelves! Some people are surprised at how easy it is to bathe dogs with a bar soap, as you can hold onto the dog with one hand and rub the soap lather around with your other hand, instead of fussing with bottles and caps, etc.

In between baths, regular checks with a flea comb will help you stay on top of the flea situation (put a few drops of dish soap into a bowl of water so you can drop the fleas you catch into it, as nothing's more annoying than a flea that gets away!) Dog owners can also use a light spritz of flea repellant before outdoor excursions, and cats are lucky enough to have Cheristin products, which are easy to use, and holistic vets like it better than more toxic products.

Walter's Corner!
It recently occurred to me that Mike and I are currently the only cat owners on staff these days. I don't think that's ever happened in our close to 19 years of business! Our staff is very well educated about Cat Behavior and Nutrition most have direct cat experience. We all love the kitties! I'll be working in tips and advice in these newsletters (don't miss the link above, as it covers a lot of ground, especially for new cat owners), and highlighting some of his favorite products :) In the meantime, check out his Instagram Feed:  @Walter_Underfoot

SHOW OFF YOUR CATIO!
What is a catio? A catio is a way for cats to be able to be outside without being able to be killed by a coyote, hit by a car, or decimating our native bird population. (Researchers estimate that one pet cat kills one to 34 birds a year, while a feral cat kills 23 to 46 birds annually. Outdoor cats kill between 1.4 billion and 3.7 billion birds a year, says a recent study.
Every year, the Feral Cat Coalition holds a Catio Tour , where you can see a variety of clever catios, some big like in this photo, and some small. We're talking about building a small catio for Walter that connects to his favorite window for birdwatching. mark your calendar for Saturday Dec 9th and get your tickets early!
