Not Your Usual Writing Challenge - New Format Again Next Quarter
Awaken Your Creativity - Fiction and Non-Fiction Entries Encouraged

This quarter, we’re focusing on Words of Wisdom, where each week we will focus on a verse from Proverbs that we provide for you. As always, each entry can be in any genre and should follow all of the standard Challenge rules. Each entry needs to clearly show the lesson from each Proverb, but you do not have to actually include the verse in the entry. If you do include the verse in your entry, please be sure to note which translation you used. This is a great experiment for your creativity.

To give you a clearer picture, here is just an example, it will not be used in the quarterly challenge.  Do not wear yourself out to get rich; be wise enough to restrain yourself. (Proverbs 23:4) If this were the actual topic for the week, you would be given just the reference of Proverbs 23:4. You would look it up in your own Bible and use your writing talent to show the Biblical lesson in your entry.

If you have not already, go HERE and sign up for the weekly topic notice on the right-hand side of the page. We will then send you a new topic email each Thursday and you can choose to enter or not.

Here are the first four weeks topics with the verse displayed to give you a better idea. What do you think your 750-word entry have been about based on these verses?

Topic 1 – Begins April 6 / Ends April 13
Proverbs 3:5 - (Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; NIV)
Winners Announced April 20

Topic 2 – Begins April 13/ Ends April 20
Proverbs 31:10 - (A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. NIV)
Winners Announced April 27

Topic 3 – Begins April 20/ Ends April 27
Proverbs 30:5 - (Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. NIV)
Winners Announced May 4

This one is still open:

Topic 4 – Begins April 27/ Ends May 4
Proverbs 27:17 (As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. NIV)
Winners Announced May 11

There is one active topic right now with a few more days to enter and then five after that in this quarter. This should be really challenging and hopefully a lot of fun! We truly hope our long-time members who love the Challenge and new members will all join us.

And don't forget, this is the final quarter for an entry to be considered for the 2022 Best of the Best Awards and cash prizes.

Freelancing/Publishing Tips - Writing and Publishing Resumes
Jenny Ann Fulton

Writing Resumes and Publishing Resumes are helpful tools to have on hand if you are hoping to pick up freelance work and/or pursue traditional publishing.

A Writing Resume is geared toward freelancing. This is what you might send a potential client to showcase your work and experience. Clients don’t always ask for one, but I usually offer it as a “for your consideration” attachment. Like other employment resumes, it includes an objective, education, and prior relevant work experience. Since I’m focusing on the work I’ve done for others, I don’t include the books I’ve published.

A Publishing Resume is crafted for literary agents and publishers. While they might not ask for this, they usually want to know some of the information included in it. Having everything already in place makes it easier and faster to respond. Since you’re not applying to be hired (at least not in the standard sense), it doesn’t need an objective, but you should include any books you’ve published. It’s also good to include platform information.

Benefits
- May give you a slight edge over others who haven’t created one
- Can make you look more professional
- Proves you have experience and connections in the industry
- Allows potential clients to get a sense of your writing voice and style
- Shows literary agents and publishers that you’re committed to this craft, are working hard to develop your platform, and are worth investing in

What to Include
I’ve included screenshots of a writing resume template and samples of my writing resume and publishing resume (On the Facebook group page). If you look closely, you’ll see that I didn’t completely follow the template or incorporate all its suggestions. Feel free to do likewise.

Ideas for what to include on Writing and Publishing Resumes:
- Name and Contact Information (address, phone number, email address
- Objective (on Writing Resume)
- Education, including any writing courses you’ve taken
- Writing Experience (such as: website, book publications and platform numbers on the Publishing Resume, sample article publications, freelance work, writing memberships, any writing awards/honors)
- Other Work Experience

What About You?
- Do you have any questions, comments, or suggestions?
- Anything you’d add to this post?
- Let me know if you’d like me to send you a copy of the Writing Resume Template (Word file). I can also create a template based on my personal resumes if anyone is interested.

Join our private Facebook group to see the included templates, fellowship with other members, be encouraged and improve your writing skill. Go HERE.

