Not Your Usual Writing Challenge - New Format
Awaken Your Creativity - Fiction and Non-Fiction Entries Encouraged

This quarter, we’re focusing on Words of Wisdom, where each week we will focus on a verse from Proverbs that we provide for you. As always, each entry can be in any genre and should follow all of the standard Challenge rules. Each entry needs to clearly show the lesson from each Proverb, but you do not have to actually include the verse in the entry. If you do include the verse in your entry, please be sure to note which translation you used. This is a great experiment for your creativity.

To give you a clearer picture, here is just an example, it will not be used in the quarterly challenge.  Do not wear yourself out to get rich; be wise enough to restrain yourself. (Proverbs 23:4) If this were the actual topic for the week, you would be given just the reference of Proverbs 23:4. You would look it up in your own Bible and use your writing talent to show the Biblical lesson in your entry.

If you have not already, go HERE and sign up for the weekly topic notice on the right-hand side of the page. We will then send you a new topic email each Thursday and you can choose to enter or not.

Here is the topic that starts June 1st:

Topic 8 – Begins June 1 / Ends June 8
Proverbs 1:8 (
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. NIV)

9 Types of Blog Posts

One of the most challenging aspects of having a blog can be figuring out what to write every time, whether you’re posting daily, weekly, monthly, etc. For most of us, ideas/inspiration aren’t always immediately at our beck and call.

If you’re stumped for ideas or just looking to switch things up on your blog, here is a starter list to help your mind kick into gear.

1. Content articles. This is especially good if you want to develop a clear brand of who you are and what kind of material you write. If you want to know what’s popular/trending in a content area, you can search YouTube videos, relevant hashtags on Twitter, or look for popular and related topics on Google Trends.

2. How-To articles

3. Opinion articles about current issues or events

4. Life stories/anecdotes with a teaching point or based on a holiday or special occasion

5. Devotionals based on what God is teaching you now, has taught you in the past, questions you have now, or a passage, chapter, or book of the Bible

6. Faithwriters Challenge stories/articles. You spent the time writing it, why not share it on your blog?

7. Guest Posts. Invite other writers to share content on your blog.

8. Book Reviews (by you or others)

9. Author Interviews

TITLE: Homeless | Previous Challenge Entry
By Ronnie Puckett
03/08/23

He was hunched up on an old blanket outside a furniture store. As if in mockery, a display of plush sofas showed through the big window behind him. Poor man, when did he last sit in a comfy chair?
Dropping some coins in his tin, I went off to do my shopping, and thought no more about him.

I came across him again in the park one sunny weekend. This time he was sprawled on a bench, long legs stretched out. His jeans were the scruffiest I’d ever seen, one sole of his grubby trainers had a hole in it, and the cuffs of his old parka were badly frayed. Straggly hair and an unkempt beard completed his sad appearance.

I murmured “Hi!” as I walked by. To my surprise he returned the greeting.

Should I stop to chat, I wondered? Plenty of people were about, dog walkers, families with kids, so it was probably safe enough.
Anyway, my motherly instinct got the better of me. “Had anything to eat today?”

“Yeah. Had some nosh down the Sally,” he replied in flat tones.

“Sally?”

“Salvation Army. They does free meals weekends for us down-and-outs. Trouble is, they tries to save yer soul as well.”

Seizing the opportunity I said, “Nothing wrong with that. Maybe your soul needs saving.”

His eyes narrowed with suspicion. “Stone the crows! Don’t you start.”

“Too late,” I smiled. “I’ve already started. You know, those Salvation Army people do what they do because they care about you. And so does God.”

“Nah!” The man shook his shaggy head. “Why the heck should the Almighty care about me? Done time for GBH and I won’t tell yer what else. Only been out o’ clink three months. Nowhere to go now, so I sleeps rough.”

Astonishingly, tears welled up in his eyes. “Too far gone for God, that’s me.”

Trying to ignore his unpleasant smell, I sat down at the other end of the bench.
“Nobody’s too far gone for God,” I told him gently. “Know what the Bible says? ‘Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ There you are. WHOEVER!”

