Better Than We Know Ourselves Jennifer Woodley

Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Very truly, I tell you, before the cock crows, you will have denied me three times.” John 13:38 (NRSV)

Often what we think is true about ourselves is in fact far from reality. Peter was the enthusiastic disciple who believed himself so devoted and faithful in service to His master that he would lay down his life for Jesus. Yet Christ saw beneath Peter’s apparently convincing confession to the truth of who he really was. He was a man who when put to the test, would not be prove to be committed to Christ, but would instead deny him.

The truth of who we are can be very confronting and hurt us enormously. Peter would have been confused and crushed by what Jesus said to him. How could his friend speak such cruel, confronting words? Did he really know who Peter, the devoted disciple was? Like Peter are we too blind to the dark shadows lurking in our hearts? Do we really know ourselves? Perhaps not, but Christ does. He sees straight through our confessions to the intent of our hearts.

Jesus knows us best of all. And despite all, he still loves us deeply and generously.

Let us bring all of ourselves to the Savior. Allow him to speak to us about the shadow parts of who we are. And as Peter did later in the Gospel, let us seek his forgiveness and begin again with a heart set on loving Jesus.

TITLE: The Composition
Previous Challenge Entry (Level 4 – Masters)
Topic: Beginning and End
By Rachel Burkum

The symphony starts...a slow, quiet tempo. Darkness envelops the scene - a hushed void. The bass notes rise. An eerie mist begins to form. The instruments create a steady almost-hypnotic beat.

Suddenly, the orchestra comes alive as a beam of light shatters the darkness. The notes thunder through the air, making those who listen tremble. The pounding of the timpani reverberates from east to west, announcing the arrival of a spinning sphere - the handiwork of God.

Stars, moons, planets and galaxies...they gather to hear the music play. The grass of the field waves to the beat, and the trees bow to their Maker. Birds and fish, cattle and insects - all hear the song as the gentle breeze blows. It is the whisper of the Lord.

The stringed instruments begin to raise the tension of the song as new beings are introduced. They are the most precious creations, made in the likeness of God Himself. A flute solo sings a sweet tune. It is the love and bond between Creator and creation.

A page is turned, and the symphony quiets. All seems well. But darkness rises behind the scene, ready to strike at the precisely-timed moment. The cymbals clash, the drums roar and the earth shakes to its core. Something is wrong. There is chaos across the stage. Notes fly in every direction, hurled with force through the woodwinds and harps.

And then...it is still. A sad oboe tells of the separation - the nightfall without a hope of sunrise. Slowly, chords rise again, the instruments bringing back order to the notes. It is a steady tune, but bland and empty. Something is missing. Restoration is incomplete.

Oh, but then the sounds, the beautiful sounds! A joyous French horn rings out clear. It is the announcement of the One who can bring harmony - the One sent by his Father to produce order once again.

The instruments rejoice. They blend together in sweet and festive song, the voices from Heaven joining the melody of ultimate love.

But the darkness lurks again. The minor notes hide behind the volume, infiltrating the scene. When least expected, they spring forth through the screeching violins. A chilled wind blows across the stage. The drums beat an angry tempo, driving fear and pain into the souls of the audience. The only remnant of the Son so loved is the shadow of an empty cross.

Grief-stricken, the melody suffers, forced and pulled into the open against the will of the strings. Tears mingle with the foreboding sounds. Hope seems out of reach and the world is dark once again.

But for those who wait, the gong strikes three. The darkness shrieks with a clamor of sour notes, chased offstage by the horns and bells. He has risen! He is alive! No shadow can remain. Prophecy fulfilled, the instruments play on. It is time. Time to live with a new law in place. Time to look to the golden horizon for soon...soon will be the glorious end.

The clock ticks relentlessly as the stage grows tired. The notes march on, weariness hanging on each measure - each turn of the page. The bells grow dim, the piano flat and hollow. But they must play...they must be heard...they must resist the unleashed darkness that swallows the weak, one by one.

And then...a glimmer, far in the distance. A hush falls over the orchestra as anticipation rises. Is it time? Yes! There He is! The trumpets break forth with vigor set free. All of the brass and strings breathe new life as the crescendo builds and builds until the heavens and earth shake. Singing blends with the instruments and tears of joy rain down.

From the void of darkness to the eternal light, the final measures play. Yet when the end of the song is reached, the Conductor turns one more page. Another composition beyond all imagination awaits.

Do You Always Keep a Copy of Your Articles?
We STRONGLY recommend you do this today and occasionally in the future as you add more articles

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it.  You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site.

We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of there safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website.

Click Here to Download a Copy of Your Articles in Mass

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive.
While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

Make sure to do this today to protect your writing. Log in HERE.