(Level 4 – Masters - 3-23 Quarterly Winner)
Topic: SOUL / SOLE (03/02/23)
TITLE: The Only One | Previous Challenge Entry
By Jack Taylor

The breeze slithered through the palm branches with the shifting shape change of a snake. You could hear the hissing sigh and the scaley passing of the invisible intruder. Innocent kept his candles lit to sense the breathy traveler. Oh, he knew that restless spirit well.

“Go away, soul snatcher,” he whispered.

His great-grandfather had told him about the silent observer when he could hardly toddle on the soles of his feet. The long line of shoemakers had worked with leather, shaping it just right for the wearer. Of course, the smell around the home wasn’t always great as hides were treated and tanned. Sometimes, the village kids would mock him, holding their noses and telling him to take his stink away.

And so, he became the only one, the sole soul, on many a summer’s day, wandering the woods and listening for the sound of the quiet snatcher, for that is what his great-grandfather had warned him about. The snatcher stole the souls of those who were idle, caring only for their own hearts, focusing on their own dreams and desires. A great emptiness would consume them and they would wander aimlessly, accomplishing nothing.

“This soul is full,” he said loudly. “No room for anything more.”

His grandfather had introduced the family to the vegetable extracts that made their quality shoes waterproof. He knew nothing about how bacterial decay in damp environments by the riverside could make their products deteriorate but he knew that with his grandfather’s invention, the whole village began to stop by. When the headman stood proudly in a pair of his grandfather’s sandals their family fortune was set. Even the bullies stopped their extra hits and kicks as he passed.

When his father took over the business everything changed. An army captain stopped by for shoes and shared a drink of some kind. His father seemed to lap up the new liquid like a thirsty dog. The products produced came back from customers with complaints. The family fortune became less. His father’s voice grew harsh and his arm swung harder than any bully.

“Stay away from me, you empty snake,” he yelled.

And so, in his teens, Innocent had wandered the forest again. The sole soul. Nothing made sense. Hard work had been done but the sinister serpent had slithered into the soul of his father and stolen all the goodness they needed to survive. His mother cried more often than he could count. His sister disappeared without a word. His mother cried more.

In the woods, Innocent began to tan his own hides and fashion the Latin soleae which he knew his friends loved to wear. Slaves were not allowed to wear shoes of any form but he saw the sores on their feet and longed to help.

It was a young girl he helped first when he saw the welts and scabs on her foot. She was whimpering and holding her foot. A thorn had pierced her sole. He knelt, gently extracted it, and then wrapped her foot in the leather he’d worked to suppleness and coated with wool.

The little one stared in wonder at the covering and he could feel her wiggle her toes inside. A giggle replaced the whimper and he felt like a king. Another girl, seeing the joy on her friend’s face sat beside her and held out her feet, both of them.

“You aren’t hurting,” he said.

“I am on the inside,” she answered.

“But I can’t make a shoe for your heart,” he said.

“If you make some for my feet then my heart will feel it,” she said.

Who could argue with that logic? And that was when the line began at his hovel in the forest. Never before had the children of slaves worn shoes but the sole soul healer changed all that.

What the children got the adults wanted but some were too afraid to ask. The townsfolk plagued Innocent’s father with complaints about the work of the son and the father responded by spending more time in the bar. The townsfolk objected for a while until they saw their workers produce more and sing more.

One day the mayor stopped by the hovel in the forest. “You the sole man?” he asked.

“No one else by that name, here, Sir,” he answered.

“I hear good soles heal heavy hearts.”

“One pair coming up,” Innocent said. “Now tell me why your heart is so heavy.”

Sweetness for the Soul - Jennifer Woodley

“My child, eat honey, for it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste.” Proverbs 24:13 (NRSV)

On the surface, this passage appears to be about the pleasure of eating honey, and it is, but the meaning extends far deeper. Wisdom is sweetness to our soul as honey is to our taste buds. If we find wisdom, we find delight, but even more, we find a pleasurable future path in which to walk.

