| Life's Greatest Adventure!

Last week the Sun entered the fiery sign of Leo marking the beginning of this year's Leo Season. Leo is a very important stage for all humanity at this stage of our evolution because esoterically Leo symbolizes our transition from instinct to intelligent individuality.
It is the stage of our personal and collective evolution where we break away from the herd and take independent, individual action. The Lion learns to stand alone because it is only through our individual experience that we develop self-awareness and, ultimately, self-realization.

| In Esoteric Astrology by Alice Bailey, the Tibetan Master DK describes Leo as 'self-conscious', but he doesn't mean it in the way we might normally think of self-consciousness. What we call 'self-consciousness' is actually a state of concern for how we are viewed by others, and this is a distraction from our true path to self-realization.
In order to walk our own spiritual path we need to break away from the herd and this is the path of Leo. It is in Leo where we experience ego formation, ego inflation, and eventually ego dissolution in the light of the Soul. The 'Self-realization' on the path of Leo, is the realization of our true spiritual nature and this comes through our own individual experience of deep Self-awareness.
The sign of Leo is associated with children, play, actors, acting, and royalty. There are themes of creativity and play. Leo is the sign of Self-exploration, and just as children, we learn best through play. So in the sign of Leo we might act out many roles as we become aware of the dynamics of roles and drama in our lives.
It is in Leo that we first develop a sense of 'me'. The birth of our ego. We then accumulate all sorts of ideas (mental concepts) about how this 'me' is suppose to be. Then we impose all manner of rules on ourselves in accord with how this 'me' should or shouldn't behave. Just like an actor in a play we create a role for ourselves and we act out the part. This is the ego-path that we experience in the early stages of our Leo journey.

In spiritual terms fire is known for it's purification qualities and, as the fixed fire sign, there is an implication that when we walk the path of Leo there is a kind of purification happening. In my articles on Leo I often say that there is a false self and a true self and it is Leo's job to figure out which is which.
The false self is the ego, with all it's 'ideas' and 'mental constructs' about who we are and how we ought to be. It is this false ego-self which is 'purified' through the 'burning ground' on the path of Leo, but not before it has served it's purpose. Remember Leo is also the sign of ego-formation, so why do we develop an ego in the first place? Without our ego, we would never experience individuality and so never make the important transition to full self-awareness.
Our ego is a vehicle that carries us from blind instinct, following the herd, through the process of individualization in which our own experience is recognized, acknowledged and honored. So for all the challenges our ego may present, it is a natural and necessary stage of our self-development.
Once we cultivate greater self-awareness, our ego dissolves, just like shadows dissolve when light shines upon them. It is self-awareness that leads us to the awakening of our sacred body, and the recognition of ourselves as spiritual beings. It is self-awareness that leads us to recognize the presence of our own spirit within, that which we may call our own Soul.
Once we reach the final stages of the Leo journey, we no longer are ruled by our ego fears and desires, but are able to walk through life with purpose, guided by the light of our Soul.

Once we have awareness of our soul, our purpose in life becomes clear. We have recognized our true 'Self', and this is the true path of Leo. |
