Yaoundé, Cameroon, January 13, 2021 - The Central African Forest Commission (Comifac), a joint body of the countries of the sub-region responsible for coordinating actions for the conservation and sustainable management of forest ecosystems, announces the accession of the Republic of Angola to the institution as its eleventh member state. On October 20, President João Lourenço, after a vote in the Angolan National Assembly, signed the letter of accession of his country.


 
The meeting between the two illustrious personalities was held on Monday, January 24, 2022, at the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife of Cameroon and focused on:Decoding COP 26 - Next steps, MoP: a) COMIFAC's assumption of the co-chairmanship of the MoP: MoP date, theme and structure; b) MoP invitation letter for COMIFAC ministers by COMIFAC chair; c) MoP invitation letter by COMIFAC current chair to ministers; Next CBFP facilitation. ..



 
 
On Tuesday, January 25, 2022, between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., a consultation was held at the Hotel La Falaise in Yaoundé between partners in the forestry and environment sector in Cameroon. Organized by KfW on the occasion of the mission of the CBFP Facilitator of the Federal Republic of Germany, Honorable Dr. Christian Ruck in Yaounde, this meeting was the relaunch of the Consultation Circle of MINFOF and MINEPDED Partners (CCPM).




On 14 December 2021, H.E. Dr. Déo-Guide RUREMA, Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock of Burundi, presided over the official handover ceremony of COVID-19 control equipment to Health Centres located in the vicinity of the national and transboundary protected areas, to COMIFAC National Coordination of Burundi and to civil society organisations.



 
The European Union was about to get rid of its main tool in the fight against illegal logging. However, civil society organizations from all over the world have protested to change the situation. Few months ago, the European Union (EU) seemed determined to abandon what constitutes its most innovative and ambitious initiative in the fight against illegal logging on a global scale.

According to an article in Le Nouveau Gabon, wood production has doubled in the last 10 years to reach 3.7 million m3 in 2021. Over the past nine years, timber production has doubled in Gabon. According to data from the French Treasury, it has risen from 1.9 million m3 in 2012 to nearly 3.7 million in 2021.



Mbalmayo, Cameroon, January 17-19, 2022- The COMIFAC Executive Secretariat held a face-to-face and video technical workshop to finalize its 2022 Annual Budgeted Work Plan. The objectives of this workshop were as follows: (i) to present the status of implementation of the 2021 AWP of the COMIFAC Executive Secretariat (ii) to consolidate the actions to be carried out in 2022 by the COMIFAC Executive Secretariat with the support of stakeholders (iii) to identify possible areas of synergies with the actions of the AWP and the contributions of technical and financial partners.

On 20 October 2021, a ceremony was held in Ndjamena, Chad, to handover health equipment to strengthen the technical platform for the care and preservation of COVID-19 in the surrounding areas of SENA-OURA border park. COMIFAC, supported by the German Technical Cooperation through GIZ Regional Support Project for COMIFAC, has through this action affirmed its willingness to accompany member states in their conservation efforts.
 
Only ten days after the holding of the 20th ordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government held in Brazzaville on January 19, 2022, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo HEM. Félix Antoine Tshisékédi Tshilombo succeeded his counterpart and brother HEM. Denis Sassou N'guésso as the current president of ECCAS for a one-year term.



The sub-regional workshop to decipher the results of the 26th Conference of Parties (CoP) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), was held in Kigali, in the Republic of Rwanda from January 25 to 27, 2022. It was organized by the Executive Secretariat of the Central African Forests Commission (COMIFAC) with the support of the Strengthening and Institutionalizing of the Central African Forests Observatory (RIOFAC) Project.


 
Mr. Paulo GOMES, President of the ORANGO Investment Corporation, economist, financier and committed ecologist of pan-African and international reputation was received in audience this Tuesday, January 18, 2022 by the Minister of the Environment, Sustainable Development and the Congo Basin, Mrs. Arlette SUDAN-NONAULT, within the framework of the mobilization of funds for the financing of the Blue Fund investment plan of the Congo Basin in the presence of Mr. Nicaise Mouloumbi vice-president of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council of Gabon.