Wisdom must satiate every area of our life. Proverbs exhorts us to invite wisdom into our home life, and work life; it must be our guide when dealing with our enemies and our friends; those we meet in passing; those who are wealthy and those who are poor. All our every day walking around decisions are to be led by wisdom.

But how do we begin pursuing wisdom? Wisdom begins with fearing God, trusting Him and obeying His Word. Wisdom then unfolds in our life as we adopt wholesome Christ-centred believing, thinking and living. Wisdom is a call to walk continuously in righteousness.

A thorough reading of Proverbs will leave us with little doubt that wisdom is worth pursuing diligently. Wisdom calls us to trust in God (Proverbs 3:5-6), give attention to parental wisdom (Proverbs 10:1), practice fidelity in marriage (Proverbs 6:32), be honest (Proverbs 10:10), live simply (Proverbs 28:6) and be temperate (Proverbs 15:1) to name but a few.

Wisdom equips us to say and do the right thing at the right time and in the right way. Let's seek to apply our heart to the ways of wisdom and in each situation ask, 'What does wisdom do here?'

Do Not Wait. Build Treasure in Heaven as Jesus Instructed.

Four Opportunities (From Home) to Be Bold and Courageous for Christ!
1) Share the Gospel from Your Home - with People Actively Seeking Jesus
2) Pray Together Weekly with Thousands Over Important Topics
3) Write and Post Articles Offering Jesus to The Lost and Encouraging the Saints

1) Have you ever wanted to do more for God, but did not know how to get started or what to do? What if you could share the gospel from home (on the phone or by text) with people who contact you directly and are actively seeking Jesus. (Calls and texts are funneled through a secure platform to your phone. Callers do not get your phone number.) Would you be interested in offering these seekers eternal life and building treasure in heaven for yourself? If you would, watch the video HERE to see what one woman in this program has done from home to lead the lost to Christ. Then go HERE and scroll down to learn more and volunteer.

You can volunteer for as little as one hour per week or more if you like. Free training is provided These calls are from people who are actively seeking Jesus and eternal life. I encourage you to volunteer for this program. I have taken these calls before and just signed up to take them again. You will be blessed.

2) Join Intercessors for America and Pray together with thousands for important topics in the United States and around the world. They have live prayer calls several times a week and groups for the world, the United States and for each state. If you have been called to pray, this is a great organization to join and make a real difference in the spiritual battle. They also partner with Voter Voice in the United States and make it extremely easy to let your local politicians know your approval of or opposition towards pending legislation. They do all the work for you, and you just click a few buttons. Go HERE to learn more and sign up.

3) Write and post articles designed to lead the lost to Christ and to encourage the body of Christ in the faith. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit what to write. Then ask Him to anoint and bless your articles so they get to the right people. Then trust that your prayer has been answered and write and post another one. You never know what the Holy Spirit can do with articles that are in line with God's will. Someday in Heaven, you may be meeting some of those people who came to Christ because of your article.

4) Give Life! Send this book as a free e-book or $3.66 as a print copy to non-believers or those struggling in the faith.
Used on several college campuses, in over 1,300 prisons and by many individuals and churches across the country. Compact book full of the objective evidence for God's existence and for Jesus claims. Hundreds of reviews online and in emails we have received leading people to Christ and renewing the faith of others. You can send the e-book for free to anyone or you can send the print version for $3.66 including shipping if you are an Amazon prime member. Send it to family and friends. Send to inmates directly from Amazon so it will be accepted at the jail. Plant seeds and offer eternal life. God will reward you if they come or not, He is always looking to see if we obey and walk in faith. Don't wait any longer, build treasure in Heaven where it will be waiting for you as Jesus stated. He also said, "Where your treasure is so will your heart be."

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt 6:20 - 21 NIV

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. Luke 12:33 NIV

You can do this for Jesus!

Please bless us by letting us know if you have gotten involved in any of the four options.
Increase Sales With an Audio Book
                          or
Make a Nice Income From Home

Recently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done extremely well with almost 2,700 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook.

Dave did his own narration, and for some, that works great. But there is an easier way, and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online.

