Previous Challenge Entry (Level 4 – Masters)
Topic: Beginning and End (04/16/09)
TITLE: The Composition | Previous Challenge Entry
By Rachel Burkum

The symphony starts...a slow, quiet tempo. Darkness envelops the scene - a hushed void. The bass notes rise. An eerie mist begins to form. The instruments create a steady almost-hypnotic beat.

Suddenly, the orchestra comes alive as a beam of light shatters the darkness. The notes thunder through the air, making those who listen tremble. The pounding of the timpani reverberates from east to west, announcing the arrival of a spinning sphere - the handiwork of God.

Stars, moons, planets and galaxies...they gather to hear the music play. The grass of the field waves to the beat, and the trees bow to their Maker. Birds and fish, cattle and insects - all hear the song as the gentle breeze blows. It is the whisper of the Lord.

The stringed instruments begin to raise the tension of the song as new beings are introduced. They are the most precious creations, made in the likeness of God Himself. A flute solo sings a sweet tune. It is the love and bond between Creator and creation.

A page is turned, and the symphony quiets. All seems well. But darkness rises behind the scene, ready to strike at the precisely-timed moment. The cymbals clash, the drums roar and the earth shakes to its core. Something is wrong. There is chaos across the stage. Notes fly in every direction, hurled with force through the woodwinds and harps.

And then...it is still. A sad oboe tells of the separation - the nightfall without a hope of sunrise. Slowly, chords rise again, the instruments bringing back order to the notes. It is a steady tune, but bland and empty. Something is missing. Restoration is incomplete.

Oh, but then the sounds, the beautiful sounds! A joyous French horn rings out clear. It is the announcement of the One who can bring harmony - the One sent by his Father to produce order once again.

The instruments rejoice. They blend together in sweet and festive song, the voices from Heaven joining the melody of ultimate love.

But the darkness lurks again. The minor notes hide behind the volume, infiltrating the scene. When least expected, they spring forth through the screeching violins. A chilled wind blows across the stage. The drums beat an angry tempo, driving fear and pain into the souls of the audience. The only remnant of the Son so loved is the shadow of an empty cross.

Grief-stricken, the melody suffers, forced and pulled into the open against the will of the strings. Tears mingle with the foreboding sounds. Hope seems out of reach and the world is dark once again.

But for those who wait, the gong strikes three. The darkness shrieks with a clamor of sour notes, chased offstage by the horns and bells. He has risen! He is alive! No shadow can remain. Prophecy fulfilled, the instruments play on. It is time. Time to live with a new law in place. Time to look to the golden horizon for soon...soon will be the glorious end.

The clock ticks relentlessly as the stage grows tired. The notes march on, weariness hanging on each measure - each turn of the page. The bells grow dim, the piano flat and hollow. But they must play...they must be heard...they must resist the unleashed darkness that swallows the weak, one by one.

And then...a glimmer, far in the distance. A hush falls over the orchestra as anticipation rises. Is it time? Yes! There He is! The trumpets break forth with vigor set free. All of the brass and strings breathe new life as the crescendo builds and builds until the heavens and earth shake. Singing blends with the instruments and tears of joy rain down.

From the void of darkness to the eternal light, the final measures play. Yet when the end of the song is reached, the Conductor turns one more page. Another composition beyond all imagination awaits.

Do This Today!

Do You Always Keep a Copy of Your Articles?
We STRONGLY recommend you do this today and occasionally in the future as you add more articles

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it.  You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site.

We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of there safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website.

Click Here to Download a Copy of Your Articles in Mass

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive.
While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

Make sure to do this today to protect your writing. Log in HERE.

Misplaced Love - Jennifer Woodley

‘Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world.’ 1 John 2:15 (NIV)

It would be true to say that the love of the world rules too much in the lives of many Christians. John warned Christ followers to beware of ‘the lust of the flesh’ (pleasure in eating, drinking, ease and comfort), ‘the lust of the eyes’ (delight in all that the world offers of beauty and possessions) and ‘the pride of life’ (self-exultation and boasting of what humans have accomplished in their wisdom and power). The more we pursue a worldly life, the less the Heavenly life dwells within us because the ‘lusts’ that John speaks of rob our hearts of its desire for self-denial and willingness to abide with Christ. Many have shipwrecked their faith by misplacing their love.

Do we experience rejection, misunderstanding or ridicule by others who are not Christians? Do we feel a sense of disconnection and behave differently from those who don’t know Christ? Or do our words, behaviour and attitudes look just like the surrounding culture? Where have we placed our affections, in the world or with Christ and all He stands for?

Men and women of God, we are called out to be separate and not conform! United with Christ in His death and resurrection, we belong to another world. And we must demonstrate that we are citizens of a Heavenly Kingdom, far more glorious and lasting than this earthly one. We are sojourners simply passing through. Let’s ensure that the lusts of the world do not weigh us down, distract our attention or misplace our love.

