Back to School!

Technically, it's still summer for a few more weeks, but despite the 90° temps it's "meteorological fall" or "academic fall"... and now that the ~~kitties~~ kiddies are back in school ... and you're back from the beach... it's time to get serious about homework... and that community service requirement. Back-to-school often means community service requirements for school, church, scouting, or other organizations. If you’re looking for a fun way to earn volunteer hours, look no further than FFGW. Our mission is to provide safe foster environments for cats until they find permanent homes. But we know not everyone can adopt or foster, so we offer a variety of lower-commitment ways to help and they involve fluffy kittens!

Volunteer Questionnaire

Be a Cat Caretaker

One of the easiest—and most fun—ways to volunteer is to spend time with our cats. Gentle interaction and play help cats, especially shy ones, build confidence and positive relationships with people.

When cats aren’t in foster homes, we partner with Just Cats Clinic in Reston, VA, for temporary housing. Volunteer caretakers of all ages can visit and play with the cats. Visiting hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-7:00 PM. A parent or guardian must accompany children under 18. Fill out the Volunteer Questionnaire and we will be in contact about a brief training session and scheduling.

Teens: Earn service hours while building leadership and teamwork skills.

Volunteering is a fantastic way to gain communication, teamwork, leadership, and practical experience—it’s also a great way to beef up your college applications. Teens' volunteer activities include socializing cats, cleaning cages, organizing supplies, and feeding cats. Teens can also put their creative and communication skills to work through photography, social media, promotional projects, donation drives, and research projects focused on cat advocacy and the importance of fostering.

Projects may qualify for service hours, subject to school approval.

Younger kids: Learn through hands-on, loving care. Spending time with cats teaches patience, responsibility, and compassion. It also helps parents assess if their child is ready to adopt a cat. Kids can play with, brush, and talk to cats.

One of the simplest ways to socialize rescue cats is talking to them so they get used to hearing kind voices. A win-win for kids and cats is reading aloud to cats. Kids can increase their literacy skills, build confidence, and become adept at reading aloud with a purr-friendly audience that is always ready to listen.

Families: Turn time together into something meaningful. Family volunteering allows parents to model kindness and community service while creating memorable experiences. For families ready for a bigger commitment, fostering provides the joy of caring for a cat at home while helping prepare that cat for adoption.

Fostering means more hours. If you foster a cat or litter of kittens, and your student tracks the time spent socializing, feeding, and cleaning up after the cat (scooping those litter boxes!), our FFGW Volunteer Coordinator will be happy to sign off on those hours. Fostering can look different for every cat and every family. It might mean giving a cat a quiet break for a week or two from the cats and kittens residing at the Just Cats Boarding Center, providing a safe place for a night or two when cats come in from shelters after vet hours, or opening your home for as long as it takes for the cat or kittens adopted.

The 2027 Fabulous Feline Calendar Contest Ends This Wednesday Sept. 15th!

The most important thing you can do to increase donations to your entry is to remind people that every vote is a donation to the non-profit Feline Foundation of Greater Washington. We rely completely on donations from our community to allow us to provide necessary vetting care for cats that we rescue. The cats benefit directly.
