Subject: FriendsFest is around the corner!

In-Person FriendsFest Resumes!

FriendsFest is the annual Friends of the Middle River’s late summer BBQ picnic where the winning tickets are drawn for the raffle of a new kayak, inflatable stand-up paddle board, and other great prizes. It is a fun-filled afternoon of camaraderie with our families, friends, and Sponsors, celebrating the beauty and privilege of having the wonderful Middle River as a local resource.

We will gather on Sunday afternoon, September 11, at Shirley and Stuart Webster’s beautiful riverfront property, 111 Mill Race Road, Verona, VA 24482. Folks can arrive by boat or car, at 4pm (come an hour earlier if you are bringing items for the Gear Swap). This year, FOMR will provide locally-sourced barbeque, with everyone bringing their own picnic sidedishes, including chairs, utensils, plates and drinks.  Please leave the dogs at home.

If you have not RSVP’s yet, please do so by Wednesday, Aug 31, HERE! We hope you will join us for this fun-filled event!

Education: River Roundup

A great time was had by all again at this year's 2nd annual River Roundup event on July 30th at the Shenandoah Valley Campground. Kids and their parents got to view real river critters, learn about trash, see just how hard a rock is, and paint the beauty of the Middle River with watercolors. There was something for everybody, and our outstanding cadre of volunteers made it all come to life with their dynamic education stations. Many, many thanks to all who volunteered to make this happen, and to Shenandoah Valley Campground for being our partner in this annual event!

Southern Sojourn Paddle Trip

Date:  Saturday, September 17

Time: 11am

Approximate length of trip: approximately 4 hours or 6.9 miles

Rivers: end of Middle River, onto North River, finish at the South Fork of Shenandoah River

Cost: Free

(Backup Raindate: Sunday, September 18 )

We saved the longest for last! Our final group trip of the 2022 paddle season will be about four hours on the river. We will paddle on Middle River, North River and end at the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in Port Republic. We’ll pass through wooded areas and farmland. One’s experience of this stretch is based on water levels. Levels could change, but the water has generally been low this season. Where we start, the river is broad but might require exiting boats and walking them past the strawberry farm. From that point to the confluence with the North River and past is fairly deep and comfortable. There are no significant rapids or cascades until about halfway between Timber Ridge Road and Port Republic. There will be some “rock gardens” to navigate through and again, the challenge depends on the water level.  "This is one of my favorite stretches and is manageable for all levels of experience," says Ben Carr, trip front-runner. "The challenge is more a matter of a boat getting stuck on rocks than of capsizing."

Creek Critters Phone App

Download an app to assist in identifying river bugs for free, courtesy of the Izaac Walton League of America. From their website: "Ready to start monitoring, but not quite ready to take on official training and certification? Creek Critters has got you covered! This app guides you step by step through the process of finding and identifying bugs in your stream.

Perfect for families, public programs, and even as a solo activity, Creek Critters is easy and fun. Collect bugs by following simple step-by-step instructions, and identify your bugs with an interactive identification key.

Once you’ve identified your bugs, Creek Critters does the rest! The app automatically calculates your Stream Health Score based on your findings. The score tells you how healthy your stream is – plus your results are added to the Clean Water Hub, our public database of water quality in America."
