Tips On How to Write an Effective Essay
Writing essays can be tedious at times but it's important to remember that all the struggles are worth it in the long run. Essays have the potential to open a lot of doors for you, especially if you're a good writer. Below are some tips and resources to help you're writing become even better.
George Orwell's rules for writing could be beneficial to you. The rules are as follows:
  1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
  2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.
  3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
  4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.
  5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English Equivalent.
  6. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

Taken together, then, the overall structure of a five paragraph essay should look something like this:

  • Supporting details or examples
  • An explanation of how this example proves your thesis
Second Body Paragraph

  • Supporting details or examples
  • An explanation of how this example proves your thesis
Third Body Paragraph
