Hi Friend,

Pisces, the sign of the sacred heart, invites us to be more conscious than ever of our tangible, experienced, living heart connection to our human family, and to live fully with an awakened heart - in full awareness of the reality of the Universal Love that connects humanity.

What better time then, than to use the current energy of Pisces Season to continue our series on the Foundations of Soul Astrology with an exploration of the twelve zodiac signs that make up the consciousness of humanity.

You can read more about Pisces in my book Soul Astrology -  and watch the video "Pisces Rising: The Pisces Soul" - enjoy!
The Foundations of Soul Astrology - The Twelve Zodiac Signs

Fundamental to any study of Western Astrology are the twelve zodiac signs. The term Zodiac comes from the Ancient Greek word "zodiakos" which literally meant  "circle of little animals." The modern word "zoo" shares the same origin.  In ancient times people lived and worked more directly with animals, so the symbology of the zodiac allowed people to understand specific energetic patterns.

According to Esoteric Astrology by Alice Bailey our Soul’s journey begins in the first Zodiac sign Aries as “a point of light in the mind of God” and travels on a journey through each of the twelve Zodiac signs culminating in the twelfth sign of Pisces. Some astrologers believe we spend up to eight lifetimes in each sign. So a good understanding of the energy patterns represented by each sign is essential to a thorough understanding of your Soul Astrology, especially the energy of your Sun, Moon and Rising Sign.

The Twelve Zodiac Signs in order as they appear throughout the year are:

Aries - cardinal, fire, positive

Taurus
- fixed, earth, negative

Gemini
- mutable, air, positive

Cancer - cardinal, water, negative

Leo - fixed, fire, positive

Virgo - mutable, earth, negative

Libra - cardinal, air, positive

Scorpio - fixed, water, negative

Sagittarius - mutable, fire, positive

Capricorn - cardinal, earth, negative

Aquarius - fixed, air, positive

Pisces - mutable, water, negative

Each sign is described in terms of it's 'modality' (cardinal, fixed and mutable), polarity (positive or negative) and element, which describe more specifically how the energy flows with each sign. We will cover this in more depth later in the series, but just to begin there is a short description below:

The Modalities
The beginning of each season, spring, summer, autumn and winter is marked by the four cardinal signs: Aries (spring equinox), Cancer, Libra (autumn equinox) and Capricorn. The peak of each season is marked by the four fixed signs: Taurus is the fullness of spring, Leo is the height of summer, Scorpio the peak of autumn and Aquarius marks the depths of winter. The mutable signs mark the changing season, where one season rolls into the next - In Gemini spring rolls into summer, in Virgo summer rolls into autumn, in Sagittarius autumn rolls into winter and in Pisces winter rolls into spring. A good way to begin understanding the energetics of our own horoscope is to observe ourselves through the changing of the seasons.

The Elements
A basic understanding of the dominant elements in your own chart will give you a simplified 'snapshot' of your own ego-personality. For example, generally speaking:

• Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), think their way through life;

• Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) feel their way forward;

• Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) focus on action and energy, while

• Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) approach life practically, organising physical resources and putting infrastructures in place.

The Polarity of A Sign*
Each sign is also described in terms of being 'positive' or 'negative'. This is not about one's outlook (optimistic or pessimistic) but describes the flow of energy. Positive signs are said to be 'electric' in that they radiate energy outward, while the negative signs are said to be 'magnetic' in that they attract, or pull energy inward.

The combination of modality, element and polarity gives each zodiac sign it's unique energetic signature. For example, even though they both possess fixed energy, Aquarius - the fixed air sign (positive) uses energy quite differently from Scorpio, the fixed water sign (negative).

The Blended Six
A fully Soul Centered individual is one who is fully integrated. This means they have completed the process of personality-Soul fusion,  integrated their Soul and personality and can now access and fully express the highest octave of each sign. They will no longer experience polarity, so they can express the highest octave of Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, Gemini-Sagittarius, and so forth.

As we journey through this process together, eventually the whole of humanity will collectively shift towards wholeness. The twelve Zodiac signs as we currently experience them will then become what the Tibetan refers to as the blended six:

“The 12 opposites must become the blended six, this is brought about by the fusion in consciousness of the polar opposites. Pause and consider this phrasing. The opposites eternally remain from the point of view of human reason, but to the initiate who’s intuition is functioning they constitute but six great potencies, because he has achieved “the freedom of the two” as is sometimes called.

