Fremont Fest is Coming!
Join the Parade! Come to the Sale!

The 32nd annual Fremont Fest is coming up on Saturday August 4th! If you’re new to the neighborhood, this is an annual event put on by the Beaumont Business Association. The businesses on NE Fremont St. want to thank you for your continued support by putting on this fun festival for the neighborhood!

Always held on the first Saturday of August, the street is shut down to traffic for the day, with more than 300 vendors, multiple music stages, a pub crawl, and so many free fun activities for kids  (a new Kid's Zone this year has an amazing assortment of activities and games!) with many businesses on Fremont offering great specials! See our sale info below.

We start the whole thing off with a fun community parade! Please March with us!
Green Dog coordinates the parade each year, and aims to make it
a celebration of the families, children and pets of the neighborhood. We’ll be joined again by the marching band "The Brass Roots", leading a procession primarily made up of kids on decorated bikes and pets (many in costumes!) We’d very much like to have you join us - lets make this the biggest pet parade yet!

Come as you are, or dress up your pets and yourselves if you like. You could even make a “float” using little red wagons, etc!

Great Prizes for Kids will be given for Best Costume, Best Float, and Best Decorated Bikes, and on the pet parade side, for the 3 Best Pet Costumes, Best Coordinated Human/Dog Costume, Most Enthusiastic Marcher, and Biggest Doggy Smile, with a few Wild Card Prizes for unexpected awesomeness, like the year a family brought their group of Shetland ponies, or the very laid back cat that was carried in the parade. (Please only bring animals that would enjoy the experience).

Meet at the Beaumont Middle School Saturday by 9:45am for costume judging - the parade heads out at 10am and makes its way on up to NE 52nd Ave.

At the end of the parade, come back to cool down in the store and get:

Fremont Fest Sale!

On Saturday August 4th from 10-5 during Fremont Fest, Green Dog will be having a store-wide sale! This sale is no secret, just come on in and take advantage of 15% off of any regularly priced item that isn't pet food. Chews, toys, treats, leashes and collars, supplements, etc are all on sale! If you choose to buy something big like a cat tree or a bed, we'll be happy to hang on to it til Sunday when cars can park on the street again. Anyone that marches in the parade will get a voucher that increases their discount to 20% off!
It's Too Hot!
Swamp Coolers Save The Day!

Greta and Murdock love their Swamp Coolers. Greta is a black dog - black dogs absorb the heat of the sun more than lighter colored dogs. Murdock is a Husky, so we know summer is tough for him. Breeds like Bulldogs, Frenchies, etc. with shorter faces often have a very hard time with heat too, but just about any dog can become dangerously overheated on a hot day. These genius "jackets" from Rough Wear reflect sun and actively cool your dog! Simply soak the Swamp Cooler in cold water, wring it out and the moisture slowly evaporates and cools the dog. They are a fantastic invention. Don't miss out on this amazing product. Your walks can be longer in the summer, your dogs can hang out with you in the yard without baking, and there's no need for your pet to miss out on excursions or festivals like Doggy Dash or Fremont Fest due to the hot sun.
Be Careful of the Pavement Temps!

As the Festival day progresses, the temperature of the road surface gets hotter and hotter. With more than 125 vendors out on the street, it's easy to get distracted and not think about how hot that blacktop is getting. Last year the pavement got to 145 degrees, a temperature that can cause permanent damage to their pads.

HERE"S THE RULE: Put the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 full seconds. If it's too hot for the back of your hand, it's too hot for your dog's feet.
It Dangles Your Doody

If you’re on Next Door, you’ll see frequent threads started by justifiably annoyed neighbors who have full poop bags left on their lawns. It’s better than leaving plain old poop in the yard, but not by much, especially if you don't even own a dog. Just about every day that we come to work we are greeted with full poop bags on our doorstep (we’d prefer flowers or candy in the future please) or in the planters. The issue is that though most people know that they should be picking up poop, they just don’t want to carry it. Simple cheap device to the rescue!! This tough rubber doohickey attaches easily to any traditional or retractable leash, and multiple knotted bags of poop can be stuffed through it to securely dangle them so you don’t have to carry them. Nifty!

Public Service Announcement: We’ve tried for years to get more trash cans on the street (the city, Waste Management, Trimet, our landlords in both buildings that Green Dog has been in, etc) without luck. There is some promising news about this from the Beaumont Business Association for the future though. In the meantime, you might not know that there are trash cans outside at Grand Central Bakery and Beaumont Market.

Delicious Fishes!

Did you know we have lovely bags of Oma's Pride whole Sardines in our freezer? These are a fantastic whole food topper for your kibble a few times a week to add valuable whole food nutrients! They're frozen separately for easy feeding. Not only are they great for Omega 3 fatty acids, but did you know that fish is a fantastic source of natural taurine? I hope you saw this important article in the last newsletter, especially if you have a dog over 40 lbs that eats kibble. New research shows a serious uptick in reports of heart problems in dogs due to taurine deficiencies. The good news is they're easy to prevent. Your dog will be very excited with a fish for breakfast a few times a week!

Help Out a New Local Business! We're very excited about Heim Bakery which will be opening at 7137 NE Fremont. They could use some help. They've got a Kickstarter going to help them with their many expenses and get them open sooner! I just donated $10 for a drink and treat when they open, which is basically just paying in advance for the stuff I would buy the first day they open. Check it out - yum!

Green Tip!
Buy organic cotton products. It takes 713 gallons of water to make a non-organic t-shirt. 713 gallons of water is enough for a person to drink for 900 days. The water consumption of organic cotton is 91% lower than conventional cotton. Check out Nat Geo's overview of the big impact that simple changes can make for water use here
