Hi Friend,
Today’s story is brought to you by quilters who just wanted to stitch in peace... and accidentally took their tablecloths down with them.
We got this email from a fellow quilter this week, and I can’t stop thinking about it:
“I sewed the tablecloth to my quilt when I first started!
I didn’t have a sewing room—I just put my mother’s old Kenmore machine at the end of the dining table.
My late husband always wanted me nearby, so the dining room was the perfect solution... until!!!
No, I never told him—it was an expensive tablecloth!
Didn’t tell him when I cut it either!!!!!”
That last line? Iconic. I imagine her quietly snipping it free and acting like nothing happened—a true pro move.
And you know what?
I can’t even pretend to be surprised. Because, well... I once did something very similar.
I was happily cutting strips for a log cabin quilt, completely in the zone—music on, rotary cutter flying, feeling unstoppable.
Then I looked down and realized... I had folded my tablecloth over the cutting mat to get it out of the way.
And I had been cutting straight through it.
One beautiful fabric log at a time... I turned my tablecloth into part of the quilt.
Nobody noticed at dinner that night.
But someone did ask, “Didn’t this tablecloth used to have a border?”
Oops.
What about you?
What’s the funniest (or most painful) sewing mishap you’ve had?
We’re collecting stories for our Behind the Seams feature, and we’d love to share yours—anonymously if you prefer!
Just hit reply and tell us what you accidentally stitched, chopped, or snipped.
Because behind every beautiful quilt… there’s usually one very confused tablecloth.
Stay cozy and check what’s under your fabric before cutting.

P.S. Stories like this remind us that the quilting journey is never boring—and always better when we laugh together.
