What Came First - The Kitten or the Cat?

Spoiler Alert - Neither... It was the Email!

The most common question we hear from adopters is "where did kitty come from?" When FFGW was founded 30 years ago, the answer was "strays off of the street." In 1995, even though in municipal shelters euthanasia rates were high, most shelters would not work with a rescue. There has been a huge shift in three decades, where rescues have built a foundation of trust with shelters, and the rescue community has worked in tandem with those shelters to move toward a no-kill goal.  The save rate for homeless dogs and cats in Virginia’s shelters last year was 86% – just 4% shy of the nationally-recognized no-kill benchmark of 90%, and FFGW is proud to have played a part in that number, working with several area open-admission shelters. In particular, many of the cats we rescue come from a small, rural shelter in downstate Virginia – a shelter that euthanizes all animals every week  - and would have an extremely low live release rate were it not for cooperation with Northern Virginia rescues. FFGW has partnered with a rescue downstate, who goes into that shelter every week, and works with several Northern Virginia rescues to remove as many animals as possible and transport them first to Charlottesville, where another rescue meets the transport, and brings them to Chantilly.

And so - it begins with an email, from our rescue partner:

Hi, everyone - we have an urgent situation at the shelter, and all kitties will be at risk tomorrow.  Is there any way you can help us?  Full list of kitties below - our apologies for the short bios as we try to get this out quickly. Transport will be tomorrow.

Thank you for your help -

      The Happy Tails Team

Pansy is sweet as can be, with a delightful chirp hello and a calm, friendly demeanor. She gave us lot of gentle head bumps to ask for affection and had no problem with us handling her kittens. The kittens are still nursing but exploring solids as well; all are pretty chubby and playful. And the tortie kitten has the most adorable floppy ears! The entire litter appears overall healthy with no known issues. Pansy and her bubs came to the shelter as strays.

When a cat - or a mom and a whole litter of kittens - comes in on that transport designated for FFGW, they are picked up by an FFGW volunteer and taken to one of our partner vets, where the kitties are given a thorough exam and any medical needs are assessed. You may recall in our May Newsletter where we talked about FFGW's vision - that FFGW treats cats rescued as "owned " cats - meaning that they receive the same medical care as if they were already in a forever home.

They're tested for various diseases, dewormed, treated for fleas, given any necessary vaccines, and if needed scheduled for spay/neuter surgery where they'll also receive a microchip. From the vet, they then go to a foster home.

FFGW is primarily a foster-based rescue, and although we're fortunate to have space at Just Cats Boarding Center in Reston, where we hold adoption events and showcase a few cats during the week, the level of care and attention we give to our rescues is best achieved in a foster home, where we can get a thorough idea of the purrsonalities of the kitties we've rescued - to better match them with forever homes - and to attend to their socialization and medical needs. That's especially important with moms and litters of kittens too young to be available for adoption. A loving foster home is essential for a young lady like Pansy, and her nursing little jelly beans.

FFGW is fortunate to have fantastic fosters - but we simply do not have enough homes to answer all of the desperate pleas in that weekly email. These emails make us feel either very happy - because we have not only funds to support the care of an entire litter, but importantly foster space to give them a safe place to land - or... very sad, because we have nowhere for them to go.

If you've ever thought about fostering - we really need you now! If you're casting about for some way for your teen to fufill those volunteer hours - fostering a feline family would provide lots of hours (and fun!) Learn more and fill out a foster application HERE!

Look how relaxed mom and kittens are after just one day in a foster home!

I Hate Kittens!

"I hate Kittens," she said. My blank look of disbelief must have been obvious, because she repeated it again - "I hate kittens." My disbelief was partly because, well, how can you not like an eight week old little baby kitten - indeed, I was holding the world's cutest kitten, sound asleep in my arms right at that moment - and the words came from a respected rescuer, the head of a very successful cat rescue that places hundreds of cats every year. How CAN you not like - no, hate - kittens?

It was hard to believe, that someone so active in the rescue community would not like kittens. Maybe I'd heard wrong?  But, everyone loves kittens, I mumbled, looking down at the sleeping ball of fluff I was holding.

"I hate kittens," she explained, "because it means that no adult is going to get a home until the fall. No one will adopt a grown cat, when there are all of these kittens around."

There are a lot of reasons to adopt an adult cat, in fact.  Click on Mu's photo to see just 10 excellent  reasons why grownups are great:
