Subject: Green Dog Will Be Closed for Juneteenth!

CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH

Attention!

Green Dog will be closed Friday!
We are following the lead of the owner of
Salty’s, 3 Dogs, & Fang Pet and Garden and declaring that our store will be honoring Friday June 19th as a holiday worth celebrating!
“Juneteenth” is a celebration of the end of slavery in
our country. We believe all citizens of
this country, a country that bases a
large part of its identity and reputation
on “Freedom” should be celebrating this important landmark in our
collective history.

We’d like to encourage you, as we have encouraged our staff, to pay homage in some way to the day. If you are not peacefully protesting, perhaps you read about some element of civil rights history you're not familiar with like the Tulsa massacre. Or making even a small donation to an organization that's working hard to create true equality. Or even just sharing the knowledge you gain or giving a shout out to the organization you've found in a social media post that day, so that others might explore them. Or encourage people to research and vote for candidates who have equal rights as a priority for their work. Perhaps sharing this video with your school aged kids or your friends who have kids.

Equality For All: We're also celebrating the long due decision by the Supreme Court that now officially protects gay, lesbian and transgender employees from being disciplined, fired or turned down for a job based on their sexual orientation.
NEXT WEEK!!

Green Dog will be donating a percentage of our sales for the week to two organizations: First is the Equal Justice Initiative. EJI is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons. They work with communities that have been marginalized by poverty and discouraged by unequal treatment. They are committed to changing the narrative about race in America. EJI provides research and recommendations to assist advocates and policymakers in the critically important work of criminal justice reform. They publish reports, discussion guides, and other educational materials, and their staff conducts educational tours and presentations for thousands of students, teachers, faith leaders, professional associations, community groups, and international visitors every year. They challenge the death penalty, extreme sentences for children, excessive punishment, and abusive prison conditions through litigation, advocacy, and education. They share America’s history of racial injustice, from enslavement, racial terror lynchings, and segregation to mass incarceration. Check out this amazing tool they've created!
Second is TBD, but it will be a local organization for sure. Stay Tuned!
JULY 4TH IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!

The cancellation of public fireworks displays makes us wonder what this year's fireworks noise is going to be like in the neighborhoods. If you have a new pet, it's important to start developing a plan very soon for acquiring the tools and planning the strategies you might need to get through the holiday safely with minimal fuss. Noise phobias are hard to undo, and many pet owners dread this holiday with good reason. It's a good idea to start now to try a calming product or two to see what works best - you can always return what doesn't suit your pet and experiment with the product that works best for your pet. Please read this Green Dog Blog Post which covers how to condition your pup to think the loud noises are OK, a list of the calming supplements we carry, and important safety tips you might not have considered, whether or not you celebrate this holiday outdoors.
BISON TRACHEA TREATS!

Chewing is good exercise and a good time filler for dogs. In the last issue we turned many of you on to the value and durability of the Bison Split Shins.Today I'd like to tell you about Bison Trachea!
In our quest to find more sustainably/humanely raised chews, we dug deep to find more buffalo products. Buffalo (also called Bison) are native to our grazing lands, so they’re softer on the environment than cattle which tend to have more of a negative impact on their grazing lands and riverbanks. We were somewhat surprised to find out that these days buffalo are being factory farmed. When we first opened, if it was buffalo, it was guaranteed that it was grass fed and finished. Now with their popularity as human food, the pressure’s on to grow more of them. However, we did find some lovely grass fed and grass finished buffalo trachea chews - big, hard tubes rich in chondroitin and other joint supportive nutrients that last a pretty long time for most dogs. We also sell little trachea pieces (they cut the big tubes into little slices) for small dogs and puppies. These little rings are a handy quick treat for bigger dogs as well as a good little project for puppies. They're also perfect for stuffing into treat toys like the Toppl or frozen inside something moist inside of a Kong, with the tip sticking out just a little. If you love the trachea tube pieces, they're available in bulk bags!
CHERISTIN FLEA CONTROL FOR CATS!