For instance, the Leo subject who has an initiated consciousness preserves the individuality developed in Leo, as well as the universality of Aquarius; he can function, if he so chooses, as a fully self-identified individual, yet possess simultaneously a fully awakened universal awareness; the same thing can be said of balanced activity and consequent fusion in all the signs. This analysis constitutes in itself an interesting and far reaching field of speculation.”

- The Tibetan, Esoteric Astrology

Because the blending of opposites is such a fundamental concept in Soul Astrology it is vitally important to have a thorough understanding not only of your own Sun, Moon and Rising Signs, but also their opposite signs, and the energetic dynamics between them. It is worth taking some time here now to go deeper in our exploration of the Six Polarities.

The Six Polarities*
The Zodiac is made up of twelve signs arranged in a circle. Each sign therefore has it’s polar opposite on the other side of the circle. So although we have twelve signs, they are grouped into six pairs of opposites. These are called the six polarities.

The six polarities are:
• Aries-Libra
• Taurus-Scorpio
• Gemini-Sagittarius
• Cancer-Capricorn
• Leo-Aquarius
• Virgo-Pisces

Because of the illusion of separation, we tend to think of them as separate, but it is important to remember that they are inherently connected. In Soul Astrology, not only are they connected but they are an important key to unlocking your spiritual journey: your healing journey to wholeness and personality-Soul fusion.

“We may break a piece of magnetized steel as often as we like, we shall never be able to separate the positive from the negative pole; each fragment will always have both. This shows that polarity is an aspect of unity, not an arbitrary duality but an inseparable whole”

– Lama Anagarika Govinda

Opposite signs can be thought of as two ‘poles’ (two ends) of one continuous energetic spectrum. Understanding the totality of this spectrum can lead us out of a sense of duality into a more complete experience. The opposite pole of any sign can therefore be considered as a spiritual “gateway” in the sense that it opens us up to the higher spiritual potential of our own sign. By embracing the energy and character of the opposite sign, we energetically create an evolutionary loop (like the figure-eight infinity symbol) that enables a quantum leap to a higher Soul vibration.

To understand this we have to remember that in Soul Astrology we are always talking about energy and the movement of energy. Studies in quantum physics have shown that matter can act as a particle or a wave depending upon how it is observed . In other words it can appear like a solid object or it can be more like a fluid wave of energy. Essentially there is no separation. There is only a difference of experience based on frequency or vibration. At the denser end of the spectrum light is matter, while at the lighter (finer) end of the spectrum, matter is light:

“there is no difference between energy and matter except for the rate of motion … matter is spirit vibrating at it’s slowest and spirit is matter vibrating at it’s fastest”

- H.P. Blavatsky

Because we are creatures of habit, we tend to ‘solidify’ at one end of a polarity. Through our social conditioning and brain wiring we will tend to have a default set of behaviors and psychological patterns.

Polarization Happens Through Habitual Patterns

Our default patterns are reflected in our Zodiac signs (especially our Sun and Moon). We are born under our particular Zodiac signs because that is the energetic patterning that we are already resonating with as our default way of being. As we repeat habitual, comfortable patterns throughout our lives, our brain becomes wired for that behavior so we become more prone to repeat our familiar habits and less adaptable to change. We become ‘polarized’ and our behavior tends to ‘solidify’ at our preferred end of the pole.

We can be so identified with our end of the ‘pole’ that we fail to recognize the qualities of the opposite sign in ourselves. We may even be attracted to someone with Sun, Moon or Rising Sign in our opposite sign because they appear to possess qualities we think we lack. Although this can be a very comfortable relationship it can also keep us stuck in terms of our own spiritual growth. The ‘honey trap’ is that we might always rely on the other person to provide those qualities in the relationship and fail to develop them in ourselves.

For example if we are a practical, methodical Capricorn, and our partner is a loving, nurturing Cancerian, we might always rely on them to provide the emotional strength and they might always rely on us to be practical, down-to-earth, and resourceful. So we remain polarized and never recognize or develop these qualities within ourselves. If we don’t develop the qualities of our opposite sign, we miss an important opportunity to move towards wholeness.

