Subject: The Quilt Is Never Just the Quilt

Good morning Friend,

There is a moment that happens in almost every quilt shop.

Someone brings in a quilt and starts telling its story.

Not the pattern.

Not the fabric.

The story.

Maybe it was made for a granddaughter heading off to college.

Maybe it was stitched during a difficult season.

Maybe it was the first quilt they ever finished.

What fascinates me is that nobody ever talks about "just the quilt."

They talk about the people.

The memories.

The milestones.

The seasons of life stitched into every seam.

Because the quilt is never just the quilt.

It becomes a timeline.

A memory keeper.

A love letter.

A piece of ourselves left behind for someone else to hold.

This week's Permission to Create reflection explores why handmade things matter so much and why the projects we create often carry far more meaning than fabric and thread.

The Quilt Is Never Just the Quilt

As you read, I'd love for you to think about this question:

What story is stitched into something you've made?

I suspect your favorite project has very little to do with the pattern and everything to do with the memories attached to it.

Happy quilting,

Donna

P.S. The next time you're tempted to call it "just a quilt," remember that someone may treasure it long after the fabric fades.