Finding safe and effective flea control for cats has always been a challenge for us. Cats are much more sensitive to the chemicals and even essential oils in flea preparations, and many insecticides simply cannot be used on them. We of course prefer to reduce the use of pesticides/chemical exposure whenever possible, but many less toxic options for cats either don’t work well, or they’re simply not pleasant for cats (such as topical repellents, which have to coat their hair, which they generally hate!) Indoor cats without dogs in the home can sometimes go without constant flea treatments, especially when using a product like Fleabusters (a fine nontoxic powder that is sprinkled on and then swept into the fibers and which lasts in carpets and protects against fleas for up to a year even with normal vacuuming). Of course doing frequent checks with a flea comb to help ensure that they remain flea free is critical. Indoor/outdoor cats are a greater challenge during flea seasons, as they’re more likely to be directly exposed to fleas every day.

A few years ago when Otis (our senior indoor cat) started clawing his hair out and quickly developed big scabs and bald patches, I started going through his coat with a flea comb, but couldn’t find fleas or flea dirt. It was a challenge as his hair was long and dense. We had to put him in a little fleece sweater to keep the damage of his scratching to a minimum, which he hated (but he looked so cute!) Finally after a few weeks of constant combing and brainstorming about other causes, I found a single flea and was relieved - at least it opened up a way to help him. Clearly he had developed a case of flea allergy dermatitis and it was critical to get rid of them. The topical repellents were nearly impossible to use on his very fine fluffy hair, and he really seemed to be offended by the smell of them. I went to my holistic vet at Two Rivers Veterinary clinic and she recommended Cheristin flea treatment for cats. It is a tiny tube of liquid that you put on their skin at the base of their skull, and it’s free of the many scarier side effects that other big name flea treatments can cause. I found it easy to use and it started helping right away. (I also applied Fleabusters powder to every carpet in the house, including under the couches, to ensure that any fleas that were already in the house wouldn’t survive, including the eggs and larvae that were likely there) and it cleared up our problem. The next month he scratched a little and I gave it again, and didn't have to use it again (I believe that was because of the Fleabusters). One of our employees used Cheristin on her very health-compromised cat who had terrible skin issues, and even that cat had no issues with it irritating her skin at the application site.

Cheristin has traditionally only been sold through vets offices but it has never required a prescription. Other holistic clinics in the area also have carried it, including Irvington, Lombard and Kenton Vet. We carry single tubes and 3-packs, and it can be used monthly if needed.
Lick Lick Pad!

Lots of you have had to do a lot of grooming care at home, and we do like tools that make any of that easier for you! This is a genius device that helps to distract your dog during bath time, brushing, and nail trims. It sticks to clean polished surfaces such as tub walls, refrigerators, windows or countertops. Its nubby surface is perfect for smearing with peanut butter, yogurt, etc. Check out this video. It could also help your dog through fearful situations (you can put it on the front of the washing machine or on a patio glass door, etc), or simply just occupy them on a rainy day.

DON'T MISS THIS DEAL!

Stella & Chewy's is offering a $10 off of all big bags through the end of June! Heads up to you Pure Vita Feeders! This food makes a nice easy change from Pure Vita, as it has a limited ingredient Turkey, Limited Ingredient Duck, and a simple fish formula as well as their blended proteins, all of which do in fact have better quality proteins than the Pure Vita foods. Rotation is important for all kibble fed dogs, as different brands give them a greater variety of nutrients. Stella & Chewy's also is one of the few baked kibbles on the market, a process that protects the integrity of the delicate amino acids that are so critical to our dogs' health better than traditional kibble processing methods. It's also coated with delicious freeze dried whole foods. Give it a try! (we'll transfer your frequent buyer credits if you end up loving it like so many customers do!)

We want to thank all of you that have been so patient and supportive of our new rules. We know people are feeling crabby about the world being so upside down, but the specter of spikes resulting from big groups of protesters crammed together for weeks hangs over us. We know that if any one of us were to test positive for this virus that it would mean that we'd have to shut our store down for a solid two weeks. This would be a big financial blow to our business. We see from 60-80 people a day in person, and with about 40% of positive cases being asymptomatic, we know our risk is real. We can't wait for things to change too!
