Belgium 16 April 2018. Ghent University, Department of Green Chemistry and Technology and Department of Environment officially joined the members of the Congo Basin Forests Partnership (CBFP). As part of the accession process, Ghent University submitted the required documents and agreed to abide by the CBFP members’ cooperation framework in promoting sustainable management of forest ecosystems in Central Africa.




Congo Basin Sustainable landscapes: around 70 persons took part in this High-Level Roundtable moderated by Cyriaque Sendashonga, Global Director for Programme and Policy at IUCN[1]. The discussions focused on the protection of global important biodiversity in protected areas, the management of biodiversity out of protected areas through large-scale landscape approaches...

 


Civil society representatives from Ghana, Liberia, Cameroon, Congo and Vietnam made the journey to Europe to relate their experiences, successes, challenges and lessons learned from FLEGT and VPAs (Voluntary Partnership Agreements) to curb the trade in illegal logging.
 


 
TIBT and COMIFAC signed a collaboration agreement at the Racewood on June 21, in Libreville (Gabon). On the occasion of the Racewood, a five-year collaboration agreement between ATIBT and the Central African Forests Commission (COMIFAC) was signed, as well as a specific protocol for the collection and valuation of data on the forest sector and forest concessions in Central Africa.
 
 



Wildlife in the Western Congo Basin is rapidly disappearing. The West­ern Congo Basin—WCB, defined here as being composed of Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo—is rap­idly losing a significant proportion of its wild animals to poaching and unsustainable hunting. This trend extends across many species that face pressure from hunting for bushmeat and for commercial export of valuable animal products, as well as habitat degradation.





TRAFFIC International and WWF jointly organized a "Regional Awareness and Capacity Building Workshop Towards FOCAC 2018", which took place in Nairobi, Kenya during 19-20 June 2018. The main purpose of the workshop was to sensitize as well as build the capacity of African countries in their preparation for and engagement in the FOCAC 2018 Ministerial Conference and Heads of States and Governments Summit to be held in Beijing, China in September 2018.

UN Climate Change News, 20 June 2018 - UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa today called on oil producing countries to make the challenging but necessary transition to renewable energy in order to enable a low-carbon future and prevent the worst ravages of climate change, which include ever more severe and frequent droughts, flooding and storms caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases.
 


The Great Green Wall is a symbol of hope in the face of one of the biggest challenges of our time
– desertification.  Launched in 2007, this game-changing initiative aims to restore Africa’s degraded landscapes and in the process transform millions of lives in one of the world’s poorest regions, the Sahel. Once complete, the Wall will be the largest living structure on the planet – an 8000km natural wonder of the world stretching across the entire width of the Continent.



The United Nations Forum on Forests, concluding its thirteenth session this afternoon, adopted an omnibus resolution regarding the activities it will carry out to support the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests (2017-2030). The aim is to implement a communication and outreach strategy, to raise public awareness of the Plan.

UN Climate Change News, 3 July 2018 - Increased risk from vulnerability to climate change is increasing the cost of capital and is projected to cause an additional USD 168 billion of debt payments over the next ten years among the most climate change vulnerable countries, according to new research commissioned by the UN.
 


The high-level side event aims to showcase the COMIFAC member countries’ efforts to foster conservation, management and sustainable development of forest ecosystems in Central Africa with a view to enhancing the visibility of Central Africa’s innovative achievements in implementing United Nations conventions on the Environment.




UN Climate Change News, 27 June 2018 — Political leaders from all regions are multiplying their public calls for nations to step up immediate climate action and to conclude robust guidelines to implement the Paris Climate Change Agreement at the next UN climate talks in Poland in December.




Since its entry into force in 1994, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has been at the centre of international efforts to address global warming and the rising risks it represents to people and economies across the globe. The adoption and early entry into force of the Paris Agreement was a monumental achievement that has put every nation on Earth on a clear pathway and with a clear destination for delivering a safer and more secure future.
 



Proposals for oral presentations, sessions and posters should explicitly refer to at least one of the ten following selected conference sub-themes: 1) Nature conservation policies; 2) Forest and climate change; 3) Political economy of deforestation; 4) Forestlands and agricultural commodities; 5) Biodiversity and market-based instruments; 6) Transnational and decentralised forest governance; 7) Development, social equity and sustainability; 8) Forest concessions; 9) Ecotourism and forest recreation; 10) livelihoods and Non-timber forest products.

I am pleased to annonce the official launch of the inception phase of the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWiM) project in Congo, which is funded by the European Union and implemented by a consortium including FAO, CIRAD, CIFOR and WCS. This project plans to develop a replicable model of sustainable community management of hunting activities in forestry concessions.

From December 2017 to May 2018, Cameroonian civil society member organizations of the Coordination of the Standardized of Independent External Observation System (SNOIE), conducted a total of five independent external observation missions to report alleged cases of illegal logging in forests of the national domain and those covered by legally assigned titles.

Collaboration and partnerships between governments, global institutions, non-governmental and local organizations, as well as the private sector are key to moving forward on climate action. The 11th Forest Governance Forum will be held from 30- 31 October 2018 in Brazzaville. It is the first forum to be held under the EU-funded CV4C project.


It’s a first! Last Friday and Saturday was organized by Maisons du Monde Foundation a public event around the preservation of forests, climate and biodiversity in Nantes.




On 21 and 22 June, the ATIBT organized the Racewood in Libreville, as part of Gabon WoodShow, the first timber fair in the Congo Basin. ATIBT has decided to take advantage of the launch this year of Gabon WoodShow, Gabon’s first wood and technology show in Gabon, to join the event and hold a new edition of the Racewood.

As part of the implementation of its road map, the Central African Sub- Working Group on Protected Areas and Wildlife (SGTAPFS) held its eighth meeting from 29 to 30 May 2018 in Douala in the Republic of Cameroon.
