Consequences - Jennifer Woodley

‘Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him, “You are not also one of disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” John 18: 25 (NRSV)

When we become a disciple of Christ, when we say yes to the invitation to follow him, we are also saying yes to the consequences of that decision. Whatever they may be. Peter denied Jesus three times, not because he didn’t love his Lord, but because he was fearful of where that love may take him. Would it mean his own death as well? Would it result in a beating in the same way the soldiers had brutally battered Jesus? Peter was not willing to go there.

This was a love that may cost too much. Too much for the disciple to bear. Instead, Peter backed down and recanted on his confession to even know Jesus. Every love comes at a price. The deeper the love, the greater that price. How great was Jesus’ love for us, that he paid the highest price of all.

Like Peter, are we fearful of the consequences of confessing our faith? Ask God for boldness and strength. Or like Jesus, are we ready to carry our cross, unashamed of the gospel and eager to confess our commitment to our Savior. Thank God for his Spirit who empowers us with the courage and strength to steadfastly face the consequences of loving our Lord.

Heavenly Father, I want to be found growing in my love for you, despite the consequences. Help me to face whatever hardship lays ahead and remain faithfully committed to you always. Amen

TITLE: COME AND DINE
By Mariane Holbrook

When Daddy made a promise, he stuck to it. You could bet your last cent on it.

So, when Daddy walked down the aisle of the Milltown Baptist Church in 1928 to give his heart to Jesus, he made a promise to tithe ten percent of every paycheck to the Lord. His job as pipefitter at the Lehigh Valley Railroad paid only minimum wages which wasn't much to raise his five kids on, so he wrote the promise in his Bible which, to him, was the same as pounding it in concrete.

The Great Depression of the 1930s hit the village of Milltown hard, which is to say people lost their jobs left and right. Daddy was laid off three times so Mother learned how to add not just a cup of water to make the soup go further but how to add a quart of water to the mix! We ate enough tomato dumplings and potato soup to sink the Lusitania but at least we didn't starve.

The day came when there was no money to pay for anything, let alone tithe, so Daddy made a second promise with God; he would give God half of everything in Daddy's garden as soon as the vegetables were ripe enough to pick. He didn't write that promise in his Bible but he meant it just the same.

So, Daddy took a roll of twine and made a line straight through the middle of his garden. Everything on the right half would go to the pastor as tithe and whatever was on the left would feed our family.

Every evening after work, Daddy rushed to his garden. We younger ones weren't allowed to weed, lest we pull up a carrot or radish by mistake, so we watered instead. Truth be told, we spent much more time watering God's side than Daddy's.

The neighbors watched Daddy tend his garden and teased him about his tithe promise. But Daddy laughed it off and kept right on hoeing.

But one afternoon, as Daddy inspected his garden, his heart sank. The family's side of the garden was starting to look puny. He hurried over to the Lord's side but thankfully, it was growing like a picture in Farmer's Almanac. Back and forth he ran to compare them but there was no mistaking; our family's side of the garden was wilting and looking pathetic.

He watered and hoed and prayed but it was like his side had just given up the ghost.

Thalbert Miller, our next door neighbor, insisted that Daddy forget his tithe promise to the Lord. Daddy had a family to feed, Albert reasoned, and God would surely understand. But Daddy wouldn't break his promises, nosiree, and he kept right on working.

When the carrots, cucumbers and squash began ripening in the church's garden, Daddy walked the two miles to the parsonage every few days and presented them proudly to the pastor's wife as tithe. Mother was still using last year's canned vegetables, stored in our cool, dirt-floored cellar, so we weren't starving. At least, not yet.

But as the summer progressed, our family's side of the garden lay dead and dormant.

After Mother had used the last jar of canned green beans and succotash, Daddy assured us at the supper table that God would not let us go hungry. Daddy had kept his promise to tithe and God would provide, though when pressed for "how," Daddy didn't have a clue.

The next morning when Daddy opened the front door to go to work, he let out a howl and yelled, "Praise the Lord! I knew it! I knew God would somehow provide."

During the night, our neighbors and friends had silently piled boxes and bags of fresh vegetables from their gardens onto our front porch, way more than our entire garden had ever produced.

That evening, to celebrate, all the neighbors set up tables in our back yard and brought over enough casseroles, plates of fresh vegetables, meatloaf and desserts to feed an Army batallion. Never had I seen such a spread! Daddy prayed God's blessing over everyone who had contributed to our "Feast of Tithing," then he led the large group in singing the old Methodist hymn:

Come and dine,” the Master calleth, “Come and dine”;
You may feast at Jesus’ table all the time;
He Who fed the multitude, turned the water into wine,
To the hungry calleth now, "Come and dine."

Do This Today!

Do You Always Keep a Copy of Your Articles?
We STRONGLY recommend you do this today and occasionally in the future as you add more articles

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it.  You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site.

We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of there safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website.

Click Here to Download a Copy of Your Articles in Mass

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive.
While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

Make sure to do this today to protect your writing. Log in HERE.

Why Don't I Look Like a New Creation in Christ in the Mirror?
by Michael Edwards

Most Christians have heard how important it is to understand who they are in Christ, their identity in Christ.