“Prison chaplain once read that to me,” he muttered.
Head down, he didn’t move or speak for several moments. I silently prayed for him.

Suddenly he jerked back into life. “Must make a move,” he said and stood up. “Goin’ to the Big City.”

“How are you getting there?” I asked.

“Walk. Mebbe hitch a lift – if I’m lucky.”

I thought of that hole in his shoe and the 16 miles to London. “Here, take this.” I took a note from my purse. “This should be enough to cover the train fare.”

“Cor! You sure?” He blinked in amazement. “You’re an angel.”
Stuffing the money in his pocket, he loped off across the park.

Two years later, my husband, Steve, and I visited London for some evangelistic meetings. We joined the queue filing into the big church. When we finally got into the foyer, two ushers welcomed us. To my embarrassment, one of them stared intently at me.

Suddenly, he snapped his fingers. “It’s you! The angel in the park!”

People began to stare, so he beckoned us to one side.

Remember My Chains - Karen Pourbabaee

“The greeting is in my own hand, Paul’s. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.” Colossians 4:18 NAB

Paul wrote this letter to the Colossians while in prison, sharing beautiful descriptions of the preeminence of Christ, warnings about false teachers, and how to live the ideal Christian life in this world. His ending didn’t ask for the prayers of the believers, but held a plea to remember his chains. Why?

Remembrance, in Judaism, includes the notion of awareness and realization, not just of the past but also what it means for the future; be aware and act accordingly is the implication. Memory is not a mere recollection of the past. A true act of remembrance honors the past by using its lessons for present action. That’s what Paul was getting at.

No doubt, Paul would welcome prayers in his imprisonment, but he asks us to remember his chains. It’s his rallying cry to the Church then and now. Paul is asking us to remember why he is in chains—for the cause of Christ and the spread of His kingdom. This valiant soldier isn’t asking for pity, but he’s calling us to remember the cause and the Lord He has suffered for.

Just before this plea, Paul advises, “See that you fulfill the ministry that you received in the Lord.” (Col. 4:17) While “ministry” does refer to formal ministry, it also applies to our daily ministry of spreading the love of Christ in the little things we do for others, in listening and acting upon the whispers of the Father to our hearts. It means studying diligently, living by, and not compromising the Truth. Even if it leads to our own chains of some sort—persecutions, sufferings, etc. And Paul’s last words? Grace be with you. As we remember, it’s our greatest need—our only strength.

Lord, may I remember Paul’s chains and embrace what You have called me to do for You. Amen.

“I’d like to thank you for producing the million-dollar tracts. Because of it, I got saved and I gave my life to Jesus Christ 8 years ago. I used to be an atheist and God brought me to my knees through your million-dollar tract. I went from being an atheist to being on staff at a church, and now I evangelize regularly.” Peter G.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt 6:20 - 21 NIV

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. Luke 12:33 NIV

Increase Sales With an Audio Book
                          or
Make a Nice Income From Home

Recently, I had an email exchange with Dave Walker, a longtime FaithWriters member who grew tremendously in the Writing Challenge. Dave's book, God in the ICU, has done extremely well with almost 2,700 Amazon reviews the last time I looked. He was happily surprised to see a significant increase in sales due to the addition of an audio version. You can view Dave's book and listen to a small audio portion HERE. Dave's book was perfect for an audiobook.

Dave did his own narration, and for some, that works great. But there is an easier way, and it is not that expensive. You can learn about it HERE. ACX is an Amazon company, on their site you can place your book up for narrator auditions. You then get offers from narrators who read a sample for you, posting it on ACX. You choose the one you like and make a deal. This is all done online.

I recently had an audiobook done of Gravity on ACX, by a great narrator and believer named R.F. McCoy. You can hear a sample HERE. If you like R.F. McCoy's voice, make sure to request an audition from him. He was professional, diligent and on schedule. You can find his profile on ACX. It costs nothing to request auditions and you will probably get several. I paid Bob $500.00 and get to keep any profits for myself after Amazon's cut. You can also offer to split profits and pay nothing if a narrator agrees.

