Two months ago, one of my customers was bewailing the fact that his books weren’t selling as much as he thought they should.
He told me the story of how much work he put into his writing and now with the earnings figures staring him in the face, he was discouraged.
Yes it takes work to sell books. You have to be constantly marketing AND you have to keep on writing.
I asked him about his Author Platform (website, email list, social media accounts) and what he was doing to promote his poetry books. Turns out Not much.
I asked him if he had poems that were not IN the books and what he did with them. Nothing.
So I told him about Medium. Medium is a platform where writers can post their work and get paid for it. It doesn’t happen by magic, but it is a way of earning extra $$ with the content you already have, or new content you are willing to write.
Like everything, you have to BUILD your own audience, BUT you have access to a huge audience of people who love reading and some of them will show up just because you are there!
So … my friend the poet, decided to give it a try. To tell you the truth he put a pile of hours into it for two months. Last week he sent me a message. He had made his first paycheck of $65 and absolutely loved it. He said he posted a hundred “old” poems and stories and actually got a good response to them.
This conversation got me to thinking about all my other customers who struggle and are frustrated with books sales. Some of their books are amazing — brilliant, with only a trickle of sales.
Medium can do these things for you IF you are willing to put in some work:

3. Medium can add a little or a lot to your revenue stream.
