Subject: Who do you think owns what on your plate?

Chances are, it isn't who you think it is...
Hey Food Slayer!

Happy New Year! Or as I have started saying...Happy True Year!

It just seems more fitting. :)

It's January and I'm back in the saddle again, digging deep into our food supply chain and we're kicking off Season 8 with an episode on Food Consolidation. Yeah...it's a regular ol' celebration going on over here.

Forgive my deadpan humor, but this episode is less of an exposé, but more of a...how do you say....connect the dots, episode.

There is way too much information to break down the entire issue of corporate food consolidation, but what I endeavored to do in this episode is highlight some of the top food industries that are controlled by three or four major corporations.

I was also hoping that I could share some insight behind the "who owns what" and guess what I discovered....?

Thanks for being here...let's keep the conversation going so we can all have clean, healthy food on our plates!
Without spoiling the entire episode, I discovered that there are a lot of the same companies who own upwards of 80% of most of our food supply, but you probably knew that already.

Probably everyone you know still eats every day so what's the problem?

The problem is (IMHO) corporate consolidation leaves the food supply chain vulnerable to price fixing and increased prices for the most vulnerable in society (babies, elders and poor people) and gives consumers the illusion of choice.
But the question always remains.... cui bono? And how did we get here...

Interestingly, the Secretary of Agriculture from the Nixon administration played a key role in the "how" we got here. And although I certainly had a few unsavory words for that muthaflocker, I understand the why we got to this point.

We, as consumers, clamored for convenience and cheaper food. So that's what we got, but as with all things, there were tradeoffs.

BIG ONES...

There are billions of dollars being made by these large corporations, many of them with operations in vertical industries, controlling the lion share of the complete supply chain (from the farm to the plate) of so many of our food products, so is this a good thing?

Well, food is pretty cheap, in fact we spend about 17% of our disposable income, thanks to Earl Butz (You'll learn who he is in the episode). And we have more "alleged" choices on the supermarket shelves than we've ever had. However, we have to ask the tough questions like...Do more people have access to healthy food options? Are we eating better products? Are these corporations following the rules, protecting workers and adhering to food safety regulations? Are they helping or hurting our economy, our earth or our health outcomes?

I know what I think...but I'll let you decide.

Thanks for listening. I hope you share this episode with someone you love and I'll see you on the other side of the plate.

Michele
