Golf Classic raises over $55,000 for Abben Cancer Center Patients and Families

Providing an opportunity for fun, fellowship and philanthropy, the Abben Cancer Center Golf Classic took place at Emerald Hills Golf Club on Sunday, August 26th.

The annual golf event, supported by over 75 sponsors and 116 golfers, also featured a public 50/50 raffle, which was a new opportunity in 2018.

Raffle tickets were sold at various locations and provided an opportunity for all community members to get involved. Ticket sales reached $1,880 resulting in a payout of $940 for raffle winner, William 'Bill' McAlpine, and $940 in support of Abben Cancer Center. Bill, said he was in Farmers Bank when he noticed the raffle sign and felt it was a great cause to support.

Much appreciation to our Presenting Sponsors - Shine Bro. Corp. and Farmers Bank.
And thank you to the many sponsors and individuals who make this event successful year after year.

Teaching the importance of clean hands

The Community Health Department of Spencer Hospital recently acquired a Germbuster Kit, through funds provided by donors wishing to invest in health education.

"Hand washing is our best defense against the countless germs that cause illness and infections,” said Colette Rossiter, assistant manager of Home and Community Health. “Unfortunately, kids don’t typically take time to wash their hands."

The “Germbuster” kit provides an interactive, fun way to teach the importance of hand washing. The kit will be used with young children at schools and community outreach events.
The Spencer Regional Healthcare Foundation board recently met and approved its support of a variety of items, including the purchase of Fire Tablets for children using Spencer Hospital's Surgical Services.

"One of our surgeons mentioned that in her experience, children who have access to technology while undergoing anesthesia seem to have less anxiety and fall asleep more peacefully," said Matt Cooper, director of Surgical Services.

"The Foundation board is always looking for opportunities that enhance the care and experience a patient receives at Spencer Hospital," commented Mindy Gress, Foundation director. "Although the cost of this request was minimal, we believe the impact will be great."
