Applying for Financial Aid: Things You Should Know

What is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)?
FAFSA is a form used to determine eligibility for federal financial aid for pursuing post secondary education.This financial assistance includes but is not limited to scholarships, grants, work-study, and loans.
Why should you apply? Choosing to apply for FAFSA allows a student an opportunity to potentially receive financial assistance for school from the federal and state government.Additionally, FAFSA is a noted prerequisite for the Parent PLUS and unsubsidized Stafford loans; these loans are not based on financial need. 
Things to Note
  • Parental information is REQUIRED unless you are at least 24 years of age or an independent student as defined by FAFSA
  • Reporting income and assets are REQUIREDfor yourself and for your parents (if you are a dependent) or your spouse (if you are married) 
  • You must report income records for the prior academic year
  • Only parents WITHOUT a Social Security Number can enter 000-00-0000 on the FAFSA

If you plan to attend college from:
  • July 1, 2018-June 30,2019
You will submit the FAFSA: 
  • 2018-19
You can submit the FAFSA from:
  • October 1, 2017-June 30, 2019
Usinng income and tax information from: 
  • 2016
APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID AS EARLY AS OCTOBER 1, 2017!!
What information is needed to apply?
  • Client Registration Number (for non U.S. citizens)
  • Social Security Number
  • Records of income (i.e. earned from employment, child support, untaxed income, etc.)
  • Information about assets (savings, stocks, bonds, certificated of deposit, investments, college savings programs, etc)
  • Driver's License Number 
  • Date of Birth
  • Martial Status (dates of changes in marital status, if any)
