Life's Greatest Adventure!

Hi Friend,

At whatever stage of development your Soul currently is, two things are always happening:

  1. You are learning: because the next stage of your own Soul's growth is currently unfolding before you.
  2. You are contributing: because you have the accumulated wisdom of all the previous stages of development on your Soul's journey, so you have brought all that skill and wisdom to share and contribute in the world.

When we ask ourselves, what is my life purpose? The answer lies in both - what you are here to learn and grow, and what you are here to contribute.

In previous newsletters I've spoken a lot about the sign on your Ascendant (your Rising Sign) and what it can tell you about what stage of the journey your Soul is on, and how it indicates both what you are here to learn, and what you are here to contribute.

But when it comes specifically to making your contribution to this world, and being of service, there are other places we can look and one of those is the 6th house.

The 6th house is the house of service, traditionally ruled by Virgo, and it indicates how we approach our daily work (as opposed to an overall career, which would be indicated by the 10th house). It is in the 6th house that we find the details of how we approach being of service. How we tend to the daily routines of our current job, and any other 'duties' we may have to those who are dependent upon us, like relatives, employees, or pets. It shows us our approach to 'being of service'.

According to Alan Oken, from an esoteric standpoint, the 6th house is where the Soul "seeks to acquire those techniques, processes, and skills that further the unification of the lower and Higher selves". So our Soul puts our talents to good use in service to the plant, animal and human kingdom so that not only may we contribute, but also to reduce our individual sense of separation, and support our return to wholeness. Nature loves a win-win situation!

For this next part you're going to use your own natal chart, so have it handy.

To determine what your Soul is wanting, in terms of you being of service, let's assume you've already looked at Your Rising Sign and your chart ruler
(if not - do make sure you go back to those later because they are very important, when placing everything in an overall context for your life). They are the most important factors affecting your unfolding life purpose. In addition to those, now let's take a look at your sixth house.

Look at your chart and find your sixth house. As we said earlier Virgo is the natural ruler of the 6th house.
Mercury is the personality ruler of Virgo, and the Moon is the Soul Ruler. So the activities of Mercury and the Moon will also be creating opportunities for you to be of service. If those experiences are somewhat challenging, due to difficult aspects, it may ease the situation by asking yourself "how may I be of service here?" Your Soul has chosen those experiences for a reason.

When you look at your own chart though, you will notice that you probably don't have Virgo on the sixth house cusp (although some of you will).
The sign on the sixth house 'cusp' is the sign at the very beginning of the sixth house (see diagram above). Often it overlaps with the end of the 5th house, and the beginning of the sixth. In the example shown above, we can see the sign is Cancer at 20 degrees (º), 9 minutes (') and 56 seconds (").

This individual would approach being of service in a nurturing, empathic, compassionate (Cancer) way.
There would be a caring, compassionate approach towards employees and those whom he or she serves (including pets).  In addition to the sign on the cusp we can also look to the ruling planets, and in particular the esoteric or Soul ruler. The personality ruler of Cancer is the Moon and the Soul ruler of Cancer is Neptune.

So wherever the Moon and Neptune fall in this chart, (and the signs and aspects to them), is going to indicate how this person approaches being of service, and in what area of life (the house position) they may be of service. In particular Neptune, in this example, because that is indicating the impulses coming from the Soul level.

Look to your natal chart and see what sign is on your own sixth house cusp, then use the following chart to determine the personality and Soul rulers of your sixth house:

Next look to see what sign your ruling planets are in, what house they are in, and note any aspects to them.

In particular pay attention to the sign and position of the Soul Ruler of your sixth house. So in our example above Cancer is on the sixth house cusp, and using the chart above we can see that the Soul Ruler of Cancer is Neptune. So we would look to see what sign and house Neptune is in.

So that's enough homework for today! Keep your chart handy though, because next week we'll continue - by looking at what the Soul Ruler of your sixth house may be saying about how you approach being of service.

That's all for now! See you next week and, in the meantime...  happy exploring!

Best Wishes,

Ruth
