Subject: River Alert: Middle River

Dear River Access Program Members,

We have some tricky and dangerous areas to alert you to on Middle River right now, mostly in the upper river Churchville-Franks Mill-Middle River Road area.
  • Near MM 48.9 a lot of wood in the water at Green Hills Road area. You may have to actually get out and scout it to see the problems.
  • Near MM 47.9 there is a big tree stump in the water, it may be runnable, but could be very tricky.
  • Near MM 46 where the Route 250 bridge crosses, there is a small tree down in the main flow of the river which may have become further clogged with debris and cause more blockage
  • Near MM 41 there is a serious strainer--a tree down blocking half the river.
One of our RAP members had an incident on Middle River on June 6th, and lost 3 kayaks near the MM 41 tree strainer. No one was hurt. The kayaks are still missing: a blue kayak, a  purple kayak and a tie-dye blue and green kayak.

If you do paddle this stretch, be careful. And please be on the lookout for the kayaks, and report where they are located as specifically as possible to Kate, 540-609-8267. If you have the ability to get the kayaks onto the shore or tied to something, that would be a bonus!

Be safe!
