How Can It Be Religious Discrimination?

Carl Smith was given holy cards and asked to “pray to the saints on the cards” every day. He was Catholic. Everyone was Catholic. How can it be religious discrimination?

It is possible to discriminate against someone of your own faith. And illegal.

Carl Smith, a Catholic, was a trainee in Philadelphia's Department of Licenses and Inspection. He wasn't offered a permanent job at the end of his probationary period (which resulted in his termination), and he sued, claiming that he was discriminated against because of his religion. A federal judge has denied the City's motion for summary judgment and is going to allow the case to go to trial.

So, how can Mr. Smith get a jury trial on "Catholic discrimination"? Read the rest of the story in a new blog post by Robin Shea.

The GEA Forum is a new addition to the website where you can ask questions and provide information to share among Georgia's HR community. Here's one of this month's questions:

How do you handle pay when business is slow and you need to send production workers home?

Click the image above or the link to help out with an answer. We'll post the answers to the questions in future editions of the newsletter and on the website.

Here's What One Attendee of the 2017 Leadership Academy Has to Say

What a pleasure! The HR Leadership Academy has helped me cultivate valuable HR relationships and absorb best practices from other HR professionals from around the state. The knowledge and impact GEA brings to the HR community is extraordinary and a benefit to anyone associated with it. I would highly recommend this opportunity to any HR leader looking for growth and networking opportunities.
