Thank you for joining us on Day 1 of Future Food Asia 2024, The Great Reshuffle.

Nutrition and Inclusion : Opening Keynote

Dr. Shakuntala Thilsted, Director of the Nutrition Impact Platform at CGIAR and 2021 World Food Prize winner opened Future Food Asia 2024 with a keynote, sharing how there is an increase in demand for specific diets targeting the ageing population in Asia.

For many of the new frontier solutions, there are tradeoffs and these solutions may be country or region specific. Transformation must take place so that all are included and no one is left behind.

First six finalist pitches

Today six FFA Awards finalists present their innovations:

The nexus of food innovation and the interplay between sustainability and nutrition

Nutrition scientists and experts emphasized the various layers of food systems and nutritional needs, shedding light on the inherent limitations of viewing food solely as a collection of ingredients. From this perspective, the question isn't so much whether plants can offer the same nutrition as animals, but rather how they can complement each other. Regarding product innovation, panelists underscored the importance of understanding whether consumers are ready and sufficiently educated to adopt a new, innovative product.

How to help start-ups get "private equity ready"?

This discussion between PE and VC investors and a start-up explored the challenges of balancing innovation with achieving early breakeven. It was noted that in the context of higher interest rates, certain scale-up models may no longer be viable. Additionally, growth expectations from investors were discussed, highlighting the importance of strategic funding planning.

The carbon tunnel vision, risks and outlook

While carbon emission reduction isn't the sole solution for combating global warming and may sometimes obscure the broader picture, it remains essential for large-scale nature conservation and restoration. The panelists acknowledged its importance as a much-needed tool. The industry is progressing towards enhancing the integrity of carbon credits, which are significantly more developed compared to biodiversity credits, despite the equal importance of biodiversity conservation. This offers avenues for startups to incorporate carbon credits in their business models.
