| | Cleanup and SteamSweepers Update
As this "goes to press", FOMR is in the midst of our summer river cleanup and as many as 14-15 volunteer teams are out there scouring the river for wayward trash by canoe and on foot. Fifty tires are already out of the river, plus loads of other junk...and we have just gotten started!
Also this week, six volunteers conducted a trash and
river condition assessment of the lower Middle River.
Using Garmin GPS units loaned to us by The Center for Natural Capital we recorded
the location of trash in the river as well as the conditions of the
river bottom, banks, and buffer zones in the 16 miles from Damtown to
the North River.
The largest portion of the trash
consists of old tires, fence, and agricultural plastic. The data will be used by StreamSweepers in locating and removing the items in the future. The data
will also be analyzed to prioritize potential areas where river
restoration efforts might be made in the future.

| Izaac Walton League of America
Joe
McCue recently delivered an overview of the goals and accomplishments
of FOMR to another great group of conservationists in our local area,
the Izaac Walton League of America. For nearly 100 years, the Izaak
Walton League has fought for clean air
and water, healthy fish and wildlife habitat, and conserving special
places for future generations. Today, the League plays a unique role in
supporting citizens locally and shaping conservation policy nationally. Familiarize yourself with this organization's work! |
| Volunteer Spotlight
Mike Harmon recently completed his tenure on our FOMR Board of Directors. He has been a long-time volunteer in our E.coli monitoring program as well, and you saw his friendly face at many of our public events. We wish you the best, Mike, as you continue to share your talents with our community and we are grateful for your time, help and support over the years!
