Belgium, a member of the partnership since the initiative was launched in 2002, has just announced that it will be taking over the facilitation of the initiative for the next two years (2018- 2019). Mr. François-Xavier de Donnea, an Honorary Member of Parliament and Minister of State of the Kingdom of Belgium, will act as CBFP Facilitator during these two years.
 

 

Belgium has agreed to resume the Facilitation of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) for the period 2018-2019. Belgium will thus be taking over from the European Commission, which did an outstanding job of establishing a structure which has enhanced CBFP governance, which the Belgian Facilitation can now build on.

 


Main conclusions of the extraordinary Council of COMIFAC Ministers

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.

 

We compared village sales and trade chains between 2002-2003 and 2014. Hunters reported pangolins to be the most frequently requested species in 2014, and the value of pangolins had increased at every point along their trade chain. In Libreville, giant pangolin prices increased 211% and arboreal pangolin prices 73% whilst inflation rose only 4.6% over the same period.
 



In a bid to help Gabon’s participatory forestry sector reach its full potential, the Ministry of Forestry and the Environment has conducted a study to review participatory forestry with the technical assistance of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO’s framework for assessing the extent and effectiveness of Participatory Forestry was used to conduct the study. A validation workshop on the study was held from 21 to 22 February 2018.
 


Pangolins are burrowing animals with overlapping scales; conical heads; and long, sticky tongues that enable them to eat mostly ants and termites. Nocturnal and secretive, they have been difficult for scientists to study in the wild. They’ve also become the most trafficked wild mammals in the world, according to the Zoological Society of London.
 


Brazzaville, 23 March 2018 – In an unprecedented move to protect the Cuvette Centrale region in the Congo Basin, the world’s largest tropical peatlands, from unregulated land use and prevent its drainage and degradation, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Republic of Congo and Indonesia jointly signed the Brazzaville declaration that promotes better management and conservation of this globally important carbon store.





14 March 2018 Participants at the International Conference on Forestry Training: Addressing the Challenges of Training for Sustainably Managing the Congo Basin Forests, which ended on 7 March 2018, have called on ITTO and the international community to provide ongoing technical and financial support to improve facilities, equipment, materials, training and capacity building for forestry training in the Congo Basin subregion.

Songdo, 26 Feb 2018 The Green Climate Fund (GCF) Board has today appointed two new Co-Chairs at its nineteenth meeting in Songdo, Republic of Korea. Paul Oquist has been elected as the developing country Co-Chair, whilst Lennart Båge is the developed country Co-Chair. They replace the outgoing Co-Chairs, Ayman M. Shasly (Developing Countries) and Ewen McDonald (Developed Countries).



This global celebration of forests provides a platform to raise awareness of the importance of all types of woodlands and trees, and celebrate the ways in which they sustain and protect us.

This Toolkit has been created to support the ‘Community of Practice’ working on changing behaviour to reduce consumer demand for illegal wildlife products. It brings together a wide range of best practice evidence, latest research findings and other resources from the field of consumer behaviour change, based on experience from the conservation sector and beyond.


Peatlands take up only 3% of the earth’s surface yet they store almost 550 billion tons of carbon, twice as much as all the world’s forests together. Peatlands are potentially one of the most effective tools for combating climate change. By preserving and restoring the world’s peatlands, we can reduce CO2 emissions and revive a fundamental ecosystem that delivers several benefits, including their role as natural carbon sinks.

Songdo, 01 Mar 2018 The first Green Climate Fund (GCF) Board meeting of 2018 concluded today after approving 23 projects, valued together at USD 1,093.5 million of GCF funding. The new approvals bring the GCF portfolio to a total of 76 projects and programmes, amounting to USD 3,730.2 million in GCF funding to assist developing countries in their low emission and climate resilient development.

This study analyses the correlation between forest governance and deforestation and aims to improve national understanding of the challenges involved in land-use governance. The 20-member group of experts from civil society, the financial sector and academia, established by the European Commission in December 2016, has released a series of recommendations setting out a comprehensive strategy on sustainable finance in the European Union.