When your narration is complete and you have paid the bill, your book is automatically loaded for sale on Audible and other outlets. Everything is professional and that's what you want for your audiobook.

Another thought for some readers is to apply to be a narrator.
ACX will show you how to do this on their site. If you have a good voice, you could make a nice income from home.

Please let us know if you have signed up for this program.

Support FaithWriters Spread of the Gospel

Fishers of Men in Over 230 Countries
Together We Spread the Gospel On the Net

Not all of us can go around the world as missionaries in person, but we can reach the world online. We can even reach many places missionaries cannot go in person. The world needs sites like FaithWriters, prepared Christian authors and as many Christian articles and books that point to Jesus as possible. The web especially needs your Bible studies, apologetic articles, calls to salvation, nonfiction and fiction articles and books leading people to Jesus. Together we attract lost people from all over the world who need Jesus along with believers who need their minds renewed and encouraged. God has given us a great opportunity to reach many people who may have never heard of Jesus. The image above marks the location of our visitors.

Numerous people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. We contact every person who leaves an email address and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country. Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two-minute video from Kimberly on how she found God on the internet

A few unedited emails from people who have accepted Jesus on the site.

1) This first one was from a person who hacked FaithWriters a few years ago. We feared the entire site might be lost. We prayed for our hackers and posted articles letting them know that their salvation was more important than the website. The shutdown of the site stopped and we received this message through our evangelism page. I am certain is was our hacker.

Do This Today!

Do You Always Keep a Copy of Your Articles?
We STRONGLY recommend you do this today and occasionally in the future as you add more articles

We appreciated your patience when FaithWriters was down for over two days a few months ago, due to issues with our service provider. The issue we experienced makes this message of even more importance. We do not want you to lose your articles. Therefore, we have been pushing this for over a year and hope you have already taken advantage of it.  You can download a copy of your articles in mass, with one click on the site. If you post regularly, go back and do this once a month or so to capture your newest submissions.

We back up the site regularly but cannot give you a 100% guarantee of their permanent safety. Things happen online as you know. Hackers are a big issue and some out there would like to take a Christian site down. We have had attacks and issues in the past. Thankfully, we do not keep any of your financial information.

If you log into the site and look in the middle left column of the My Account page under Update and Manage Your Profile/Account, you will see the following link on the website: Click Here to Download a Copy of Your Articles in Mass

When you are logged into the site, click on that link on the website and a copy of your articles will be downloaded to your computer in a zip file. It will be fairly quick depending on your internet speed and number of articles. Save them to your computer or a thumb drive.
While this should download all of your articles, sometimes a couple are missed for some unknown reason. Therefore, double check the downloaded articles by opening each one on your computer. If an important one is missed, you will need to manually copy it to your records from the site. Then going forward, make sure to keep a copy of each new article you post.

KEEP COPIES OF YOUR ARTICLES! Make sure to do this today to protect your writing. Log in HERE.

We can learn and improve our own writing by reading the winners.
While you are there, sow some good seed by leaving a comment.

I Am Righteous, Holy, Sanctified and Perfected
Michael Edwards

As a believer, we should be declaring that we are Righteous, Holy, Sanctified and Perfected in Christ. If you have a hard time doing this, you are looking at yourself and not Jesus.

The Greek word used in the New Testament for holy is the same word used for sanctified. If it says you’re holy, it means you’re sanctified and vice versa too.

Hagiazó - Short Definition: I make holy, sanctify

And by that will, we have been made holy/sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Heb 10:10 NIV

Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified/made holy, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. 1 Cor 6:11 NASB

For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified/holy are all from one [Father]; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren Heb 2:11 NASB

And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build [you] up and to give [you] the inheritance among all those who are sanctified/holy. Acts 20:32 NASB

that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified/made holy by faith in Me.' Acts 26:18b NASB

For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified/holy. Heb 10:14 NASB (Note: While the NASB has it correct, some translations add the word being before sanctified in this He 10:14. The word being (indicating being sanctified) is not in the original text, the translators added it. The original text indicates we have already been sanctified, made holy by Jesus' sacrifice, in this verse and several others.)

