The Cameroon component of the "Programme to support the preservation of biodiversity and fragile ecosystems (ECOFAC)" was officially launched on 25 October 2017 in Douala on the sidelines of the 17th Meeting of Parties of the CBFP. For more than 25 years, through the ECOFAC programs, the European Union has been supporting Central Africa’s efforts to preserve its unique biodiversity and manage its forest ecosystems. 
 
 

 During the 17th Meeting of the Parties (MOP) of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) that took place from 24 th to 27 th October 2017 at Sawa Hotel in Douala, Cameroon, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), UNESCO, IUCN, African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and the Congo Basin Institute (CBI), in partnership with the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife (MINFOF), organised a successful side event on the Dja landscape.

Community forestry is a new concept in the Congo Basin. Outside Cameroon, there are currently no community forests in Central Africa. Despite growing interest expressed by national governments, civil society and donors, the potential of community forestry is still widely misunderstood but deserves to be explored.
 

IOn the sidelines of the 17th Meeting of Parties of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership that took place in October 2017 in Douala, the Field Legality Advisory Group held a brainstorming session entitled "How to make independent forest observation a tool for dialogue between the private sector and civil society".
 

In line with the international commitments and policies of Central African States relating to biodiversity conservation and food and nutritional security of people who depend on forest products for their livelihoods, a few Central African countries are taking part in pilot tests aimed at demonstrating the likelihood of participatory management being a viable option towards preserving the functioning, integrity and biodiversity of forest ecosystems in the Congo Basin.
 


In mid-November 2017, the city of Yaoundé hosted a regional conference on illegal logging. The event was supported by the European Union, in the framework of the "Citizens’ Voice for Change: Forest observation in the Congo Basin” Project, an independent forestry observation initiative.
 


Bonn, 15 Nov 2017 The Green Climate Fund signed an Accreditation Master Agreement (AMA) today with German development agency GIZ. This agreement will allow Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to carry out climate finance projects approved by the GCF Board.
 

EU: The EU remains the main and most open market for African food and manufactured products

Africa's exports to the European Union (EU) amounted to more than €116 billion in 2016. Europe is by far Africa's largest export market (35% of Africa's exports), followed by Africa itself (18%), China (11%), the USA (8%) and India (7%).

FODER: Newsletter of the regional workshop on law enforcement and illegal logging in the Congo Basin

From 14 to 16 November 2017, a regional workshop on law enforcement and illegal logging took place in the Congo Basin, in Yaounde. The Workshop was organized by the CIDT within the framework of the Voix des Citoyens project (CV4C), in collaboration with Interpol’s regional office in Yaoundé.  The CV4c project is being implemented in Cameroon by three organizations including FODER.

Since the Green Climate Fund (GCF) first began its resource mobilisation in 2014, when it rapidly raised more than USD 10 billion in pledges, it has allocated USD 2.7 billion into projects and programmes to date.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) 53rd Council wrapped up today after approving a work program of more than $500 million that puts a strong emphasis on support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs).




The flyer is developed for resource mobilisation purposes and outlines current challenges and ways agroforestry/ICRAF can respond to them. Though it is focused on Cameroon, the information in it is also valid for similar areas in Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo, etc.

During the 17th Meeting of the Parties to the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) held in Douala, Cameroon from 24 to 27 October 2017, the R20 regions of Climate Action marked its arrival in the Congo Basin by hosting a side event on 25 October 2017 entitled “R20 regions of Climate Action”: An opportunity to develop the green economy in Central Africa.




On 25 October, a meeting to launch the Cameroon component of the ECOFAC6 Program took place alongside the 17th meeting of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership in Douala. This component which will take up 10 billion CFA francs (12.5 million Euros) of the 40 billion earmarked for Central Africa, aims to step up protection of forest ecosystems notably by providing assistance to the Dja and Faro parks, and the Observatory of Central African Forests". Bonn, Germany (November 11, 2017) — An Adaptation Fund side event during the COP 23 UN Climate Conference in Bonn brought together speakers from Fiji, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Tanzania and the World Food Programme to discuss concrete examples of Fund projects to the most vulnerable communities and applying environmental and social principles that further enhance adaptation actions.

The Center for Social Excellence (CSE) is seeking applications for the 2018 long training course in Social Forestry of the TFT Center for Social Excellence aimed at young African graduates. The course will be conducted simultaneously in French and English.

OFAC is looking for an expert. Deadline for applications: 14th December 2017 at 12h00 Yaounde time. Duration: One year with possibility to renew over 3.5 years. Location: Yaounde-Executive Secretariat of COMIFAC.
CIFOR is looking for a Communication Officer for Central Africa. The Communications Officer will collaborate with CIFOR’s communication teams globally, especially those based at its headquarters in Indonesia. This nationally recruited position will require travel across Central Africa and elsewhere globally.The application deadline is 20 Dec-2017.
 
The Technical Officer’s (TO) role will be to carry out the mission of observation of the Protected Areas carried out by OFAC on behalf of the COMIFAC, under the joint supervision of the Regional Coordinator of the RIOFAC support project to OFAC and the Coordinator of the IUCN Regional program for Protected Areas and Biodiversity. The TO will be IUCN full staff, seconded at OFAC in Yaoundé. She/He will work closely with the Observatory technicians, the JRC regional web developer seconded at OFAC, the IUCN, OFAC, RAPAC and JRC teams on site and abroad.
With the generous support of The 1001: A Nature Trust, the aim of the WWF Prince Bernhard Scholarships is to provide financial support to individuals who wish to pursue short-term professional training or formal studies that will help them contribute more effectively to conservation efforts in their country. Deadline: The deadline for application to this program is January 13, 2018.