 
Libreville (Gabonese Republic), January 29, 2022 - The new headquarters of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) was the setting for the exchange meeting initiated by the President of the ECCAS Commission, His Excellency Gilberto Da Piédade Verissimo, and the ambassadors of friendly countries and the technical and financial partners of ECCAS.


 
On November 2, a group of 12 donors, including the European Commission, the United Kingdom, the United States and the Bezos Earth Fund, collectively pledged at least $1.5 billion in funding for the protection and sustainable management of Congo Basin forests over the next four years. This pledge is part of a larger $12 billion commitment made at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland by 100 leaders to halt and reverse deforestation and land degradation by 2030, and it received a mixed reception from experts in the region.

 
COMIFAC is gathering its experts and focal points of the Convention on Biological Diversity and its additional protocols to host the 33rd meeting of the Central African Biodiversity Working Group (GTBAC 33). The Executive Secretariat of COMIFAC is organising the thirty-third meeting of GTBAC (GTBAC-33) from 14 to 18 February 2021. This meeting, chaired by the Executive Secretary of COMIFAC, began with opening remarks by the GTBAC Leader, the Director of the GIZ Regional Project in support of COMIFAC and the Co-facilitator of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership.
When in 2010 the world's governments pledged to increase protected area coverage to 17% of the world's land surface, several Central African countries had already set aside 25% of their northern savannas for conservation. To evaluate the effectiveness of this commitment, we analyzed the results of 68 multispecies surveys conducted in the 7 main savanna national parks in Central Africa (1960-2017).

Over 400 youth-led or youth-serving organizations make up the UN MGCY, a dedicated space for children and youth in the UN to address issues ranging from the environment and human rights to peace and security. Those MGCY organizations that share a focus on the environment and sustainable development can receive UNEP accreditation and engage through the MGCY to UNEP.



In the last decade, the off-grid solar industry has become a key solution to quickly deliver clean energy access to low-income and hard-to-reach communities. It currently serves 420 million people and has helped mitigate over 150 million metric tonnes of CO2e (according to GOGLA estimates), while enabling remote and vulnerable populations to adapt and become more resilient to climate change.

Polar regions attract increasing public interest and attention with respect to climate change, mainly because of the visible effects. Climate-induced changes, such as ice melting, are regularly reported in the media, sometimes accompanied by important information on the significance of the frozen world for the global climate and human socioeconomic development. Environmental changes in the Arctic and the Antarctic are accelerating, affecting local species and ecosystems, and impacting the broader climate and ecological systems far beyond the polar regions.


Assessing the value of secondary forests in Peru is vital for designing policies that recognize the benefits they contribute to sustainable ecosystem management efforts and restoring tree cover in a cost-effective manner, while including livelihood benefits and climate mitigation. Defined as natural forest regrowth after clearance, secondary forests are estimated to make up 13.3 percent of forest cover in the Peruvian Amazon. They provide 63 percent of forest cover in Southeast Asia, and 34 percent across the lowland Neotropics.

The fifteenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 15) was originally expected to take place in the final quarter of 2021. Due to the global pandemic, the Bureau decided to reschedule it to take place between May and October 2022.


We relay below the press release from Bureau Veritas announcing this first training session. We inform you of the imminent holding from March 28 to April 1, 2022 of the first training session for auditors on the PAFC Congo Basin certification scheme in the sub-region. The organization of this training is the result of the collaboration between Bureau Veritas and the organizations that are PEFC International, PAFC Congo Basin, ATIBT and PPECF.

The Timber Trade Federation is changing its name to Timber Development UK.

During the official opening of the ECOFAC6 Regional Programme’s Steering Committee, (organized in Douala, Cameroon from 4 to 6 May) EU Ambassador, Ms. Rosario Bento-Pais, recalled that the EU invests more than 80 million Euros in the ECOFAC6 Programme. The other 17 million are invested by the partners. Amounting to approximately 100 million Euros, the investment makes ECOFAC6 the largest European environmental programme in Central Africa and a one-of-the-kind initiative in the world.



