Resolving Critical
Issues by Taking
Advantage of Your Talent
By Pete Tosh
The Focus Group

Organizations can be challenged with having the agility to respond rapidly and effectively to their critical business issues. Many formerly successful organizations lacked agility – do you remember A&P, Blockbuster, Circuit City, Borders, Ringling Brothers and Toys R Us?

The larger an organization becomes the greater its talent base and capabilities – but unfortunately communication and problem resolution become more challenging. What’s lacking is not the talent but a means of tapping into the knowledge, skills and experience of that talent – in a manner that generates their buy-in.

There is such an approach – the Action Planning Process. The Action Planning Process consists of a series of steps that:

• Obtains from the individual team members their improvement-oriented proposals for resolving their critical issues
• Then facilitates the team discussing their individual proposals, developing and implementing an action plan that addresses the critical issues

The objectives of the Action Planning Process are to:
• Provide the team members a forum for confidentially voicing their proposals for addressing the critical issues
• Take advantage of the team member’s insights, knowledge and experience - the people who know better than anyone else what should be done
• Improve the working relationships between the team members who ‘must work together’ in order to implement the action plan

The benefits to using the Action Planning Process are:

• The critical issues addressed are ‘real world’, current and of the highest priority to the team – versus ‘top of mind’ reactions during meetings
• Everyone has an equal voice in the process throughout each step creating maximum participation, buy-in and ownership
• Maximum candor since names are never associated with any of the team member’s responses
• It saves meeting time by being able to immediately display and begin discussing the team member’s proposals
• Results in an action plan - that has a ‘life’ after the planning meeting -with accountabilities and deadlines for addressing the critical issues

GEA consultants have successfully utilized this Action Planning Process with organizations in a variety of situations including:

• Team building
• Change management
• Organizational transitions
• Conflict resolution
• Customer service initiatives
• Strategic planning
• Customer advisory boards

"Let's turn over -- a new leaf."

"And, baby, let's make promises -- that we can keep. We'll call it a New Year's resolution . . ."

Now that the New Year's celebrations are over, it's time to start thinking about resolutions. Ugh.

Here are my top picks for employers. Despite the fact that it's 2020, you'll be happy to know that I don't have anywhere near 20 resolutions. Only nine!