I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and get to keep any profits for myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees.

When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook.

Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator.
ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home.

Please let us know if you have signed up for this program.

Support FaithWriters Spread of the Gospel

Fishers of Men in Over 230 Countries
Together We Spread the Gospel On the Net

Not all of us can go around the world as missionaries in person, but we can reach the world online. We can even reach many places missionaries cannot go in person. The world needs sites like FaithWriters, prepared Christian authors and as many Christian articles and books that point to Jesus as possible. The web especially needs your Bible studies, apologetic articles, calls to salvation, nonfiction and fiction articles and books leading people to Jesus. Together we attract lost people from all over the world who need Jesus along with believers who need their minds renewed and encouraged. God has given us a great opportunity to reach many people who may have never heard of Jesus. The image above marks the location of our visitors.

Numerous people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. We contact every person who leaves an email address and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two-minute video from Kimberly on how she found God on the internet

A few unedited emails from people who have accepted Jesus on the site.

1) This first one was from a person who hacked FaithWriters a few years ago. We feared the entire site might be lost. We prayed for our hackers and posted articles letting them know that their salvation was more important than the website. The shutdown of the site stopped and we received this message through our evangelism page. I am certain is was our hacker.

Do This Today!

Do You Always Keep a Copy of Your Articles?
We STRONGLY recommend you do this today and occasionally in the future as you add more articles

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it.  You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site. If you post regularly, go back and do this once a month or so to capture your newest submissions.

We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of there permanent safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. We have had attacks and issues in the past. Thankfully, we do not keep any of your financial information.

If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website.

Click Here to Download a Copy of Your Articles in Mass

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive.
While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

KEEP COPIES OF YOUR ARTICLES!!! Make sure to do this today to protect your writing. Log in HERE.

We can learn and improve our own writing by reading the winners.
While you are there, sow some good seed by leaving a comment.

Be Anxious for Nothing
by Michael Edwards

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Phil 4:6-7 NAS

In the world today, it is easy to fall into anxiety. We do not even need a pressing issue in our own lives for this to happen. But add in personal difficulties and a wrong focus on our part, and we are guaranteed to struggle.

As followers of Christ, we have God's word, the truth to rely upon. We do not need to be anxious, no matter what is going on in our lives. This may sound easier said than done, but all things are possible with God. His peace that surpasses all understanding is guaranteed, provided we follow through as He instructs.

Instead of worrying ourselves into anxiety, we take our concerns to our loving Father in prayer, petition and thanksgiving. Then we leave them there. If they come back, we go again and again until our heart is no longer troubled or afraid.

Next, we change our focus to higher and loftier things. We have a lot to be thankful for and much better things to focus on than our temporary worries and fears. In Christ, we have overcome the world by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. We are greatly loved children of God, ambassadors of the King of kings and citizens of heaven, promised a future beyond our imagination.

If we do things God's way and keep our focus on higher and loftier things, we will experience His peace that overcomes all circumstances. If we do things the way we always have, allowing our hearts to be troubled and afraid, we won't. The choice is ours.

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. John 14:27 NAS

And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.” Luke 22:20

Another Great Way to Improve The Critique Circle

Fellow Members Need Your Help.

Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.

Tips on Giving Critiques

Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:

Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.

Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).

Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.

Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

We Also Need Your Article to Critique!
Members and paid editors provide the critiques in the circle. You can even submit your judged Challenge entries to the circle.

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

This is a real chance to help others and receive some very constructive and private critiques of your writing.

We Always Respond to Emails

If you do not receive a timely response to an email, we did not receive your email, or you did not receive our reply. We are constantly battling overwhelming amounts of spam and sometimes emails we should receive end up in our spam by accident.

You should check your spam and make sure that writer-support@faithwriters.com, feedback@faithwriters.com, bea@faithwriters.com and michael@faithwriters.com are on your email providers approved list.

If you have tried more than once and did not receive a reply, click on a contact link at the bottom of most FaithWriters pages and send us a message telling us of the issue. We will try and email you from another email provider.

Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?

In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.

If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there.  If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in awhile just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too.