We, the Heads of State and Government of the Member States of the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) met on 17–18 February 2022 under the Co-Chairpersonship of H.E. Mr. Charles Michel, President of the European Council and H.E. Mr. Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal and Chairperson of the African Union. Countries are increasingly using their NAP processes to realize gender-responsive climate action and act on the Gender Action Plan (GAP) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

2022 will be a significant year for governing the 2030 Agenda and other global frameworks on protecting the environment. While 2020 was anticipated as a super year for nature, and 2021 was considered all the more crucial for biodiversity after the pandemic froze many global discussions, 2022 now holds the cumulative need for high-level negotiations driven by renewed political will to adequately tackle environmental issues. It also inches the world closer to key deadlines for human and planetary wellbeing.


A TRAFFIC report highlights threatened species are still commercially traded in open bushmeat markets despite legal protection in Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo. The report suggests that less protected animal substitutes may be at risk of overexploitation in the future as a result.


It can be difficult to make the case for climate adaptation planning in contexts defined by fragility and violence. However, a failure to integrate climate adaptation considerations into peacebuilding plans and post-conflict development agendas can undermine the long-term viability of both. The Adaptation Fund has launched a new USD 10 million pilot small grants programme (Adaptation Fund Climate Innovation Accelerator, AFCIA) to foster innovation in adaptation in developing countries at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP25) in Madrid. Two of the Adaptation Fund’s accredited Multilateral Implementing Entities (MIEs), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), have been selected as implementing entities of the AFCIA.


The first trainings of the actors of the sector for the year 2022 took place in Gabon from January 12 to 28 with the full satisfaction of the beneficiaries and the government authorities. The two training sessions aimed at providing forestry and wood industry actors with the capacity to better understand the upcoming forestry resource exploitation contexts ended in Gabon on January 28.

Rwanda is set to host the regional headquarters of Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) following a presidential order signed by President Paul Kagame and issued in the national gazette. Founded in 1895, Wildlife Conservation Society is an NGO with headquarters in New York with the aim to conserve the world's largest wildlife and wild places in 14 priority regions home to more than 50 percent of the world's biodiversity.


A visit from World Forest ID to the ATIBT gave us an insight into this interesting approach. Tackling global deforestation and degradation requires that the actors involved in global supply chains have the means to accurately verify the identity and geographic source of both timber and deforestation-related agricultural commodities.

In December 2021, the consortium formed by Eticwood and Nature+, both members of ATIBT, was selected for the Technical Coordination of the AFD EU FLEGT Program. Presentation of the Program. This program focuses on eight priority countries (Cameroon, Congo, Ghana, Guyana, Honduras, Liberia, Central African Republic and Vietnam) and will last for a period of 4 years (2022-2025). The main objective of the Program is to contribute to sustainable forest management, with 3 sub-objectives: operationalization of the VPA, capacity building of civil society organizations, and support to the private sector in the implementation of the VPA.


The Ocean is of vital importance to current and future generations. There is only one Ocean. Every State, every economic player, every community of people and every individual has a responsibility to conserve it and to use it sustainably. We, Heads of State and Government and the European Union, are deeply concerned about the continued degradation of the Ocean from human activities escalating the devastating effects of the climate change and biodiversity crises.

For decades, Fern and partners have campaigned to strengthen the rights of forest peoples and protect and restore forests. There have been locust years, when things went backwards, and harvest years, when plans come to fruition. Gratifyingly, 2021 was a year in which the forest movement achieved outstanding successes and we enter 2022 energised and ready to defend and build on them.

She succeeds Olman Serrano, whose term of office was coming to an end. On the same day, an extraordinary general assembly allowed for certain modifications to be made to the statutes of our association. The new statutes will soon be available on the ATIBT website.
