Celebrate Earth Day All Month Long!
Moonlight Float Trip

Date: Friday, May 17
Meet: 9:30pm
River: 3 Miles of Middle River
Cost: $10 per person
     (Raindate: Sat., May 18)

This is our popular and enchanting FULL MOON Float trip! Space on this float is quite limited. We will take it slow and easy down the river, listening for night sounds and paddling in only the glow of the moonlight and our glowsticks (provided). We'll be paddling from mile marker 29 to mile marker 26. Come, experience the magic of a night river.

Riverfest
We are seeking volunteers to help at our table at Riverfest--talking river, talking bugs, selling raffle tickets.  Please email Kate to sign up for a table shift: info@friendsofthemiddleriver.org or call 540-609-8267.

Or, perhaps you'd rather volunteer with the Stream Safari?  This activity is with youth who wade in the South River and collect aquatic insects using seine and D-nets, then the insects are exhibited onshore. Please email Darrell for a stream safari shift: schwalmie2@aol.com. More info about Stream Safari HERE.

Or, just come visit! Celebrate two local rivers at once. Many fun scheduled shows and exhibits...plus you can wade the South River at one of the most kid-friendly river events in Virginia!

2019 World Tour Paddling
Film Festival

  • Wednesday, May 1
  • 6-8:15pm: "social hour" to meet local paddling and river groups
  • 8:15-10:30pm: showing of the films
  • Basic City Beer Co, 1010 E Main St, Waynesboro
  • Tickets are $5 and available online or in-person at the Waynesboro Parks and Recreation office

FOMR will be on site to chat with attendees about our upcoming float trips and our River Access Program! Event is hosted by Waynesboro Parks and Rec, Basic City Beer Co., Hops Kitchen and Rockfish Gap Outfitters.

Join in on this year's best paddling films. You'll be inspired to explore rivers, lakes and oceans, push extremes, embrace the paddling lifestyle and appreciate the wild places.

Prior to the films' start some local paddling groups and enthusiasts will be on hand with information about paddling our area. So get there a little early, grab a beer, some dinner, chat it up with local experts, and then kick back and enjoy the films.

If weather permits the films will be shown outdoors. Otherwise the party will be inside. Either way it will be a great time.

Dam Town: Benthic monitoring
Here's a 2 minute video so you can see how much fun can be had doing science while getting in the river and playing with bugs! Thanks, Dam Town monitors--Sarah Grove Jordan, Dustin Staton, Adrie Voors and Kathy Fovargue.
We are proud and happy to have Bobby Whitescarver in our Watershed and in FOMR, and we want to help announce his new book!

Swoop Almanac
Stories of love, land, and water in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley
by Robert Whitescarver

Taste the wine, feel the soil, smell the rain, hear the warblers, see the wonders…join me on these pages to experience the surge of life’s energy in spring, the healing power of trees, and life on the farm with a ninth-generation, pearl-earring-wearing, calf-roping farmer. Restoring streams, wildlife habitat, and soil are core themes that weave through this journal. Thank you for reaching out, spreading the word, and doing your part.
