Subject: Big 14th Anniversary Sale!

Green Dog Celebrates 14 Great Years!!
Don't Miss The Big Sale!

It’s been our pleasure and our honor to serve you and help your pets lead healthier lives while doing the very best we can to be the most sustainably-minded pet supply store in the nation. We’ve known many of you since we first opened and we meet fabulous new customers every day. All of those relationships mean a great deal to us.

We want to thank you by having a big sale and a giant cake! Please join us Saturday October 13th from 10-6 and take 20% off of all regularly priced items except pet food. (Treats and chews and toys and cat furniture and leashes and collars and beds and supplements, etc are all on sale! It’s a great time to stock up).

For those of you who are new to our store, allow me to toot our proverbial horn: We opened in 2004 as the first environmentally friendly pet supply store in the nation. The city has consistently awarded us Gold level ratings for sustainable business practices since they began the award program, and in fact, when we moved to our new location in 2010, we had higher scores than any other retail store in Portland (not just pet supply stores). We’ve also been grateful to win Spot Magazine’s Reader Poll for many years in a row in categories like Best Neighborhood Pet Supply Store, Best Holistic Pet Supply Store, and our favorite: Best Food Consultant. We take animal nutrition very seriously, and we and our employees are constantly and deliberately seeking new knowledge to better help you.
This is a big difference we’d like to point out to you between an excellent independent pet supply store (a category that also includes Meat, the Filling Station and Salty’s) and a big box store like Petco or Mud Bay.
We believe that the quality of advice you can get from a really dedicated, knowledgeable and experienced staff is worlds apart from corporate stores with high turnover rates and cookie cutter training. It’s the reason we opened 14 years ago, and we still strive to live up to this goal.
It’s Time To Vote for Top Dog Awards!!

If you’d like to give us an anniversary present, go to Spot Magazine and Vote For Us for Best “Food Consultant - Pet” and Best “Neighborhood Pet Supply Store”!

A SPECIAL THANK YOU!

We’d like to say a big thank you to all of the customers that bought raffle tickets and came out on Sept 22nd to support our local business friends Beaumont Barber Co and Prince Coffee, who have been closed since an August 30th fire. The raffle alone raised almost $500! Even the fire department rolled up in their big red truck to support the event. We donated 25% of our sales that day to these two businesses as a gesture of community. The coolest thing was that when we walked the street to talk to other businesses and ask them to post our flyer advertising the event, several of them stepped up to help as well, either by donating raffle prizes or a portion of their sales. Please give thanks by visiting Little Griddle, Wildhearts Wellness, Dee’s Golden Door, Alameda Brewing Co, Perlot Restaurant, and Paperjam Press!
Good News: Prince Coffee hopes to reopen on October 9th!
Bad News: Beaumont Barber has not been allowed to begin any cleanup due to the C.S.I. type inspectors that have to finish their evaluation of the faulty piece of equipment that caused the fire, so they will be closed for quite some time. Next time you’re at Green Dog, don’t forget to pick up coupons to these businesses for when they reopen!

Why did we do that?
We love Portland and as it changes with the times, we want it to remain a place where community matters, neighborhoods look out for their own, and people place a high priority on supporting locally owned independent businesses. (It's in our mission statement: Please see our official Social Responsibility Mission Statement at the bottom of this newsletter)
$20 Fear-Free Nail Trim Event!

The great Trailblazing Tails has a fantastic service where a vet tech and a trainer take the time to make each nail trim safe, positive, force and fear-free! They’re also very interested in teaching owners how to desensitize the nail trimming experience at home and make it more positive and successful.

Cycle Dog High Roller Ball!

This is exactly the type of product that we love to sell. Made in the USA from “Ecolast” Post-Process Recycled Material, this toy is designed with a fun bounce, grooves that hold cookies, and a neat hole in the middle to hold a stick shaped chew. It's even a great water toy that floats above the water surface. Cycle Dog is a fantastic local company, based right in Portland, OR. Buy local!
Applesauce & Pumpkin puree!

Another neat new toy stuffing ingredient in the store: a 6-pack of 4oz cups of applesauce mixed with pumpkin puree - no other added ingredients. Putting soft foods in toys like Kongs or Toppls and then freezing them can be a great way to make them last longer. You could even mix some of their breakfast food with applesauce/pumpkin, freeze it in a food toy for the next morning and their meal can keep them busy while you get ready for work. Apples are a great source of important antioxidants, flavonoids, and dietary fiber. Also, apples contain pectin, which helps bulk up the stool to treat diarrhea and constipation, as does pumpkin. Unsweetened applesauce also makes a good treat for dogs that need lower fat diets. Pop a cup in the freezer to make it an apple frozen treat for licking. Nom Nom!
PLEASE Scoop the Poop!

Sick of poop on your lawn? These beautiful metal signs ask nicely but directly to remind your neighbors to do their "Doody" and pick it up. They're fully waterproof, UV resistant and mounted on heavy duty aluminum – think street sign durability! They can be easily nailed to a stake or a tree. Proudly made from scratch on Bainbridge Island, WA. From design through production they work hard to create the highest quality products and keep jobs in their community.
Neighborhood News!

FRIGHT NIGHT ON FREMONT Oct. 31. 4-6 p.m. Family-friendly trick-or-treating at nearly 40 participating businesses with Golden Ticket prizes at sponsor businesses. 6-8 p.m. Haunted house - for the brave – at Fremont Commons Courtyard. Free.

The last two spaces have been rented in the new building on NE 45th and Fremont - one will be a yoga studio, and we're keeping our ear out for that the other will be.

Grand Central is the first B Corp Certified bakery in the Pacific Northwest. They are officially a force for good, promising to work with mission-aligned vendors who are committed to sustainable values such as livable wages and benefits, stability for independent farmers, support of non profits, immigrant rights and workplace equality. We're definitely aligned with B Corp values here at Green Dog and we'd love to be an official B Corp, but the certification process is incredibly complex and difficult! Go Grand Central!

Basic Market - In September, Basics Market opened its first store on the ground floor of the new Portland Clinic building at 5035 N.E. Sandy Boulevard. Basics Market is backed by the founder of Pacific Foods. The new company aims to reinvent the traditional grocery store concept with a small footprint that integrates a food market, a nutrition classroom and a discovery kitchen. Its mission is to increase access to foods at their peak nutrition.

Here’s a neat story of a local woman that took it upon herself to create something to promote community and sustainability.

Nest Playground has opened at NE 65th and Sandy. more here
Our Social Responsibility Mission Statement:

You can see that we feel strongly about doing our very best to carry sustainable, thoughtfully sourced products, but a company is much more than the products and services it sells. Our feeling of connection and responsibility to our customers and our community goes to the very core of the way that our company conducts business. We love our employees and believe in supporting them as much as our business can support (and then some), we love our customers and try to always go above and beyond to help them, especially when their pets encounter challenges to their health and happiness. Our long term relationships with our customers and their pets mean more to us than we can tell you. We love our neighborhood and we help to plan, sponsor and participate in neighborhood events. We love our city and its amazing animal and environmental nonprofits and we donate large amounts of goods and services to support their efforts (here’s a big one). "Think Globally and act Locally" may be a well used phrase, but it is at the heart of everything we do.
Thank You For Your Support!

See You Saturday!