Paul even calls the Corinthians who were caught up in sexual sin, sanctified/holy. Like us, I bet that is not what they saw when they looked in the mirror or at the flesh of their brothers and sisters in Christ. He also called them Saints.

To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their [Lord] and ours: 1 Cor 1:2 NASB

Our salvation is not about us. While we should always try to do the next right thing, the flesh will never be perfected, that is why it must die.

This is faith, we no longer regard ourselves or other believers by the flesh. We believe God’s word that we are already a new creation.

From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Cor 5:16-17 ESV

In Christ, I Am Righteous, Holy, Sanctified and Perfected.

Another Great Way to Improve The Critique Circle

Fellow Members Need Your Help.

Providing comments and critiques for fellow members is of great encouragement to them. It is also the perfect way to improve your writing skill.

Tips on Giving Critiques

Critiquing the work of others requires balance. Being too nice will not help your fellow writers develop their work; being too harsh can crush a writer’s ego (particularly new writers, who tend to be shy about sharing their work). How can you achieve the right balance? Here are some tips:

Take care to point out both what works, and what doesn’t. If you’re new to critiquing, a good hint would be to point out one thing you like (a phrase, a description, an idea) for each thing that bothered you.

Whenever possible, be specific when pointing out things that you didn’t like (don’t just say “I didn’t like this part” or “I’d cut that,” say “I didn’t like this part because…” or “I’d cut that because…”).

Try to offer suggestions when you think a change is needed. Suggestions, even to the point of an offered rewording, can be very helpful; even if the suggestion isn’t exactly right for the author to use, he or she may get a good idea from it, or at least a better understanding of the point you are trying to make.

Be honest and direct, but in a polite and caring way. Holding back your feelings about a piece because you’re afraid to share your thoughts isn’t going to help anyone. Just be mindful of how you share your opinions!

We Also Need Your Article to Critique!
Members and paid editors provide the critiques in the circle. You can even submit your judged Challenge entries to the circle.

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

This is a real chance to help others and receive some very constructive and private critiques of your writing.

We Always Respond to Emails

If you do not receive a timely response to an email, we did not receive your email, or you did not receive our reply. We are constantly battling overwhelming amounts of spam and sometimes emails we should receive end up in our spam by accident.

You should check your spam and make sure that writer-support@faithwriters.com, feedback@faithwriters.com, bea@faithwriters.com and michael@faithwriters.com are on your email providers approved list.

If you have tried more than once and did not receive a reply, click on a contact link at the bottom of most FaithWriters pages and send us a message telling us of the issue. We will try and email you from another email provider.

Article Comment Emails Not Getting to Your Gmail?

In the past, some members have had issues receiving notification emails when their Challenge or other articles receive a comment. We just did a test of the system and placed a Gmail test address in my profile. I then posted a comment on one of my articles. I also did this test on a Challenge article for a member who said she was not getting the emails. In both tests, the email notification of the comment did come through to the Gmail address, but in both cases it went to the junk file in Gmail. So, FaithWriters automatic email system is working to Gmail but may be going to your junk.

If you have not been receiving notifications of comments on your articles, post a test comment on one of your own articles and then check the junk tab on your Gmail. Be aware, my junk tab in Gmail showed there were no junk emails until I clicked on it and found the comment notification email from FaithWriters in there.  If you find any emails from FaithWriters in your junk, move them to your inbox and hopefully next time they will not go to junk. Make sure to check your junk on a regular basis and click on the other tabs just to check. Each time move them to your inbox. There is also a tab titled "view all email" that should be checked. Sometimes Gmail divides email up into different tabs, so check all the tabs once in awhile just in case. This is something you should check if you have Hotmail or others too.
