Fishing Expo Volunteers Needed
FOMR needs volunteers to staff the FOMR table at the Augusta Co. Fishing Expo. A few folks are needed for set up on Friday,  but on Saturday and Sunday we want to have volunteers sign up for 2 hour shifts. Volunteers will sell raffle tickets/ T-shirts, introduce folks to our River Access Program and educate folks about rivers generally and about FOMR! No experience needed. We'd love to have you!
  • SET UP:  Friday, Feb. 14
  • EVENT:  Saturday, Feb. 15, 9am-5pm
                        Sunday, Feb. 16, 9am-3pm
  • LOCATION: Augusta Fishing Expo, 277 Expo Rd., Fishersville, VA

Kate will do *secret magic* on all the signups and crunch out a coverage schedule.  When Kate sends out the finalized schedule to those who sign up, she will include all volunteer's email and phone numbers. That way if something changes and you have to try to switch shifts with someone, you will have the contact info for everyone so you can try to make arrangements.

Water Quality Monitoring Training:
Bug School

FOMR is gearing up for our annual free benthic monitoring training. As typical, we will do the monitorof our 10 sites in  the first 2 weeks of April (weather permitting).

We’ve scheduled our Benthic Training (Bug School)
  • DATE: Sunday, Feb. 23
  • LOCATION: Churchville Library, 3714 Churchville Ave., Churchville 24421
  • TIME: 3-6 pm
Bug School is an opportunity to learn more about benthic monitoring and is geared towards beginners and potential benthic volunteers; experienced volunteers and monitors wanting a refresher; and those interested in becoming certified monitors.

FOMR benthic monitoring involves collecting bugs from the Middle River which are identified and recorded and then returned to the river. By comparing bugs which are more tolerant of pollution with bugs which are less tolerant, we are able to gauge the health of the river. It’s fun to play with bugs, hang out on the river with a great group of folks and participate in citizen science.

Please sign up for Bug School by emailing Pete Cooper. Also, if you have interest in becoming a certified monitor, please let me know.
