Astrology is such a vast subject that each area can be a lifetime study in itself. As you know my interest is in using astrology as a tool to support our spiritual awakening which is why, even though I have a background in nursing and midwifery, I have really only scraped the surface of the topic of Medical Astrology.
I do find it interesting though, especially when we take into account our karmic traces, and what karmic 'seeds' we may be carrying over from one lifetime to the next. There is an association with each sign, and planet, and specific parts of the body. For example the kidneys are ruled by Libra and play a huge role in maintaining homeostasis, or balance in the body.
Medical Astrology is one of the most ancient forms of astrology dating back to before the times of Christ. Many people have heard of Thomas Culpeper, author of the famous mediaeval book on herbal medicine (Culpeper's Herbal), but what people often don't know is that he was also an astrologer: and many of his recommendations for herbal remedies, were based on his understanding of astrological associations.
From an astrological perspective we are always looking at energy, and how you flow your energy. It makes sense then, that if you have a lot of planets in Gemini, particularly the Sun and/or Mercury, and you spend a lot of your time thinking and communicating, then you will very likely be using your nervous system more than other people. What then are the implications for your health and well-being, and how do you maintain balance?

Likewise if you have a chart dominated by Saturn for example, how does this affect your spine and skeletal system? Do your heavy Capricorn placements put an overload on your knees?

Included in each book, as part two, is your own personalised Medical Astrology report: this shows your tendencies, karmic dispositions, basically your strengths and weaknesses in how you flow your energy, and how this affects your health, and then which herbs and remedies are likely to be most beneficial for you.

Disclaimer: The author's views differ from my own in some respects, especially around the definition of karma that he uses. Also, as you can see in this sample, the language is mediaeval in parts with references to 'death by plague' or 'given to treachery'! Not surprising given the ancient origins of Medical Astrology, it's popularity during Culpeper's era when people actually spoke like that (really), and the fact that the plague was foremost in people's minds.
Having said that, perhaps we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. I feel there is great value to be had in understanding the basic principles of Medical Astrology and then using that as a basis for deeper contemplation of our karmic patterns and their relation to astrology.
