As we reflect on the past year, we are reminded of the families who have found hope and a pathway to stability through Family Promise of Butler County. Your generous support enables us to provide shelter and vital resources to families with children experiencing homelessness.
Case in point, we recently caught up with Marcy, a graduate of our program. Before becoming homeless, Marcy lived with and cared for her ailing mother. She, her mother, and her young son, who is on the autism spectrum, lived on her mother’s social security. After her mother passed away, Marcy and her son found themselves homeless. As many young families in her position would do, Marcy reached out to friends for help. They bounced between a homeless shelter, friends’ homes, and cheap motels and even lived on the street for some time. Marcy relayed a story about how she once kept her son out of school for 12 days because she couldn’t bear the thought of making him come out from under his warm blanket to take a “shower” in a cold public water fountain. She understood that this would set him back in school but felt it was the best choice she could make at the time. Eventually, through the guidance of a school social worker, she was directed to Family Promise of Butler County. Here in our care, Marcy began working towards her GED, her son went to school every day, and eventually, they moved into a home of their own. Marcy is only one example of the many parents who come to us with their hearts on their sleeves seeking shelter and support to get their children out of unlivable situations.
