Subject: So Friend, who's YOUR sugarcane daddy?

Thanks for being here...let's keep the conversation going so we can all have clean, healthy food on our plates!
Who's Your Sugarcane Daddy?
That's a good question...and the answer is..it's probably either a CEO in Florida or Brazil! That's what we're digging into in this week's listener suggested podcast episode...read on...

Hey Food Slayers...
There is a lot going on...the streets are HOT and people have had enough!

But, I hope you are staying safe and healthy with your loved ones.

In the midst of all that is going on, I wanted to give you something to nibble on with your morning Joe! Sugar is such a big part of our diets. It hasn't always been like that, but it is now, and it's pervasive, meaning...sugar is kind of like corn...

IT'S EVERYWHERE!

In this episode we’re talking about sugarcane. Sugar...that sweet, sweet stuff. Now I like sweet treats just as much as the next person but with the global production of sugarcane supplying 80% of sugar consumption in our food, we have to look at the who, the what, the where and why.

The impacts of sugarcane production on our health (especially our children), our environment and our economy are startling. Our "sugar daddy" is the largest corporation producing sugarcane in Florida, and we are getting pimped out, keeping all of us coming back for more - from the cradle to the grave.

Listen in to what I've discovered about where our sugar comes from, what's happening on a global scale, where its influence impacts our politics and how it continues to feed our addiction.

I've personally been suffering from grass pollen allergies (which I've never had before) and I'm not sure that it has anything directly to do with sugar...but it probably does, since sugar does have an impact on the gut microbiome as well as the immune system. I'm not afraid to admit that I am probably just as addicted to sugar as anyone else, but this episode really makes me think twice about buying sugar and adding it to anything.

We get enough of it in our food, especially packaged foods.

Did you know that 74% of the packaged products at the grocery store have added sugar in them?

That fact kinda blew me away. I didn't realize that sugar was almost, if not just as, pervasive in our food as corn, and sugar has no nutritional value.

I won't spoil the rest of the episode, but this one is packed like a sugar cube with interesting tidbits about the sugarcane industry.

And I'll leave you with this...

Though there are 17 states that grow sugarcane in the US, sugarcane accounts for only 2% of the crops grown domestically. However, in one of those states, Florida specifically, makes 30% of all campaign contributions! Let that swirl around in your cup for a second....

I hope you listen in, and remember things like these when you go to the polls this November!

Anyhoo, check out the episode and share it with someone you love!

I'll see you on the other side of the plate.

Chow,
Michele

p.s. The next episode is going to be the second in this series on food additives because we are consuming them at an alarming rate. I wanted to tackle sugar first, since it is by far, THE most used food additive on our plates. Stay healthy...stay safe.
