We are really excited to be working with Reverend Dawrell Rich of Mount Moriah, along with Spark Makerspace, the Voluntown Peace Trust, Saint Francis House and others to organize this discussion and film screening.
Why is FRESH New London interested in Community Land Trusts?
Because we are small community of just 6 square miles, and land use matters!
Housing Matters! People we garden with and organize with, the families of our youth, and our staff's families-- all of us, really-- experience poor housing options like substandard/ high-cost rentals, inflated housing prices and no clear path to homeownership.
Land Matters! For being such a small, land-constricted town, New London has alot of under-used and vacant land in our neighborhoods that could be put to good use as gardens and green spaces. But, some of that vacant land is contaminated. Some is owned by people speculating on the next housing boom. Some just needs a FRESH set of eyes and alot of elbow grease to be gardens!
Decision-Making Matters! Who decides how New London is developed? Who decides how land is used, sold and taxed?
FRESH New London is part of the effort to organize a Community Land Trust so that we can be part of building a greener, more healthful, more just New London where home ownership is accessible, affordable and sustainable for the people who live here.
