Did you know that when we opened in 2004, we were the first environmentally friendly pet supply store in the nation? We searched far and wide and couldn't find another.
Our first task was to define what makes a product qualify as "Green". Here's what we decided

Qwizls!Another great toy from West Paw Design! We love West Paw - they check a lot of boxes for the kind of products we define as Green and love to carry. West Paw toys and beds are made in Montana. Buying products made in the USA not only supports our economy, it uses far fewer resources than things made overseas - think of all of the fossil fuels used to transport raw materials to China and then to the U.S. then across the country to a distributor, then out to the stores! These toys are Nontoxic and Durable - the longer a toy lasts, the fewer toys end up in landfill. Not only that, but if your dog is able to chew a piece off of the toy, we'll give you a one time replacement and send the toy back to West Paw to be Recycled into new toys! We love to support a company like this that has gone above and beyond to be a Sustainable Business
These new interactive treat-dispensing toys keep dogs stimulated and pleasantly puzzled. Its brilliant design extends the life of expensive dog treats (think bully sticks or Whimzees sticks) while prolonging play to keep dogs interested in their own snacks and away from shoes. Qwizl is also great for interactive play so go ahead and toss it for them after the treats are gone. Here are some good tips on how to use it.

Ento Bento Treats!
These great new treats are going over so well with dogs! They're fairly unique - they're made with cricket protein! Before you say "EEWWW!" consider these interesting facts:
- Did you know it requires 2,000 gallons of water to produce only 1lb of beef? It only takes one gallon of water to raise 1lb of crickets.
- They can be grown in a small amount of space and require very few resources, making them one of the very most sustainable proteins. About 30% of the world's land is used for livestock. This is a concern as our world population expects to reach 10 billion in 2050.
- Crickets produce 80% less methane than cattle. Methane is the primary component of natural gas, accounting for 16% of all greenhouse gas emissions resulting from human activities. Initiatives to reduce methane can rapidly reduce global warming potential.
- They're great for dogs that are allergic to other proteins, and in fact contain 3X more protein than beef, 2X more iron, and are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.
- These smell so nice to the humans, and the dogs really seem to love them! They're available in Sweet Potato Cinnamon and Pumpkin Blueberry.

We're so excited to have found this wonderful cat furniture made locally in Bend with salvaged wood! They're really neat looking and very sturdy! We brought a small order in this week and it's going well, so we'll be making another one after the sale. Feel free to come in and pick any piece from the catalog of choices. | | | | Tender and True Organic Cans!
Many people wonder why our food room isn't dominated by Certified Organic foods, as we're a Green store. Part of the reason is that there aren't as many organic foods on the market as you'd think. The other reason is that because organically raised meats are expensive, commercial companies sometimes use a little organic meat and a whole lot of (perhaps organic) grains, making the diet too high in carbs to be appropriate nutrition for carnivorous dogs and cats.
Good News! We're bringing in some new cans for dogs and cats! This brand used to be sold only at Whole Foods, but now has expanded into the independent pet store market, and it's both meat-forward and reasonably priced! They use organic or antibiotic free certified human meats and MSC certified fish. These dog and cat cans should be here next week!

Pet Wellbeing Tinctures!
You know how sometimes the universe just seems to be telling you to do something? That happened to us recently, and now I can't wait until the next newsletter to tell you about what we've found. We stumbled on this brand of tinctures a while back that looked great, but we worry sometimes - how do we know they'll work? Is it a big risk for us to spend money on a line that might not sell? Then people started calling to see if we carried it, as they had found it online when searching for answers to their pet's health problem, or they've heard something from someone who was using it. It was happening a lot, so we decided to look at them again more seriously. A woman searching for the cancer support tincture told us that both her vet and her oncologist told her they had seen good results. So we asked Dr. Keith and he said that he likes the company and has seen good results with both the kidney and thyroid tinctures. So, we're very excited to be bringing in these wonderful tinctures made with organic and ethically sourced herbs, and we think they're going to be very helpful to a lot of dogs and cats suffering from of a variety chronic health conditions (chronic skin/ear problems, cancer, heart problems, urinary tract issues, kidney, hyperthyroid, tracheal collapse, senility, chronic loose stools or constipation). I urge you to take a look at this line and especially to read the testimonials. They're impressive. We can't bring in every formula they make, but we have a lot of them. They should be here next week!