How to Stop Fear and Worry
by Michael Edwards

While most Christians would acknowledge that worry and fear are sins, I do not think that many live their lives as though they are sins. Many of us live our lives accepting worry and fear as a part of our makeup. We may even feel like we are being irresponsible if we are not worried about our families, finances, health, and so on. But the truth is, that God continually tells us we do not need to worry or fear. So at the core, these sins like most, are sins of unbelief.

We all have experienced temptation before we fall into sin. We know it when we feel it. Temptation must come before any act of sin can manifest in our lives. But have you ever considered that temptation must come before the sins of worry and fear? Satan interjects a "what if" thought and we let it take hold, completely forgetting God's continual good advice against it.

Recently God helped me to realize that satan's temptation toward worry and fear are the most prevalent temptations to sin in my life. Satan constantly tempts me with thoughts that can lead to the sins of fear and worry. Fear and worry can then lead to outward acts of sin. Things like anger, depression, lashing out at others, addiction and so on.

Understanding fear and worry are sins, and that temptation must come first are the keys to defeating these sins. The next time you are living life and a fearful thought comes to mind, realize it is a temptation from satan to lead you into the sins of worry and fear. The point of temptation is the easiest and the only place to defeat sin. Once we go beyond temptation, we are already into sin, leading to feelings of guilt, condemnation, and more sin.

We must begin to recognize the temptation towards fear and worry when it comes and say "NO" to the temptation.

I trust God, and I will no longer give into this worthless temptation.

Once you refuse to let your heart be troubled or afraid, God's peace that surpasses all understanding will come quite quickly and be yours in abundance. The incredible freedom that comes from rejecting the temptation towards fear and worry will lead you to reject the temptation consistently.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27

Make a daily commitment not to let your heart be troubled or afraid. As soon as you feel the temptation for your heart to be troubled, say, "heart do not be troubled or afraid." Doing this consistently will let you walk in God's incredible peace that surpasses all understanding.

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well. John 14:1

I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!" John 16:33

Again Jesus said to them, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so also I am sending you." John 20:21

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:7

Fishers of Men in Over 230 Countries
Together We Spread the Gospel On the Net

Not all of us can go around the world as missionaries in person, but we can reach the world online. We can even reach many places missionaries cannot go in person. The world needs sites like FaithWriters, prepared Christian authors and as many Christian articles and books that point to Jesus as possible. The web especially needs your Bible studies, apologetic articles, calls to salvation, nonfiction and fiction articles and books leading people to Jesus. Together we attract lost people from all over the world who need Jesus along with believers who need their minds renewed and encouraged. God has given us a great opportunity to reach many people who may have never heard of Jesus. The image above marks the location of our visitors.

Numerous people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. We contact every person who leaves an email address and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two-minute video from Kimberly on how she found God on the internet

The shutdown of the site stopped and we received this message through our evangelism page. I am certain is was our hacker.

Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?

In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.

If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there.  If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in awhile just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too.

Another Great Way to Improve The Critique Circle

Fellow Members Need Your Help.

Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.

Tips on Giving Critiques

Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:

Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.

Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).

Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.

Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

We Also Need Your Article to Critique!
Members and paid editors provide the critiques in the circle. You can even submit your judged Challenge entries to the circle.

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

This is a real chance to help others and receive some very constructive and private critiques of your writing.

Increase Sales With an Audio Book
                          or
Make a Nice Income From Home

Recently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done very well with almost 600 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook.

Dave did his narration, and for some, that might work out great. But there is an easier way and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online.

I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and keep any profits myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees.

When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook.

Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator. ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home.

Testimony
James Rondinone
Your Price: $2.99
This book is written for Christians struggling in not knowing how to deal with their sexual inclinations or involvements, along with the perception that their fellow believers are not fully accepting them and their sexual orientation.
This book will also help us understand what it means to be accepted, equal, or one in the body of Christ.
Furthermore, it will clarify who we are in Christ, what God’s plan is for our lives, and what kind of sexual relationships the Word of God condones?
And ultimately, it will teach us how to be no longer subject to the cravings and desires of our sexual weaknesses but rather how to operate in God’s love.

Healing deep emotional wounds with the love of God.
Marius Kotze
Beloved, let us not be conscious of the devil and his works, but of Jesus, our Commander-in-chief! In the presence of Jesus Christ, everything changes.
Jesus said on the cross, “Father forgive them as they don’t know what they are doing.” The people that crucified Jesus was under the control of the worldly spirits as they were influenced by dark forces.
The cross is the unique symbol of the Christian faith. It is the distinct logo that belongs to Jesus alone. No founder or leader of another religion would dare boast this logo. For it stands for something they have never done!
None of them has been crucified for the sins of the world. None of them has been raised from the dead. None of them can give us the help we so desperately need. Only Jesus can save you. As he said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except by me.” Open your heart for Jesus now. Call on His name. He will save you.