Are You Building Treasure in Heaven?
Michael Edwards

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; Matthew 6:20 NAS

Think of God for a moment as your financial advisor. Before deciding on where to invest, He would ask you to consider where you will be spending your eternity, in this world, in heaven, or on a renewed earth. Then he would lay the investment options before your eyes. Investing in this world can bring you financial rewards, but there is no guarantee of a good return or that you won't lose everything. And, when you die, you cannot take any worldly riches with you. On the other hand, He suggests, you can invest in eternal things that cannot lose and are guaranteed to build incredible treasure in heaven that will be waiting for you when you arrive.

As a matter of fact, He commands us to do good, to be a light for the lost and also specifically so that we will have treasure layed up for ourselves for the coming age.

Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 1 Tim 6:18-19 NIV

But it is your choice.

So, you make your decision to start consciously investing in eternal things. Now, based on your choice, God presents you guaranteed investment opportunities on a daily basis.

Someone needs help, prayer, time, and love.

There has been a natural disaster, and funds are needed to help.

A friend needs encouragement in the faith.

A lost friend needs to hear the gospel and see the love of Christ.

A friend or neighbor needs financial help.

Countless additional opportunities to be a bright light on a hill that leads people to Christ.

"And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward." Matt 10:42 NAS

What an amazing Father, not only does He allow, tell us, and encourage us to build treasure in heaven. He lays guaranteed investment opportunities before our eyes every day. Plus the more we give, the more He opens the windows of heaven for us, blessing us more so we can give more and build even more treasure in heaven.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows. Mal 3:10 NAS

God even tells us when to act. It may be a still small voice or a knowing. Or, like we often see with Jesus, compassion and love for a person is one of the strongest indicators that the Holy Spirit is actively present and wants to use us in a situation. If we feel strong compassion, we are being presented with a great opportunity to obey God and build treasure in heaven. God is calling us to place our love into action right away. God never uses guilt to motivate us to give or help. Guilt is our flesh and the enemy talking to us and not the Spirit. So we never act out of guilt. There is no guilt or condemnation in Christ, no matter what investment options I accept or reject. It is up to me how much treasure I want to have waiting for me.

I do what I do, with joy, because my eyes have been opened and I understand these opportunities are all gifts from my Father to build treasure in heaven. It really makes sense that He steers us to build treasure in heaven, where we can enjoy it for eternity.

I also now understand a very important aspect of building treasure in heaven. God wants our hearts focused on eternal, higher and loftier things. He wants our hearts, us, in heaven with Him. He tells us that building treasure in heaven is how this happens.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt 6:21 NAS

For many years, I looked at many of the opportunities God has given me in the wrong way. First off, even though Jesus tells us to do so, I never looked at things from the viewpoint of building treasure in heaven. I thought that this would be selfish. Often, I have looked at many of these opportunities more as annoyances than the gift they are from God. Spurred on by the enemies whispers...

Support FaithWriters Spread of the Gospel

Fishers of Men in Over 230 Countries
Together We Spread the Gospel On the Net

Not all of us can go around the world as missionaries in person, but we can reach the world online. We can even reach many places missionaries cannot go in person. The world needs sites like FaithWriters, prepared Christian authors and as many Christian articles and books that point to Jesus as possible. The web especially needs your Bible studies, apologetic articles, calls to salvation, nonfiction and fiction articles and books leading people to Jesus. Together we attract lost people from all over the world who need Jesus along with believers who need their minds renewed and encouraged. God has given us a great opportunity to reach many people who may have never heard of Jesus. The image above marks the location of our visitors.

Numerous people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. We contact every person who leaves an email address and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two-minute video from Kimberly on how she found God on the internet

A few unedited emails from people who have accepted Jesus on the site.

1) This first one was from a person who hacked FaithWriters a few years ago. We feared the entire site might be lost. We prayed for our hackers and posted articles letting them know that their salvation was more important than the website. The shutdown of the site stopped and we received this message through our evangelism page. I am certain is was our hacker.

Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?

In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.

If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there.  If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in awhile just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too.

Another Great Way to Improve The Critique Circle

Fellow Members Need Your Help.

Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.

Tips on Giving Critiques

Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:

Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.

Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).

Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.

Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

We Also Need Your Article to Critique!
Members and paid editors provide the critiques in the circle. You can even submit your judged Challenge entries to the circle.

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

This is a real chance to help others and receive some very constructive and private critiques of your writing.

Increase Sales With an Audio Book
                          or
Make a Nice Income From Home

Recently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done very well with almost 600 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook.

Dave did his narration, and for some, that might work out great. But there is an easier way and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online.

I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and keep any profits myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees.

When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook.

Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator. ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home.
