Subject: Between Defeat and Victory

Dear Families,

Many Christians are familiar with the Biblical account of Joshua leading the nation of Israel across the Jordan River and into the Promised Land. Of all the experiences Joshua had in the Promised Land, which one was the most significant?

Was it the battle of Jericho, which was his first victory? Was it the miraculous battle when, in answer to Joshua’s prayer, the Lord caused the sun to stand still in the valley of Ajalon? Or was it earlier than both of these victories when Joshua had that special encounter with the Captain of the LORD’s army?

In this January Message of the Month, John Huffman suggests that the most significant event for Joshua and God's people happened—prior to all of those unique encounters—at a most unremarkable location: Gilgal, the place where Israel first camped in the Promised Land.

Like many times in our own lives, God asks from us things we do not understand, nor do we often want to follow in obedience to His Word. Our excuses are many and our view is limited by our sight, but God wants us to have faith and trust Him when we do not see the way His command fits our thinking.

Between defeat and victory, God gave Joshua a command that ran contrary to all military wisdom. As he obeyed God’s command, Joshua and the Israelites learned three crucial lessons. These lessons set the stage for the victories that would come later in Joshua’s life and for the children of God. As we listen to this message, may we also hear, trust, and obey the Lord and His commands, in order to find similar victories and blessing for ourselves and our families.

We trust that this message, “Joshua at Gilgal: Where the Reproach Was Rolled Away,” will encourage you to follow God, even when you find yourself facing life’s uncertainties.

In Christ,
