It was spray baste. It was supposed to be temporary. The table may never be the same.

Hi Friend,

Before I bought my first longarm quilting machine, I was quilting on my domestic machine—like so many of us do when we’re just starting out or don’t have a longarm. I spray basted. I pinned. I winged it.

And one day, I learned the hard way that “temporary spray adhesive” is not always… well, temporary.

I had my quilt top all laid out. My batting fluffed. My backing smoothed. I was feeling confident. I sprayed like a champion.

But I may have, ahem, slightly overdone it.

When I went to lift my freshly basted quilt sandwich?

Half of it came up… the other half was one with the table.

Forever. United in polyester love.

Let’s just say… I gained a whole new respect for overspray.

That’s the thing about basting: it’s supposed to help… but often it just stresses us out. Whether you're on team pins, spray, or “hope and prayer,” we’ve got something that might just make this step smoother.

Shop: Skip the Pins. Save Your Sanity.

This week’s featured product is a longtime fave:

Spray N Bond – a temporary spray adhesive that keeps your quilt layers smooth, secure, and table-free (learn from my mistake).

Lightweight, repositionable, and perfect for machine quilting or applique prep. You’ll wonder why you ever basted without it.

Moral of the story?

Quilting is full of sticky lessons (some more literal than others). And it’s okay to laugh through them, learn from them, and find your next best step—whether that’s perfecting your spray baste technique or upgrading to something a little roomier (hello, longarm!).

If you’re curious about what quilting could look like beyond the kitchen table, I’d love to show you. We offer demos, classes, and no-pressure answers about longarm quilting all the time.

If you’re feeling ready to level up your quilting, we have a 5-day Longarm Academy on the schedule for May 27-31, 2025.

Learn: 5 Days of Longarm Mastery? Yes, Please.

Feeling ready to level up your quilting?

Longarm Academy is your deep-dive into free-motion, rulers, design planning, and more. It’s hands-on, high-impact, and full of lightbulb moments (and projects and laughs!).

Not sure about the 5-days of classes making projects you can take home with you?

Retreat: Need a Place to Stay?

If you’ve got a bit of a drive to get here, don’t stress. We offer overnight accommodations right here at Fox Country Quilts so you can come for class—and stay for the stitching, comfort food, and community.

Just call and ask us to add an overnight stay to your class.

Whether you’re basting, quilting, or dreaming up your next masterpiece, we’re here to help you finish beautifully—without the table mishaps.

Come see us, ask questions, or just tell us about your last quilt disaster. We’ll laugh with you, not at you.

(Unless you glued your quilt to your table too. Then we’ll laugh together. ❤️)

Until next stitch,
Donna
