Applicants "Ghosting" Interviews or Start Dates?

Federal Contractors, check your reporting!

The hot job market is producing more ghosts. That’s right, more job prospects means fewer people showing up. A recent USA Today article reports a marked increase in job applicants who are “ghosting” interviews or just not showing up after accepting a job offer.

Employers are responding by increasing the number of interviews scheduled and shortening the window between job offers and start dates to keep new hires engaged. For federal contractors, “no shows” can create problems with accurate reporting.

In a new article in the GEA blog, Constangy attorney Cara Crotty provides advice for accurate designations and “dispositioning.” Applicants who fail to show up to an interview have “withdrawn” from the process. Individuals who receive an offer, but don’t report to work are still “selections.” Federal contractors should examine their application tracking systems and make sure the proper disposition codes are available to accurately track the ghosts.

Salary Budgets Stable according to WorldatWork

On July 31, WorldatWork, the association for compensation professionals, released results of their 45th annual Salary Budget Survey. This year’s survey includes 5,499 respondents in 19 countries. It measures data including base salary increases, merit budgets, salary structure, promotions, and variable pay plans.

The 2018 results showed only slight movement from previous years, up to 3.1% annual rate of adjustment from 3.0% in 2017. WorldatWork projects more of the same for 2019, with a minimal overall salary increase to 3.2%.
In an interview with Wolters-Kluwer, Alison Avalos, Director, Membership & TR Strategy at WorldatWork comments, “Organizations know they need to offer competitive pay to attract and retain top talent but pay isn’t the differentiator that it once was. Staying competitive with pay increases will likely continue, but we don’t anticipate dramatic increases despite the tight labor market and changes to the tax code.”
