Subject: FOMR: July 2024 News & Updates☀️🐟

July is here and boy, is it hot!

According to the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), we are facing an extreme drought in Augusta County right now. I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say that we are hoping for some good steady rain. Then maybe the water levels will finally rise, and we can all get out on the Middle River to cool down!🤞

Shenandoah Valley Campground River Roundup 2024

Last weekend, we had a great time at our annual River Roundup event at the Shenandoah Valley Campground. Kids and their parents got to paint with watercolors, learn about the care and keeping of the Middle River, and view real live river critters! Thank you to all of our lovely volunteers who worked to make this event a success, and to Shenandoah Valley Campground for being our partner in hosting.

Save the Date: FriendsFest 2024!

Mark your calendars for our annual FriendsFest celebration on September 15th at 4 PM. There will be food, fun, a silent auction, and we will pick winners of our stand-up paddle board & kayak raffle! There's still plenty of time to enter our 2024 raffle -- be sure to get your raffle tickets (if you haven't already) at this link here!

The 2024 FriendsFest Raffle Prizes: A Hyperlite Elevation 10'2" Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board Package & a 10' Yellowfin Vibe Wildfire 100 Kayak with seat & paddle.

You Could Be Our Next Board Member!

FOMR Board Members and Friends enjoyed a cookout along the Middle River for our June 25th Board Meeting.

Volunteering on the Board of Directors is one of many ways to get more involved with leadership at Friends of the Middle River. Every year, one or two of our Board Members complete their terms and rotate off the Board. That's where you could come in -- we are always seeking folks who might be interested in Board service.

Board Member terms are three years. Board terms start January 1st, and our recruitment and interviewing process is June to October. We aim to create a diverse board, with the skills and experience that we need at any given time represented. Remember, there are many ways to provide leadership besides Board Directorship, including volunteering for committee Chair roles.

If you would like to speak to someone about the possibility of Board service, please start by filling out this form. The information you give us will be added to an applicant pool for use in filling future board vacancies. We will then be in touch with you to further the conversation!

Volunteers Needed for Our Annual Cleanup

FOMR's annual river cleanup is on the horizon and we are looking for volunteers available during the months of August and September. Groups and individuals are welcome to sign up to express their interest in participating. Want to be on a team of sweaty and happy river cleaner-uppers? Sign up HERE! We don't have a date yet due to concerns over temperature and low water levels, but we will let you all know as soon as we do!

This is FOMR's largest annual event that often utilizes 75-100 volunteers across various days of the cleanup. It is a rewarding activity where results are measured in numbers of tires and tons of trash no longer residing in our river!

Continuing Group Float Trip Schedule

Our monthly Paddle Trips Program will continue to be held on the second Saturday of each month until September. Participants need their own canoe or kayak and a personal floatation device. This season’s trips are all suitable for novice paddlers. Space is limited. Links for trip details and to register will be on the FOMR website homepage. (Registration for each trip should open at least 2 weeks before the trip.)

July 13 - Stayin' Cool. Registration currently open! Please email info@friendsofthemiddleriver.org with the subject line "July 13 Float Trip" to reserve your spot!

August 10 - Family Fun Trip. Registration will open on 7/26/24.

September 14 - Theme to be determined. Registration will open on 8/30/24.

All trips will have a rain date and are free of charge. If trips fill up quickly, there will be a waitlist.
