The International Conference of Ministers of defense, security and protected areas on the fight against poaching and other cross-border criminal activities, held from 23 to 25 January 2019, N'Djamena, Chad, was a resounding success (success story): "Off to a flying start!!! ": Fruitful meeting between the Sahel and northern Equatorial Africa...

The Brussels meeting, one of the activities of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership, was a time for discussion, forecasts, analysis, soul searching, but also an opportunity for advocacy on the part of various partners who believe in the future of the Congo Basin forests, the world’s second ecological lung, after the Amazon.

 



TUnited Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, following consultations with the Bureau of the Conference of the Parties to UNCCD announced the appointment of Ibrahim Thiaw of Mauritania as the next Executive Secretary of the UNCCD.

 

Douala- Cameroon, 04 February 2019- The 5thand last session of the decision-making committee of the GIZ regional project to support the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC) funded by the German Ministry of Cooperation (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) took place on 04 February 2019 in the meeting room of the Prince de Galles Hotel.


 



On 31 January 2019, the Prince de Galles hotel in Douala, Cameroon, hosted a Workshop to present the results achieved by project on fostering the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and climate change measures in COMIFAC countries. The meeting was held under the aegis of the Executive Secretariat of COMIFAC and the Japanese Cooperation (JICA).

 



The Ministry for Agriculture, Forests and the Environment, together with the United Nations Organisation for Food and Agriculture (FAO), opened on Thursday 7th February an institutional event at Hotel Anda China, regarding a reaffirmation against climate change and the promotion of green development. They also launched three new projects.
 


We reviewed current experiences in the Eastern province of the DRC and found that nobody has carried out an estimation of the financial returns of the business models they drew up for/with the communities involved. We therefore conducted a financial feasibility analysis for two case studies, estimating the costs of developing/ implementing activities and the benefits expected for the communities within the next five years.
 


This briefing shows that to ensure long-term benefits for people and forests it is imperative that community forests are grounded in traditional land tenure and forest management systems, as opposed to being driven by outsiders. The briefing also stresses the important role that community mapping can play in this process when it is truly participatory.
 


The Intergovernmental Meeting on the Sixth Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-6) opened on Monday, 21 January 2019, at the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. In the morning, delegates listened to opening statements, elected officers for the meeting, and adopted the meeting agenda. For the rest of the day, countries shared their general views on the draft Summary for Policymakers (SPM). Starting Tuesday, delegates will begin a line-by-line review of the draft SPM and make specific suggestions for changes.

The Interim Strategic Plan (2019-2022) of the Organization for Wildlife Conservation in Africa (OCFSA), which supplements the Illustrated Briefing Note we recently developed in consultation with stakeholders and key stakeholders in wildlife conservation, capture what the intergovernmental agency must do in the next four years.

February 14, 2019 The President of Suriname declared the adoption of the document known as the “Krutu of Paramaribo Joint Declaration”. This followed two days of presentations and appeals from delegations representing international organizations, civil society groups both local to Suriname and international, and official delegations of HFLD nations and other nations concerned for the protection of forests.



The seventeenth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 17) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), will be held at the Arthur Chung Conference Center (ACCC) from 28 to 30 January 2019 in Georgetown, Guyana.

With just over a week to go until World Pangolin Day 2019 we've been promoting the "green collection" in China which looks to provide sustainable alternatives to traditional wildlife products.
 



On Wednesday, 28 November 2018, 23 participants attending the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) Meeting in Brussels, Belgium, gathered to discuss priorities, gaps, and opportunities for wildlife  conservation capacity in the region. Organizations were invited to discuss what they support and why.
 



Excellent results were demonstrated from an innovative Visa platform and partnership with UNFCCC, where nearly 20,000 taps (19,723) resulted in US$ 67,453 generated for the Adaptation Fund during the COP 24 climate change conference in Katowice, Poland to support the Fund’s mission in helping vulnerable communities in developing countries adapt to climate change.

Harrison is a Kenyan Citizen and has a background in forestry, environment and natural resource management. He studied forestry at the Universities of Nairobi, Helsinki and British Columbia. After graduating from the University of British Columbia in 1989, he had a 5-year stint as an academic at Moi University in Kenya.
 


The first substantive session of the Ad hoc Open-ended Working Group towards a Global Pact for the Environment convened on Monday, 14 January 2019 at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. During the week-long session, delegates considered the report of the United Nations Secretary-General titled “Gaps in international environmental law and environment related instruments: towards a global pact for the environment” (A/73/419).

When Tabi Joda of GreenAid returned from university to the rural Cameroon villages he knew as a child, he found some of them totally abandoned because the land had become too degraded to support villagers’ livelihoods. He was horrified and asked himself, “Why did I go to university, if not to make a difference?”




The DSA's annual conference in 2019 will take place at the Open University, which celebrates its 50th birthday that year. The conference will focus centrally on "Opening up Development", while also encompassing the broad range of development studies interests. As with DSA2018, we will have sessions for early career scholars - including on publishing and an ECR plenary; as well as assisting participants from the Global South to attend.

Central African Forests Forever, first published in 2017, takes readers to the heart of the continent, introducing them to the people and wildlife of this region.
Its author, independent communications consultant Meindert Brouwer, says the book also functions as a tool for sharing information about efforts to address poverty and environmental issues in the region. Mongabay spoke with Brouwer to learn more about his motivations and the reception of his work in Central Africa.




The German government has called for European “binding regulations” to set a standard for sustainably-produced cocoa.  The call was made as part of a national 10-point Action Plan for cocoa, launched on 23 January by German Agriculture Minister Julia Kloeckner and Development Minister Gerd Mueller.



For two weeks, the conference has brought together thousands of climate action decision-makers, advocates and activists, with one key objective: adopting global guidelines for the 197 parties of the 2015 Paris Agreement, when countries committed to limiting global warming to less than 2°C – and as close as possible to 1.5° – above pre-industrial levels.