Greatly loved by God - Ephesians 2:4 - Forgiven of all our sins - Ephesians 1:7

Free from the law of sin and death - Romans 8:2 - Righteous - Rom 5:19

Complete - Colossians 2:10 NASB - Justified - 1 Corinthians 6:11

Sanctified - Hebrews 10:10 NASB - Holy and without blame - Ephesians 1:4

Perfected - Hebrews 10:14 NASB

But when we look in the mirror, what we see does not always look like the new creation in Christ we are supposed to be.

Here is the Problem: We see our unredeemed flesh in the mirror and not our perfected Spirit. We are called to see our flesh as crucified and dead and ourselves alive in the Spirit. In other words, when we look at our flesh in the mirror or at other believers in the flesh, we are looking in the wrong place. This visible lack of change in the flesh has caused numerous believers to abandon the faith. We are so attuned to the flesh with ourselves and others. The problem, the mirror is all about sight and has nothing to do with faith. We are called to walk by faith and not by sight.

for we walk by faith, not by sight—2 Cor 5:7 NAS

When we look at our flaws and imperfection that are visible in this world, we are using our sight, walking by sight. Note that all of our verses in this message require us to use our eyes of faith, to believe what the Bible says is true about us, not what we see.

To run this race well, we fix our faith on Jesus and not our eyes on our crucified and dead flesh.

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Heb 12:1-2 NAS

To see ourselves in Christ as described in the Bible takes faith. This means we agree with what God, who lives outside of time, sees already, and tells us is true. What God tells us is true is as good as done, we are simply called to believe. When we do, bondages fall away, and we walk in the power of God.

We are not transformed by looking at our flesh in the mirror, we are transformed into His image by beholding the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, as if we are looking at ourselves in His reflection. We are now the reflection of Christ, not our unredeemed flesh. When we believe and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, we become more like Him.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. 2 Cor 3:18 NAS

When we stop looking at things in the flesh as the world does and renew our minds to this truth, we are transformed.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Rom 12:2 NAS

Not only do we see ourselves in the Spirit as perfected, we are called to see other believers in the same way. Doing so helps us more than it helps them because it sharpens our spiritual eyesight. So instead of seeing things in the flesh one moment and in the Spirit the next, we stay in the Spirit as we are called to do. We are called to no longer regard anyone according to the flesh.

From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 2 Cor 5:16 ESV

Seeing things as God does will foster faith and grace. If we understand that believers are not their flesh, we will show them more grace. We will not judge them or count their sins against them, just like God does with us.

For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. Heb 8:12 KJV

Instead, we will build them up in the faith, just as Jesus did with the Apostles and Paul did with the church. We will do so, even more, when they have fallen deep into sin like the Corinthians. We encourage ourselves and other believers to walk by faith and not by sight, exactly as we are supposed to do. God has made us a promise in John 3:16. Either you believe it is true and God is capable of fulfilling His promise, or you do not. If you are smart, you believe Him and leave the entire burden of this promise on God’s shoulders. The burden of a promise is always on the promise maker.

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16 NAS

The work is finished and the only one that wants you to doubt is the enemy. As Jesus said numerous times, stop doubting your Fathers promise and just believe.

Support FaithWriters Spread of the Gospel

Fishers of Men in Over 230 Countries
Together We Spread the Gospel On the Net

Not all of us can go around the world as missionaries in person, but we can reach the world online. We can even reach many places missionaries cannot go in person. The world needs sites like FaithWriters, prepared Christian authors and as many Christian articles and books that point to Jesus as possible. The web especially needs your Bible studies, apologetic articles, calls to salvation, nonfiction and fiction articles and books leading people to Jesus. Together we attract lost people from all over the world who need Jesus along with believers who need their minds renewed and encouraged. God has given us a great opportunity to reach many people who may have never heard of Jesus. The image above marks the location of our visitors.

Numerous people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. We contact every person who leaves an email address and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two-minute video from Kimberly on how she found God on the internet

A few unedited emails from people who have accepted Jesus on the site.

The shutdown of the site stopped and we received this message through our evangelism page. I am certain is was our hacker.

Another Great Way to Improve The Critique Circle

Fellow Members Need Your Help.

Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.

Tips on Giving Critiques

Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:

Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.

Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).

Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.

Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

We Also Need Your Article to Critique!
Members and paid editors provide the critiques in the circle. You can even submit your judged Challenge entries to the circle.

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

This is a real chance to help others and receive some very constructive and private critiques of your writing.

Increase Sales With an Audio Book
                          or
Make a Nice Income From Home

Recently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done very well with almost 600 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook.

Dave did his narration, and for some, that might work out great. But there is an easier way and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online.

I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and keep any profits myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees.

When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook.

Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator. ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home.

Please let us know if you have signed up for this program.

We Always Respond to Emails

If you do not receive a timely response to an email, we did not receive your email, or you did not receive our reply. We are constantly battling overwhelming amounts of spam and sometimes emails we should receive end up in our spam by accident.

You should check your spam and make sure that writer-support@faithwriters.com, feedback@faithwriters.com, bea@faithwriters.com and michael@faithwriters.com are on your email providers approved list.

If you have tried more than once and did not receive a reply, click on a contact link at the bottom of most FaithWriters pages and send us a message telling us of the issue. We will try and email you from another email provider.

Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?

In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.

If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there.  If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in awhile just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too.
