Subject: Summer News and a Return to the Rotational Model

Family Promise of Butler County Welcomes a Return to "Normal" and Lots of Sweet Kiddos! :)

“I don’t remember the last time we’ve had such good food… and we are so grateful to each have our own mattress to sleep on.”

The above quote is from a mother who was living in a tent with her family of 7 at a local campground prior to coming to Family Promise of Butler County.

When asked how his first week at a local church had been, a 4-year-old who had recently been living with his parents in their minivan, had this to say,

“Oh, we get to play tag as much as we want… I haven’t slept this good in a long time!”

And this from the young boy’s mom,

“[Before coming to Family Promise of Butler County] I had to tell my son’s father he couldn’t stay with us because no shelters would take an unmarried couple.”

Imagine her joy when she learned we have no such rules, and that we are all about keeping families together.

Currently, we are housing 3 families, with 8 children under the age of 6(!), in our local congregations, rotating weekly as we have done in the past. We are so happy to be back to the rotational model, where we can house more families and provide them with the extra love and support that can only come from our committed volunteer base and a comfortable place to sleep at night and warm, homecooked meals.

We at Family Promise of Butler County would like to say thank you, from the bottom of our hearts to all of you who have walked with us, in one way or another, through the Covid pandemic and the many roadblocks it has put in front of us. We still need more congregations to host families 3-4 weeks per year. Please let us know if your place of worship would be able and willing to open their doors to our guests. THANK YOU!!

We have much to celebrate here at Family Promise of Butler County!

  • At the beginning of 2022, we started serving families in our new Day Center. It is so much homier, and the location is great.

  • We are at the halfway point of 2022 and the world has opened back up from the pandemic, which means we are back to utilizing our rotational model. There have been some hiccups along the way, but the host congregations have been just amazing in their flexibility. We are still in need of at least 2 more host congregations for the 2023 calendar year.

  • In the 1st half of 2022, we have served 29 families (29 adults and 57 children) in the shelter. Of these 29 families, 82% were able to successfully leave the program and move into a home of their own.

  • We also continued to provide prevention programming to families that helped to eliminate households from entering the homeless system. Collectively, through our partnership with Support to Encourage Low-Income Families (SELF), and our TANF-funded program, Housing Now Housing Families, we assisted 173 households. All the households assisted received case management services as well as direct financial assistance. We will continue our prevention programming as it has proven to be a cost-effective mechanism to reduce the amount of homelessness experienced by households.

  • On June 11th we held our annual Dot/Dash 5K here in Hamilton. If you did not participate, you truly missed out on a great time! It is always so inspiring to see so many individuals come out to run/walk to raise both funds and awareness of our mission. Please consider participating next year!

Things to watch for in the upcoming months: bi-monthly newsletters, daily Facebook posts, family stories, and the ever-popular Keeping the Promise Gala in October. We hope you will continue to support us, as we work to ensure “that every child has a home”.

Until next time,

Linda

Thank you again to all who came out to participate in any way or in support of Dot Dash 2022. Here are a few photos from the event. Want to see more? Visit our brand new Photo Gallery where you can view, download and share all of the images from that day!

Host Congregation Spotlight

Faith Community United Methodist Church

by Amy Abernathy

Family Promise of Butler County (FPBC) thrives with collaboration and support from organizations all around the community. The past 2 years have brought many challenges and changes to our processes. But one exciting component is back! We have returned to working together with congregations in the area to offer families what we call a rotational shelter model, where houses of faith open their space and compassion in the evening hours and overnight to families for one week, and Family Promise of Butler County offers targeted case management services during the day.

One of our amazing church partners is Faith Community United Methodist Church in West Chester, where the volunteer efforts are currently led by Kim Hollon, one of the founders of Family Promise of Butler County. Kim had this to say about the return to the rotational model, “Faith Community is excited to have Family Promise of Butler County back on site! We have always looked at it as inviting guests into our home. When the families were in the hotels that was a big disconnect for us. Family Promise is about relationships. You can't encourage and lift someone in a meaningful way without being on an equal plain, eye to eye. Over the years we have built a strong core team that recognizes that none of us have walked the same path. Each of us is broken in some way. Each of us is made in God’s image and seeing each other in this light is the fastest way to afford grace and love to one another.

Building relationships is a key component of working with families that are experiencing homelessness, a traumatic event in their lives. Kim shares how Faith Community builds trust and breaks down barriers between the families and volunteers. “One of the hardest but most rewarding times while hosting FPBC is hosting a family on their first night in the program. It is hard because most times they are visibly broken, holding tight to their burdens, potentially not believing Family Promise can make a difference. But we, as volunteers, have seen the transformations. We KNOW how Family Promise helps carry their burdens, helps redirect their path, helps them feel supported, and helps them begin to believe things can and will change. What a joy to be a part of that! Many thanks to Family Promise of Butler County for giving me and Faith Community UMC this opportunity!”
