FRESH New London
Dear Friends,

Ghosts and spiders and skeletons, oh my! Autumn is in full swing here in Connecticut, and with it comes one of my favorite holidays: Halloween! It’s so much fun to carve pumpkins, dress up, and maybe get a little bit scared, but the holiday also gives us the opportunity to reflect on the cyclical nature of our world.

We can see death as not only a part of the process, but as the very thing that leads to new life – as the plants and animals return to the earth and decay, nutrients are released that feed the planet and everything that grows in and on it. Endings very often lead to new beginnings, and as we move through the end of our growing season and the end of the year, we can look forward to the spring, when everything will begin again.

In this issue of our Newsletter, we'll reflect on our successful growing season, share some pictures from our most recent event, and let you know about an awesome project that we've been working on.

October also saw the end of our CSA for the season. Between the gardens at Mercer, Cottage St, Connecticut College, Ledge Light Health District, St. Francis House, McDonald Park, and Winthrop, Jennings, and Nathan Hale schools, we harvested and distributed a whopping 6,000.7 pounds of delicious, organic vegetables to our friends and neighbors! Thank you to everyone that participated, and a HUGE thank you to the Connecticut College Sprout Garden!

And finally, we’d like to take this opportunity to let you all know about a wonderful project we have been working on. In May, we came together with different groups, across different missions, to support New London during the pandemic.

We reinforced our connections with Hearing Youth Voices, Step Up New London and the Hispanic Alliance (all partners in big and small ways throughout FRESH’s history) through an informal mutual aid project. FRESH utilized our existing relationship with the Gemma Moran Food Bank to get food for our members and those of our partners. At times, we were also able to add FRESH grown crops to the weekly boxes.

Knowing we could reach even more people, we received a grant from the City of New London to purchase protein and dairy. We are working with Fiddleheads Food Coop so that we can spend those dollars on CT Grown food. At the end of July, we started distributing these foods with our partners at the City of New London, the Health Improvement Collaborative of Southeastern Connecticut, Ledge Light Health District and L+M Hospital..

This week, we delivered boxes of food to 144 households! We’re hopeful that we’ll be able to keep the project going for many more months, as the need here in New London is only increasing.