When we develop the qualities of our opposite sign in ourselves, we move toward the center and bring ourselves to harmony and balance. This breaks our habit of ‘solidifying’ at one end of the spectrum and elevates our consciousness to a new level. It’s not that one end of a polarity is dense and the other more light: at the level of ego-personality both can be equally dense, but once we begin to move toward the other pole, we generate movement which naturally elevates our consciousness. Thus in moving toward the center we arrive at a lighter level of consciousness than is experienced at either pole.

Dr. Noel Huntly PhD explains how this happens in terms of quantum theory and vibration. At lower levels of consciousness we are vibrating at a slower rate and matter is denser. Matter therefore appears as particles that can appear to oppose one another. As we generate movement we increase the vibration and the particles can begin to aid one another rather than opposing. They can move to a harmonious state where they begin to synchronize and harmonize:

“the opposite nature of this oscillation on the lower levels gradually converts to a cyclic 'oscillation' in which the two poles are assimilated, unified, and in effect rotate around in a vortex action---now 'aiding' one another rather than opposing … In addition, in this ascension process, separate vortices become more in phase with one another. Undivided wholeness (for example, a quantum state) is created by putting its parts into phase (into harmony, resonance, 'on the same wave length').”

- Dr. Noel Huntly Ph.D, The Meaning of Beyond Duality

You can use this information to consciously accelerate your spiritual growth in two important ways:
  • by embracing the polar opposites of your personality signs (predominantly your Sun and Moon signs) you expand your perception, and can detect and perceive your more subtle Soul-sign qualities more easily.
  • by embracing the polar opposite of your Soul Sign you raise your frequency, elevate your consciousness, become aware of more subtle energies, and can therefore express the lighter, more subtle, frequencies of your Soul in your everyday life.

Consciously embracing the qualities of your opposite signs moves you toward greater degrees of synthesis and wholeness and thereby accelerates your spiritual journey, your individual process of personality-Soul fusion.

Ultimately you become a fully integrated individual through personality-Soul fusion: in other words you are fully Soul-Centered and experience no separation between personality and Soul.

The Nature of The Six Polarities

Aries-Libra
The Aries-Libra polarity is about the initial impulse to exist, and then the natural balancing of that impulse as all 'things' find their right relationship to one another in the manifest universe. For individuals this comes down to finding the balance between our individual will and right relationship with each other. Read more...

Taurus-Scorpio
The Taurus-Scorpio polarity is all about overcoming our human tendencies for desire and attachment - both of which lead to suffering when taken to extremes. When these energies are 'tamed' they become powerful catalysts for spiritual advancement. Read more ...

Gemini-Sagittarius
The Gemini-Sagittarius polarity is about integrating the esoteric paths of idealism, knowledge, wisdom and love, to arrive at the true state of Divine Union, which the Tibetan Master DK called "Love-Wisdom." Read more ...

he Virgo-Pisces polarity teaches us a lot about love and connection: how we use  discernment to keep our attention on flowing Divine Love through the heart, and then by so doing, we awaken the Sacred Heart of Humanity, which eventually ends all suffering. Read more ...

In studying the twelve zodiac signs and especially your Sun, Moon, Rising Sign (and their opposites), never lose sight of the fact that you are always studying energy patterns. Astrology is simply a way of giving language to describe the underlying energetic reality of the Universe, and your natural place, at home, within it.

"I cannot too strongly reiterate the constant necessity for you to think
in terms of energies and forces, of lines of force,
and energy relationships…
The whole story of astrology is, in reality,
one of magnetic and magical interplay
for the production or externalization of the inner reality…"

Optional Fieldwork for those wanting to go deeper:

  • Download and read Your Essential Guide to Soul Astrology (if you haven't read it for a while, read it again to refresh your memory).
  • Get two notebooks. Use one for your study notes (what you are learning about astrology); and use the other as a reflective journal where you write your deeper insights, self-observations and realisations about YOU that arise from your study and meditation.
  • Self-observation is essential. If you don't already do so, start a regular meditation practice. It can be a sitting or an active meditation, whichever works best for you, to support you in practising self-observation and cultivating self-awareness.
  • Meditate on the energy of your Sun, Moon and Rising Signs, and their opposites, so you become very familiar with them. How does their energy show up in your daily life through your life-force energy (prana), daily activities, thoughts and emotions? Write your insights in your reflective journal.

That's all for now! See you next time and in the meantime...  happy exploring!

Best Wishes,

Ruth
