15th Anniversary Celebration Sale!
Where does the time go? More
importantly, how can we ever say thank you enough for your support
through the years? It amazes us how many customers that once came in to
welcome our little business in the very beginning have stayed with us
this whole time. You've watched us expand in our old location and then
followed us as we moved up the street, and you and your pets have
provided us with friendships and a sense of community that we have
valued more than we can tell you. Through those years, you've brought us
your tiny baby puppies and kittens, and we've had the unique privilege
to be a part of their lives as they grew and matured, often developing
close friendships with them and with you. There is part of that process
that can be difficult, but it's one we hold dear - to stand with you and
do what we can to help as your pets face challenges in life, and to support
you as you face the heartbreak of their loss. We knew when we started
that we would face loss, but the number of times our hearts have been
broken is sometimes overwhelming. However, more often than not, some
time passes and we see you with a new little life in your hands
and we are thrilled to help you begin again. What a special job we have!
We want so much to let you all know, whether you are just finding us
now or have been with us through the whole journey, that we are so
honored to have your support.

| 2nd Annual Holiday Calendar Photo Contest!
Enter your favorite photo of your pet and the winning photos will be featured in the 2nd edition of the PDX Pet Calendar! First place will be featured as the big photo for the month, and the 2nd and 3rd place photos will be included on the calendar page below. You may also see your photos in the newsletter, on our blog, or in Green Dog social media posts.
I’m excited to tell you how this calendar came about. Last fall, the owners of 12 local independent pet supply stores met to discuss the need to come together in a cooperative effort to promote the value of independently owned local stores over big box store chains such as Petco and Mud Bay. We believe that cookie cutter stores and rudimentary employee training programs are no match for the quality care and advice you receive from educated, experienced independent stores.
We also believe that locally owned independent stores are at the very heart of what makes Portland a special place to live.
This group of stores has provided over 100 years of combined service to the Greater Portland area. We’re here because we truly care about what we do, and want to remind the Greater Portland area to please support their locally owned independent businesses. Like last year, each of the 12 stores will have a page, and are donating all of the proceeds to a rescue of their choice. This year ours will be going to Cat Adoption Team. (Last year we chose Underdog Railroad Rescue). Look for them this holiday season - they'll make great gifts! |

New Toys From Ruff Wear!
We always say that Ruff Wear makes the best gear, and their toys are no exception. Check out the Gnawt-a-Rock, a treat dispensing toy that's also a great way to make a kibble meal last longer. These are ideal for households with wood floors, as they're rubbery - no loud banging or dented floors. We also recently brought in the Pacific Ring Fling Fetch Tug Toy. Its versatile design engages a range of play styles – especially zealous fetchers and tuggers. Interactive by design, the Pacific Ring’s high-tenacity rope establishes a tug-worthy build and a flexible, flight-friendly shape. For dogs that are tough with their toys, check out the Gourdo. This is another fling, fetch, and tug toy, and Heidi at Meat tells us it stands up better than almost anything she's carried for her two big bully dogs. |
| | Fun New Upcycled Poop Bag Carriers!We were excited to bring in these fun and practical bag carriers from one of our favorite green vendors. They make Green Line Poop Bags, which are some of the greenest poop bags of all time. They can actually biodegrade in a landfill, and they can prove it! (Eventually, I will write a blog post that describes the complexities of the poop bag world, but suffice it to say that what Green Line poop bags do is unique in the industry. No other "biodegradable" poop bags can actually fully biodegrade in an anaerobic landfill devoid of sunlight, including compostable, though it is most important to pick up the poop in any bag and keep the poop and its plastic out of our waterways). Anyway, these one of a kind pouches are actually made from recycled festival banners. They're tough, waterproof, and each one is different! Needless to say, these are right up our alley. |
| | New Wet Cat Food From Stella & Chewy's!
These new foods come in 6 flavors, 3 of them "morsels" and 3 of them "pâtés". All of them are made with 100% human-grade ingredients in a human-grade kitchen. The most important reason we brought them in is that we sampled them on our own cats and wow, are they palatable! We were impressed. If you have a picky kitty, you'll have to give them a try (though cats will be cats, won't they?) Ours is super picky, and he likes them! I can't call them "canned foods", as they come in Tetra Pak boxes, which are great for several reasons: 1) They are easy to open and you can take some out and just fold the tops shut tidily and easily, which means you don't have to use a lid. 2) They are lighter weight than cans and their rectangle shape makes more of them fit in a smaller box. Therefore, they're more efficient to ship and use fewer fossil fuels. 3) They're recyclable in our curbside bins if you rinse them out. |
| | | Look For Fun Halloween Toys This Month!
We have some fun Halloween toys for dogs and cats rolling in! As always, most will be made with sustainable materials, or made in the USA, or by B-Corp companies focused on sustainability, etc. Most importantly, they're really cute, silly and fun! Don't miss our fabulous selection of Halloween cookies for dogs as well. They should be out for sale next week. |

Calling All Spooks and Scaredycats! Join your neighborhood shops and businesses for a safe and Family Friendly Halloween Night! Thursday Oct 31st from 4-6pm, there will be Trick or Treating at participating businesses. From 6-8pm, visit the Haunted House in the Fremont Commons courtyard (in front of our old space). Whisper the secret password "Rats" at the Haunted House to receive a creepy treat!
Historic Beaumont Building Gets New Owner: The iconic building on the corner of 42nd and NE Fremont (where Gazelle and Shop Adorn live) was recently purchased. Apparently there will be some changes, such as renovating the upstairs spaces to make apartments, but the good news is that they won't be demolishing it to make a giant building! Whew.
Sad News- Amenity Shoes has closed their retail space. It happened pretty quickly, but they said that they'll have an online store and will likely have a popup shop occasionally! We'll keep you posted.
