In early June of last year, we received a call from a fellow social worker who came across a family living in their mini-van on I-75 (here in Butler County). This family of 7 had been homeless for 6 weeks. Due to an injury that created significant mobility issues for him, “Tom” lost his job in 2021, and “Judy” became his caregiver. Because Tom was unable to work and Judy was not able to maintain full-time employment due to caregiver duties, they fell behind on their mortgage and were eventually foreclosed on. With no funds and no family to help, they were forced to begin living in their van. Consequently, the children struggled to attend school, and the family had no way to shower or do laundry, making life very difficult. Upon entering the shelter program through Family Promise of Butler County, the family was able to shower and do laundry, they felt safe in their sleeping arrangements, and we worked on creating a budget that would work for them. With our assistance, they were able to get a temporary housing voucher, which was then transferred to a permanent housing voucher. Tom, Judy, and the children now have a permanent place to live, rent is based on income (Tom is now receiving social security and Judy works part-time), the children are attending school regularly, they celebrated the holidays without a black cloud hanging over them, and life is definitely looking up! We are so excited for the family and grateful for the fact that we had the resources to step in and assist them in stabilizing their lives. We could not do what we do without your generous gifts, so THANK YOU for your support! |
